Ohotnik Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 Hello gents, Griffin from Eagle Dynamics forums reporting in. Really looking forward to this sim and might pre-order it this month. I just visited the aviation museum today here in Vantaa, Finland. They have a temporary "Messers in Finland 70 years" exhibition where they borrowed one of the two surviving Messerschmitts in Finland from it's home in Utti. Shame I missed the one day when they brought a StuG from armor museum there too. I took some pictures especially of the engine and the cannon, something you don't see everyday. Hopefully you'll find them interesting! More high resolution pictures can be found on my Drive: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B7JS_-OtBYkJY2pFU3V5UlJEMzQ&usp=sharing The DB 605 A-1 The MG 151/20 is bolted to the rear of the engine and fires between the cylinder blocks through the propeller shaft. Yep, it's the Gustav's fist! I believe the cartridges are into this hole on the left side. And the business end! The views through the propeller shaft. Sorry, it was difficult to get a good shot with top mounted flash. And finally, the hero of the house. 4
thx1138 Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 Hi. Yes THANX for the pic's ! As a model airplane builder this is nice to have !
DB605 Posted September 7, 2013 Posted September 7, 2013 Thanks for the pics! I'm also planning to visit there if i found some time before end of september.
HeavyCavalrySgt Posted September 27, 2013 Posted September 27, 2013 Nice pics, thank you. It made we wonder how hard/easy it was to service those cannon and the MGs under the cowling.
HeavyCavalrySgt Posted September 27, 2013 Posted September 27, 2013 Awesome what you can find on the Interwebz. http://109lair.hobbyvista.com/techref/manuals/bf109g6u4.pdf Looks like the 30mm cannon at least pulls out backwards into the cockpit. I hope that big curved piece that forms the front of the cockpit is a firewall! The machine guns are very accessible, once you get up there.
FTC_Cule Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 The cannon through the propeller hub was a deadly weapon indeed, due to accuraccy and reliability. In fact, that is exacly why the MG151/20 or later the MK108 were given such amazing fame. At the early versions of the 109 (C1-E4) the gun through the prop hub would be more of a uneccessary item because the weaker DB600 engine wold vibrate too much, plus the fact that most E3/4 versions would have already two 20mm autocannons in the wing. However it was preety handy in the F,G,and K series, and yet some units would have gunpods in the wing to achieve even greater firepower. I hope this helps! By the way I have noticed that this 109 is a Bf 109/G-10, but... Why does it have the desert air cooling device installed? sorry, a G6, not G10
