Wait -- why did I preorder the premium?

Disclaimer: I'm not mad, so this isn't trying to be inciting.

As far as I can tell, now the only difference is I get access to the game a little earlier. At this rate, that'll probably mean a few days earlier (friendly jab). Oh, and I get a special tag near my name in multiplayer.

Am I missing something or do I just get to walk around simply knowing I'm such a fancy pants I'm willing to pay $20 more than everyone else for little to no reason?

Maybe I look at it like Kickstarter, I dunno.

Again -- not mad.

on the bright side, you get a ShKAS machinegun in the rear -  to ease that discomfort, you get a unique camouflage skin that can't be unlocked in the game

You still get 2 extra planes included that you would normally have to buy.

  • Aircraft at Launch:  Buyers of the Standard and Premium Editions will get the same base set of 6 aircraft (LaGG-3 (series 29), Bf-109 F-4, IL-2 AM-38 (1942 year's model, single-seat), Ju-87 D-3, Pe-2 (series 87 and 110) and He-111 H-6) with the possibility to earn 2 more aircrafts in the game (Yak-1 and Bf-109 G-2). You no longer have to earn these.
  • Special Aircraft Set: Buyers of the Premium Edition will also get access to a couple more special aircraft (La-5 and Fw-190 A-3) which cannot be obtained in the game, but can be purchased in our store after launch. Premium Edition still contains these, Standard Edition doesn't.

Well that's that then haha. I felt the same until I read this.

We always listen to our community’s opinion and we respect your input and concerns. Therefore we have decided to give all users the Yak-1 and Bf-109 G2 as part of the basic package."

I can understand the OP's concern

Yeah you're right....... this is confusing!

Buyers of the Standard and Premium Editions will get the same base set of 6 aircraft... with the possibility to earn 2 more aircrafts in the game (Yak-1 and Bf-109 G-2). Both Standard and Premium Edition owners had to earn these previously, now they are included.

Edit: Premium Edition owners were only ever going to get the La-5 and Fw-190 A-3 as extras, so nothing has changed; both Standard and Premium Edition owners win here, with this news.

Yep, took a bit to understand here too, but basically its just that they changed it so there is no unlock on the Bf109G-2 or Yak-1. This is good for the Russian side in particular as the Yak-1 with the VK105PF engine will be a more potent fighter than the LaGG-3 Series 29 with the same engine. The Yak-1 is just a better fighter.... that's not to say I won't be flying the LaGG-3.

I'm surprised that so many people are misunderstanding things here. I thought it was pretty clear from the get go.

Me too...

I'll admit that I was equally confused until I read this thread. The phrasing could definitely have been a little more clear.

Where are all these "why'd i do it" threads coming from?  READ what the announcement was before you post.  If you are that willing to part with 90 bucks without reading anything, I would also like 90 dollars, I will provide absolutely nothing to you other than a PM saying you're now part of the exclusive "donate 90 bucks to Hooves" club.

Buyer's remorse maybe?   :snicker:

I get it.

The trouble was, in the update today, I just had a mental fart and thought that they were including the bonus aircraft from the premium in the standard. But that's not the case. I didn't realize we were talking about FOUR different planes.

Yak, 109 g2, 190, LA5.

First two are now already unlocked at the get go while people who wait to buy will have to unlock them. Both preorders. The latter two are included in the premium but not the standard and will consequently have to be bought after release.

Sorry to have confused people. I'm clear now.

No worries MrGreezy, the commoners here are very keen on letting everyone know how smart they are and how dumb the rest of us are.

None of it's clear, this whole 'unlock' and you get this and not that, so it's expected.  No one really knows what will be done in the pre-release and in what phases of the pre-release schedule.    We haven't seen much, although the videos help a bit

And if you put your bank a/c details in the PM I am sure that someone will probably empty your bank a/c for you at no extra charge.

But I do agree with you about reading first.

I am still trying to talk myself into pre-ordering.

Cheers,

I am rather curious about the exact meaning of that "autumn 2013"... does it really mean September 22? :russian_ru: Because if yes, that would be two days after my birthday... ho-ho.

