HeavyCavalrySgt Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 I was thinking about how airpower influenced the Battle of Stalingrad, and specifically remembering that after 6th Army was surrounded Goring promised Hitler he could supply the Army by air until a relief force could get to them. He could not, as it turned out. Not enough aircraft, not enough places to off load supplies, and aggressive Russian air defense made it impossible. The Germans tried though. It cost them something like 800 aircraft in ~2 months destroyed or damaged beyond repair. I strongly suspect though that we won't get a chance to shoot up Ju-52s and Ju-86s though, for the same reason there are no non-playable aircraft in ROF. Too bad.
6./ZG26_Emil Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 Maybe if the LW hadn't leveled the city they wouldn't have turned it into such a horrendous battleground?

HeavyCavalrySgt Posted September 2, 2013 Author Posted September 2, 2013 Maybe if the LW hadn't leveled the city they wouldn't have turned it into such a horrendous battleground? I don't think I got your point? What reason was that? Anyway, knowing 777 they'll probably make flyable Ju-52s etc. 777 doesn't "cheat" on flight models in ROF, so they have a similar workload for creating a non-flyable planes compared to flyable ones, minus the need to make a cockpit. It apparently didn't make sense to make non-flyable planes for ROF, because they are working at making money through selling flyable aircraft. Perhaps we could have static transport aircraft to shoot up on the ground, and encounter He-111s running supplies, which is historical.
6./ZG26_Emil Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 I believe Jason said something about having static aircraft as ground objects in one of the two livestreams I don't think I got your point? The heavy bombing of the city made it difficult getting tanks in to the city and also created a very good battlefield for a defender. 1
HeavyCavalrySgt Posted September 2, 2013 Author Posted September 2, 2013 Sorry - I guess I was tired Emil last night! You are talking about other things that airpower did at Stalingrad. Got it now ;-)
BFsSmurfy Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 There was an off the cuff statement about the desire for an AI only Ju52 just to shoot at in the future at Gamescom, don`t hold your breath though as I can`t remember the exact statement and don`t want to start a 300 post thread about what the Ju52 should be like!!!!!
HeavyCavalrySgt Posted September 3, 2013 Author Posted September 3, 2013 I admit, I would be surprised to see -52s flying the unfriendly skies, but I would like to try my hand at General Paulus' diet plan. I am content with strafing them on the ground, if other aircraft times are carrying the mail.
MineFewer Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 There are other games in which you can shoot slow transports; it doesn't add anything to this genre. I spent quite a few hours flying Ju 52/3m in FSX, but it makes no business sense to include it in BoS, except if a 3rd partly modeler can do it for free (like FSX).

There are other games where you can fly an IL-2 against German targets as well. I still bought BoS, even though many of the planes in it are featured in other games. What it adds is realism which is a goal of this genre. Not every aircraft that was important to either side fell into the fighter or bomber category. I'd like to see things like Storchs going about their business. It adds depth to the game.
Vig Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 They used the Tante Ju as a bomber in the Spanish Civil War and in the invasion of Poland - perfect excuse to include it along with the PLZ-11!
Allons Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 My grandfarther served as OI- Offizier (Erster Ordonnanzoffizier) under Paulus with Schmidt as Chef des Stabes, according to his memories the pressure by soviet air force (air activities at all) were nothing compared with the overall presence of english/american air force in France ´44-´45. This changed naturally after kettling the 6th Army with Ju52 having to make it to Gumrak & Co. Best, Allons! 1

Impressive that your grandfather survived -- may I ask how he wound up back in Germany later? Was he evacuated before the surrender?
Allons Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Hi HeavyCav, later on he was sent out of the kettle to Hitler to give the OKW and Hitler himself a direct report about the overall situation of the 6th Army and request Hitlers permission to break out. Paulus and all the staff hoped, Hitler would rather believe a young highly decorated officer then the generals. He wasnt sucessful as we all know and Göring ordered him to directly return into the kettle, instead Görings own Adjutant der Luftwaffe beim OKW reordered my grandfarther to go home directly and marry. He did and was later on sent to staff officers training, made Major i.G. and served in Kuban, then France (with Rommel again, whom he often met in Africa) and then Rhineland with Model. Best, Allons!
MineFewer Posted September 4, 2013 Posted September 4, 2013 "realism", as interesting as it is for us who have studied the subject as professional soldiers, won't garner many sales of this game. If you were online in BoS, and going after some Ju 52's in your wooden-winged-wonder --- inviting the local 109 fliers to dive after and shoot your cute little head off (inevitably); from then on the last thing you would be thinking about is shooting a Ju 52 and any pretensions of "realism" go out the window...
HeavyCavalrySgt Posted September 4, 2013 Author Posted September 4, 2013 Wow, he lucked out, but it must have been hard to leave the guys he served with in that situation. I hope ignoring escort fighters is a dangerous strategy regardless of what they are escorting, SP or MP!
MineFewer Posted September 4, 2013 Posted September 4, 2013 (edited) I would hope everything done in a fighter from a bolshevik factory is dangerous. Edited September 4, 2013 by MineFewer
