Finkeren Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 (edited) Yesterday, I unlocked the 37mm guns for the IL-2 and tried them out in CAS missions in the campaign. I had never really bothered with the Sh-37 guns before. I tried them out briefly back at the beginning of Early Access, when there was no convergence and I was inexperienced and couldn't hit the broad side of a barn, and decided they were not for me. In my first try with the heavy weaponry I destroyed 5 tanks with the guns alone. I was amazed at how precise they were and how easily they could be aimed. IIRC the issue with these guns (apart from their poor reliability) was that they couldn't be made to fire in synch with one another when used in pairs, resulting i a yawing oscillation due to the recoil pushing one wing back, then the other, thus throwing off the aim after the first shot, rendering burst fire useless. I have no problem with the guns initial accuracy (they are accurate but do take some effort to aim well), its flawless reliability (random failures/misfires aren't modelled in other guns, so why this one?) or its deadlyness (it takes 2 - 4 direct hits to kill a medium tank which seems believable) but I was wondering if it would be posible to model the out-of-synch recoil and resulting effect on aim? The Sh-37 is plenty effective as a single-shot weapon. We don't need it to function on full-auto as well EDIT: Sorry, I just realised I should've put this in the Suggestions Forum. Could a moderator pls move the thread for me? Edited October 24, 2014 by Finkeren
[TWB]80hd Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 (it takes 2 - 4 direct hits to kill a medium tank which seems believable) A round should either penetrate a tank or it shouldn't... these early German tanks shouldn't be able to stand up to 37mm from the side or rear, even a single shot should cause them serious problems. I never saw 2 rounds destroy one, flat on side, or rear. It appears to be purely a hitpoint based system, and honestly the 23mm take about the same burst to do the same job (and again, the penetration power of the 23mms SHOULD ruin a non-frontal or mantle shot on these era tanks) So, not to detract from your post, I definitely agree that the dead-on precision simultaneous fire should be addressed... where firing more than a burst should cause major yawing issues, but also that a well-placed burst should be enough to ruin non-Tigers from the side, rear, or top. Good suggestion.
=SqSq=Sulaco Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 Been flying solely in the IL-2 lately and have really racked up the ground kills. That being said I've found that with the 37AP I can destroy an average of 4 tanks per flight if I'm just going for tanks and not soft targets like arty as well. Usually I have to do 2 runs per tank unless I get really lined up in which case I can just dump on the armour and drop it in one pass(rare). I like the authenticity of your idea Fink but with the damage system as it is and was outlined by 80hd I think that it might put a serious damper on our ability to counter tanks appropriately. If the damage issues were addressed I think it would be an excellent addition. 1
EAF19_Charlie Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 Slightly off topic but still attributable to the IL2.. What on earth is that cylindrical looking thing that sticks out of the right wing leading edge close to the wing root? BTW good flying with you earlier today Sulaco

I agree with the general sentiment of your post. That is how things should be. However, given the limitation of the sim, I think a 2-4 hits with 37mm is an acceptable compromise. I have destroyed a Pzkw IV with two direct hits where both guns hit at convergence.
