Landing Difficulties

I'm having a lot of difficulty in landing aircraft in this sim - I've been deliberately sticking with the LaGG-3, and I very rarely land it without causing damage to the aircraft.

I've flown WWII flight sim's for many, many years and am finding BoS to be the most challenging (especially with landings).

I must confess that I haven't put in a lot of CONTINUOUS hours on it, and that could be my problem.

BoS is an awesome flight sim - the graphics and the attention to detail are amazing ... and full marks to the developers who have kept us informed all the way!!

Your views on the flight modelling? Perhaps, the most realistic of all WWII flight sim's so far?

Check out Requiems videos re landing all aircraft in BoS

Yes to your last statement/question, without a doubt.

Well, it's definitely hard - but the Lagg-3 has a (questionable?) issue spinning more than most other planes.  My buddy and I have spent many 2-3 hour sessions simply taking off...landing...taking off...landing etc.  Definitely an art more than other games I've played.

I find it's tough too with the white out conditions to judge height in the last few meters when landing.  Keep trying, you'll get the hang of it.  The 72AG server is a good server for simple test flights.

Just like Pilotpierre I suggest : http://www.youtube.com/user/RequiemBoS

Then, a big YES to your last question.

I come from civil flight sims, and have also used DCS World for a while, but have just moved solely to IL2 BOS, well and ROF too because it comes from the same 777 team, and I believe I will be very positively surprised :-)

I find the way many aspects of the flight and overall physics modeling of IL2 BOS unique. Not being a fan of air combat ( this is changing :-/ ) I came here in the 1st place searching for fresh air and credible flight dynamics and ended hooked to this sim, to the "sensation of being there" that it's graphics, sounds, immersion bring me everytime I play it.

Keep trying - I have finally "mastered" the landings in both the LaGG3 and La5 - the other were never a big problem.

Also don't forget you're operating on snow / ice covered surfaces, and that also plays it's role on the difficulties we find handling these aircraft on ground.

Landing and ground handling are likely the hardest parts of flying in BoS, yet people spend many more hour practicing dogfighting techniques.

I personally find both the flight model and the ground handling in BoS extremely realistic. Is it the best? I don't know, as I have fairly little experience with the nearest competitor DCS (ClOD doesn't come even close, at least not in ground handling) and no experience at all with piloting IRL. Still BoS and RoF just have that "feeling" of flight, that I simply don't get from any other flight sim.

Hi Mungee,

i'd never really flown the Lagg3 but started the campaign in it, I play on expert but found I couldn't land it without huge bounces that constantly smashed the landing gear. I spent a few hours in QMB just taking off, flying a curcuit and landing. Out of 10 trips I destroyed my plane 9 times. You must fly a very careful approach at 170kph and touch down at 150kph, keep a very close look at your rate of decent and keep it to an absolute minimum. Now I can land it 9 times out of 10 but any sloppyness on landing results in damage and it hasn't become any easier. Concentration and an eye for detail is the answer in the Lagg3, most difficult to land in my opinion.

Good luck!

My experience is the exact opposite. I find that you need to go a bit faster than usual to properly land the Soviet fighters. If your speed is too low your rate of descend will be too high (you drop down on the tarmac rather than slide onto it) which is what gives you the bounce. I usually land the LaGG at 200km/h and the Yak even faster than that.

Only time I have a harder time landing any plane in BoS is when hard wind comes from side. Otherwise there are no problems whatsoever, just keep the stick pulled to your belly during rollout and vigilant on the rudder/brakes to keep plane straight. Also retract flaps the moment you have a touchdown.

I have noticed, using the tranning MP server ( BTW, a great one to learn the various aircraft ! ) that expert or custom mode, where you have control over prop RPM &/or pitch, mixture, etc, makes landings in the only two aircraft I was having more difficulties with - LaGG3 and La5 - a lot easier, even very straightforward, the same applying to taxiing. Maybe in Normal mode, when the simulation takes care of those "variables" for you, the end result, specially prop RPM, results of significant differences in the propwash that can make a difference?

I have had that feeling when ( rarely ) flying at EXPERT servers, but now that I started using that new server it became evident :-)

Which, IMO, is yet another aspect in favour of IL2 BOS, with it's most realistic mode being actually very realistic :-)

 Prop pitch 100% during landing.

I had for many years been more interested in the "flight" aspect flight sims than the combat, and have spent many hours in BOS simply flying around in the pattern, practicing crosswind landings, emergency landings, or navigating.  I have quite a few hours in the 111 and PE2, but have not even looked at level bombing.

Even in IL2 1946 I am sure I spent more than half my flight hours doing the same thing, and much of that time with carriers.

But the combat has grown on me, too, and each time I make a fatal error, I grit my teeth a little harder, and come back just a little more ornery.

I'm still flying patterns most of the time.

The LaGG and the La-5 are a little bit harder after touchdown because their tailwheel can't be locked; but the rollouts can't be done straight - just make sure to make only slight rudder corrections when the aircraft is still dashing down the runway at 100 kph or more. Don't slam the brakes right after touchdown, let the aircraft bleed off some speed before hitting the brakes.

The other thing is that the LaGG and La-5 land more easily with the flaps deployed to only 30 - 40 degrees. This will allow you to pull the stick all the way back for a 3-point greaser.

I've made a few videos to address landing and rollout issues a while ago:

http://youtu.be/VPuRNEbSB00 (this deals with what's perceived as bouncing)

http://youtu.be/jrNhJR7zYpE (this one demonstrates the very slight application of rudder on rollout; I also did not apply brakes until the very end, which caused overshooting the runway :))

http://youtu.be/wr79FuxTsDQ (watch this one if you want to try wheel landings, as opposed to 3-point landings; works better with some planes than with others)
