pilotpierre Posted October 20, 2014 Posted October 20, 2014 Once the mission shows as being completed I (mostly) head for home rather than hanging around and finishing off the crumbs or other targets en route. Why, because I dont want to miss out on the points just accumulated and drag the unlocks out. If not for that I would stay hunting until all my ammo was depleted. However, I am still enjoying the campaign immensly. Finding it harder to stay alive as it progresses though, (flying predominately Russian a/c) as it was for the poor buggers during the real BoS. 5
Finkeren Posted October 20, 2014 Posted October 20, 2014 Well tbh it really didn't get "harder" for the VVS pilots as the battle progressed. They hot a low mark in October, where the VVS was more or less wiped out in that sector, but by the time Uranus started they were up to strength again, while Luftflotte 4 started to fall helplessly behind. As for strafing ground targets on the way home. That was actually stadard practice on many types of low altitude VVS missions. Pilots would for instance escort IL-2 to their target and to a sort of "exit point" like we have in the campaign and then strafe ground targets near the front line.

I find this just the realistic part of the game pilots did not tend to loiter around and try to get some opportunity target if not forced to (fighter pilots of 8th air force where told airplanes destroyed on the ground should count as destroyed in the air "victories" to make them do it) flying a combat aircraft is a dangerous business and pilots are like workers or employees do their day job and go home plus in a plane every landing or every extra you do could cost your live. I find this game very realistic and I hope you see it my way.
RainMan Posted October 20, 2014 Posted October 20, 2014 The term "unlocks" is just a poorly chosen term to begin with. From a historical standpoint, I can see that there were certain field-upgrades that became available based on the supply situation in the field and should be labeled as such. Unlocks reminds me about MMOs with micro-transactions built in... sigh. 3

1CGS LukeFF Posted October 20, 2014 1CGS Posted October 20, 2014 (edited) I find this game very realistic and I hope you see it my way. I don't see it your way. I've read plenty of accounts (that aren't of 8th AF pilots, BTW), that talk about how they strafed targets of opportunity on the way home. Edited October 20, 2014 by LukeFF 1

I have read enough books on the Russian/German air war to verify this.
71st_AH_Mastiff Posted October 20, 2014 Posted October 20, 2014 yes change it from "unlocks" to "field upgrades"; I think this will be a better reference to the issue.
kestrel79 Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 I like that too, we need more terms that suit a flight sim. No more unlocks, action points, ect.

Could you please give me some accounts of this please?! http://mig3.sovietwarplanes.com/pilots/pilots.htm will get you started. So will books like the Black Cross / Red Star series. Sorry, but I don't have time to write up accounts here.
Y-29.Silky Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 Rarely do I strafe ground targets on the way home. If you're like me and just want the unlocks for multiplayer, the risk is too much if something happens because you lose everything you accomplished that mission. And yes, "Field Upgrades", or, "Field Modifications" would make it sound way better.. 1

Luke I hope they have fixed or will fix the small bug that occurs where you are penalized for shooting/bombing/rocketing those targets of opportunity on the way home. I had it yesterday and hey, 30 points is 30 points And I know it was NOT a friendly target. Chief.
