Lensman Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 I dived on a JU87 at 580kmh tonight in a Yak-1. I was dropping 1500 metres in about 10 seconds and at an angle of 45 to the tail. I was a challenging target for the rear gunner. He got me with one small burst. This happens with Stukas everytime. The Luftwaffe stopped deploying JU87s over England because the RAF was effectively using them as target practice.
Sokol1 Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 Yes, that Stuka gunner is more efficient that He 111 ones with same skill (ACE).

If you are diving at him from direct 6 o'clock and pull enough lead to keep him targeted, you are effectively reducing the deflection to next to nothing for the rear gunner = easy shot, even if you are closing somewhat faster. When I play as rear gunner in MP, I love it when people dive on me from a dead six. From my perspective they are slowly sinking into my sights and I just have to aim slightly below the aircraft to deliver a killing blow. If it's a Bf 109 it makes it even easier, because the large horseshoe-shaped oil tank just behind the spinner makes up a large part of the target silhouette and the pilot takes up much of the rest, virtually guaranteeing that vital damage will be done. That being said the Ju 87 gunners do seem more deadly than average, but I think that has to do with the rather effective 'half turret' the gunner is sitting in, which allows quick traverse and a good field of fire.
FlatSpinMan Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 TWB guys - you can leave that kind of antagonistic behaviour outside please.

No not directly on his 6, I was 45 degrees to his tail and jinking as I came in too. The Stuka gunner is significantly more accurate and more likely to kill with one shot than the He111 gunners. Whilst I appreciate that the approach is critical to not getting hit I'm convinced that JU87s get lucky way too often.

I thought you meant you were diving down at a 45o angle at him from dead six. Yeah, I agree, that should be a difficult shot to make. Has it happened repeatedly? I must say that it doesn't fit my experience with even Ju 87 gunners, but it mightr be something to investigate, if it happens a lot to a lot of players.
Heliocon Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 In my experience I have not yet been shot down by an enemy fighter in the campaign, rear gunners on the other hand, many times have they spoiled my mission. Also its ridiculous when a rear gunner can shear your wing clean off from like 200meters.
LeadTurn_SD Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 My experience so far in the campaign: 1.) Some of the AI gunners are too accurate: The ones that hit me. 2.) Most of the AI gunners are fine: The ones that miss me. Eliminate the ones that hit me, and things will be perfect Seriously, they seem ok. If I'm sloppy with my approach I can almost guarantee I'll be hit. If I am a sneaky bastage, I usually wont get hit. Best wishes.
