Burning Yak wings?

Recommended Posts

Just installed the new update and flew a few missions in the "new" Fw 190 (pleased with that so far btw)

In an escort mission we encountered 4 Yaks of which I shot down 3. Every single one of them had a fire break out in the wing. I don't remember wing fires being prevalent in Yaks before, and AFAIK the Yak didn't even have wing tanks (at least not in the outer third of the wing, where 2 of the fires I saw broke out. Is this some kind of mishap with the DM and if not, what exactly is burning?

I do not think they have modelled the leaks Yak-1's had in their fuel tanks thus fire in outer 3rd of the wing? My bet is the spreading of fire when you rupture the tank and ignite fuel? Or just a misplaced effect.

No, it's definately not spreading (would be cool if that was the case though) In two of the cases the fire clearly started out near the wing tip.

Even the fire spreading to the wings seems kinda dubious tbh, because what is actually supposed to be burning? The delta wood that the wings were made of was extremely resistant to fire. It simply would not burn.

Modelling spreading of fire would be a nice effect, doesn't make you feel like staying too long in that cockpit ;) I have hit Yak/LaGG/La's near the wingtip and the smoke produced indicates fuel leak(greenish vapor). Who knows.

Here is a link that may help you to understand where are the fuel tanks in the Yak

The Yak-1

The original Yak fighter wing, a 10.0 meter span unit with rounded wing tips, carried four fuel cells, two in each wing. Well, technically there were four cells--the pairs in each wing, in fact, functioned more like a two-part single fuel cell, and were filled by a single access hatch. This filler point was positioned well outboard, just about at the gap between the two cells. The fuel gauge, itself, was mounted abreast of the cockpit near the pilot's line of sight.

and here is a blueprint of the Yak 9

Ok, so I'm definately mistaken. I had gotten the impression that only the LaGG and La-5 had wing tanks.

No problem then. :)

Don't forget the fuel gauges are directly on the wings for the Yak and that is not for nothing.

The only problem with those gauges is that you need to open your canopy to check them
