Attention to Detail: What Have You Noticed?

A few from me:

1. The cooling fan in the FW-190 - It's animated so you can tell it's geared to move with the crankshaft and spin faster than the prop.

2. After crash-landing in a mission, I noticed the rudder on my aircraft was being moved back and forth slightly by the wind.

3. The crash modeling at low level when coming into contact with a tree is pretty amazing now, with varying amounts of damage based on where you hit the tree.

4. Animation of wind socks at airfields.

What are some of the amazing details you've noticed so far?

A few things in this thread: http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/10776-theres-lot-there-goes-unnoticed/

And the parachute physics, not just a chute being popped but it actually obeys the direction and speed the pilot is moving in when the chute is deployed.

The prop wash, in SP if you fly behind an aircraft closely you will get bounced around quite a bit which throws off your aim - but if you pass through the prop wash at a critical AoA you will depart flight dependant on how you pass through the prop wash. Right wing pass through only, right wing stalls out (variable, not absolute - totally a calcuation there and not a canned output), same with left wing, same with centerline - you'll get bounced around and wallow about. Just awesome. It is an announced feature, but it is an actual dynamic calculation and not canned and I'm not sure many realize it is there.

Clouds move based on the airspeed set in the mission.

The He-111 and Pe-2 pilots manipulate the controls externally. It would be awesome if the other aircraft would too eventually. Nice for moviemakers for sure.

Aircraft parts that are damaged don't always fall off at the time of damage. Depending on stress they can fall off shortly after, or much later. I've made passes on aircraft and shot them up - passed them and swung around for another run, then a control surface or flap or entire stabilizer falls away. I shot up a LaGG with a 109, and was circling around to get on its six when it dove away, and the right wing folded then ripped away as it was slowly pulling out of its dive.

Clouds caste shadows. Not just on the terrain, but on all objects including aircraft. Flying below clouds, depending on the suns orientation to you and the clouds between, you'll pass through shadows and bright sun. It always happens in very heavy clouds, you'll randomly get times of brightness and other times of lots of shade but totally obeying the cloud cover between, or not, you and the sun.

Like RoF, all controls have sounds. Engine off, cockpit closed, move the stick around and the rudder and you'll hear the surfaces being manipulated via chains/rods/etc.

The 190's hood narrows and widens as it is opened and closed. Not just externally, but the center-line pivot point (the center line hinge) will adjust accordingly when viewed from inside the cockpit as well.

The Pe-2's bombbay doors are dropped by gravity, but are pumped back up by a pneumatic pump in the cockpit - the pump is animated in the cockpit.

All aircraft with external indicators for various deployments have them present - landing gear, and flaps are the most obvious - but also the Pe-2's dive brakes have an external "turkey timer" like it's landing gear to show the dive brakes extended or retracted.

how the fluorescent gauges react to the light source
it's an amazing touch that gives a great life to the cockpit

Just completed a night Bridge bombing sortie in a PE2. The brigde was guarded with a search light and AAA.

I did one dive bombing run at the bridge and dropped 5 of my 10 bombs. They took out the bridge, searchlight and AAA.

On the way home spotted what was obviously a trains head light off in the distance on the sbd side. I lined it up longitudinally and dropped the remaining 5 bombs in another dive bombing attack. Train kaput.

But, the cream on the cake - as I was approaching where the home field should be, off in the distance half a dozen flares pop off at intervals. I changed direction to head for the flares for a atraight in approach into the wind and as I got closer the fires light up along the length of the runway. Just prior to touchdown, 2 searchlights at the touchdown end of the runway switch on and aim their lights down the length of the runway.

Brilliant work devs.

On a attack airfield mission I dropped bombs and after that heard a loud bang. AAA got a hit on me. Mission was success so I decided to dodge AAA and fly home. Couple holes in my plane I happily arrived homefield and lowered gear and landed. Immediately after touch down my plane made sudden 180 degrees turn to the right and stopped.

I was little confused what the hell happened? When looking outside view I saw that AAA hit had blown one landing gear wheel off, there was nothing. Maybe it fell of when I lowered gear, I dont know.

After a while when I was admiring new runway bonfires the damaged gear collapsed

The mg of the 109 won't fire if the engine is not turned on because of the syn. The cannon will fire though

From an external view, the trim tab works, fantastic detail.

Only noticed on the LaGG, as I'd just crash-landed, and was admiring the not too badly damaged plane. I noticed the trim tab sticking up, and it works.

When the engine overheats, it might start to diesel after switching it off (was in RoF too, still amazes me though).

These are all great details and I think MANY here (sorry for the caps) don't realize the amount of cool stuff the dev team have built into this game.  Reminds me ... it would be really neat to model exhaust a bit more like in ROF.  109s were famous for belching a cloud of black smoke when at full throttle due to their poor grade fuel.  The dev could always do more and will but this game is pretty amazing right now.

Yesterday, during a routine take of with the IL2 the left main landing gear was not going up. After moving the lever up and down I decide that was a bug and restart.

Then I had the same problem. Restart again.

In the third attempt I swicht out external view, doing a "book" take off, not like the two previous ones and I find that the landing gear was up, both green lights.

I check the records on the previous ones and I see that during the take off I overpress the gear, causing damage on the struts.

That's detail bros. Just amazing.

Same as was mentioned above and I have to say coming in to your home airbase in the evening after a mission is just " Too Cool ", flares helping to locate base---fires lining the field--vehicle lights lighting the threshold--- Gravey !!!

The relationship of the prevailing winds, clouds , the way the planes handle,  ( I like it !!!! )  Also like the choices of paint schemes for the planes.

 Many thanks, well done !!!!

There are many amazing, small details - I didn't realize since I haven't flown any night missions that flares and lights can guide you into the runway - that is awesome.

Also didn't realize as was pointed out that the FW-190 hood widens and narrows as it opens and closes.

what do you mean when it opens and closes??? the canopy you mean with hood???

Yes, the canopy.

Saw contrails for the first time! They are beautiful and wonderfully modeled

If you look up, down, to the right or left, and switch to external view, your pilot will be looking in the direction you looked.

I remember in the old IL/2 - if you took a hit to the wing in the FW it would simply result in a huge loss of wing lift.

Here is BoS, I took defensive fire to my wing from a Pe-3 and disengaged. I could see bullet holes everywhere but what was really cool was the flight dynamics changed - you could "feel" the vibration and see the shaking in the aircraft as the damaged metal disrupted the airflow over the wing. I was out of the fight and just wanted to get back home.

I nursed the aircraft along, fearing that soon the stress would be too much and the wing would fail. To my relief, I made it back - but during the landing roll the right gear and wing collapsed and I skidded off the runway into the snow. I survived - a write off for the aircraft and a very immersive experience.

S!

I just do not like the "harlem shake" effect when hit, even after very minor ones. And the AAA chasing you all over the sky when there are easier targets, because you are a "level 10" pilot, is pretty lame and arcadeish. How would a crew of AAA know you are a "veteran"? Otherwise there are some nice details here and there if you look after them, shows that thought has gone into the development.

Hey,

crash landed today wheels up following engine failure, only the prop blade touching the ground bent, the other two not touching the ground stayed ok. Also flying the Ju87 yesterday canopy open and the sun cast a shadow of the canopy frame on the wing moving with the aircraft position, same mission, I saw ground fire coming up on the return to base, I jumped into the gunner seat to check for smoke only to find my wing man in flames, almost immediately his plane exploded into a few large pieces and the nose reared up before falling to pieces and dropping to the ground, it looked amazing. Great!