MrGreezy, don't worry about it. No one is picking on you (at least I'm not) and despite what some of the more sensitive among us have said, no one has labeled you stupid. Personally, I'm surprised at all the posts expressing confusion that I've seen and said so. I have been on these forums long, but came on a couple weeks ago and bought the premium package, not for the bonuses or perks, just to support Jason and the team. I've "known" Jason from various forums over the years and he has always been consistent in how he's presented himself. He's a flight simmer who loves to game, so much so he got into the industry for work! I saw, from the sidelines, how he redirected RoF and I got an opportunity to help out and did so. Now I just want to see the things I like continue and I know Jason will do his best with what he has so I try to help that happen. One hand washing the other kind of thing. ;) But I digress. Let's just look at the info available to us pretty much all in one pace so we don't have to search all over for it. This is what I saw when I went to the Pre-order announcement page: http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/802-il-2-sturmovik-battle-stalingrad-pre-order-program/

We are proud to present you our newest flight simulator - IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Stalingrad. This isa continuation of the legendary Sturmovik series and for more than 10 years it has been the standard for the combat simulation genre. IL-2 products have received worldwide recognition by gamers from every corner of the globe. This new entry into this series will offer virtual pilots and players an even more accurate reproduction of the legendary air battles of World War II. A new, higher level of physics modeling, damage modeling and aerodynamics has been achieved. Battle of Stalingrad will include several famous aircraft that have been recreated from detailed drawings and blueprints and they will fly over the most ambitious and detailed reconstruction ever attempted in a flight-sim of the most critical battle on the Eastern Front.

We invite you to become a participant in the development of BOS by placing a Pre-Order. By doing this, you will be the first to get access to the product and help us to make it even better. The combat flight-sim genre now needs your attention; modest budgets do not allow the realizationof everything virtual pilots dream about at once. But together we can truly revolutionize the genre and bring back a true legend to the sky!

If there are truly a lot of us, more than the skeptics think, and if the time of serious games for the PC has not passed, then we can make more with your support.

Let's strive for success together!

  • Early Access: Buyers of the Standard Edition will get early access in winter 2013 prior to public release. Buyers of Premium Edition will get the early access in autumn 2013.
  • Founder's Tag: Buyers of the Standard Edition will get a Silver IL-2 Sturmovik logo placed under their avatar in the community forum. Buyers of the Premium Edition will get a Gold IL-2 Sturmovik logo placed under their avatar on the forum.
  • Special Aircraft Set: Buyers of the Premium Edition will also get access to a couple more special aircraft (La-5 and Fw-190 A-3) which cannot be obtained in the game, but can be purchased in our store after launch.
  • Special Label: Buyers of the Premium Edition will get a special label inside the game interface next to their nickname which will stand out from the other players in multiplayer mode. You can turn it off or on as you wish.
  • Send a Gift to a Friend: We have also built a system to send gifts. Not only can you purchase a Pre-Order copy for yourself, but you can also purchase one or more copies of either edition per user account (email) and send it to a friend. You can activate one copy (digital key) on your account and send the others to friends, family or squadron mates. The gift system will be available with the opening of the early access period in autumn 2013 to buyers of all versions

So that's what we knew from the beginning until the latest announcement, which was this #30: http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/168-developer-diary/?do=findComment&comment=23568

Dear Pilots!

Today’s 30th anniversary Dev blog note is a perfect occasion for some presents, don’t you think?

It has been five weeks since we launched the IL-2: BOS pre-order program. We say thanks to everyone who pre-ordered either edition by September 1st! In appreciation of all who have pre-ordered by this date, you will receive two bonuses for your in-game IL-2 aircraft:

  • Weapon modification with a ShKAS machinegun in the rear.
  • Unique camouflage skin.

Both these additions will be available to you the very first day when IL-2: BOS is released. The IL-2 skin is unique and cannot be unlocked while playing the game.

More good news - we have decided to extend the early-access pre-order program for one more month until October 1st! Over the past few weeks we have revealed more and more information about the project, our technology, the team and our goals. Now many more potential pilots can make an informed decision about BOS and still participate in our pre-order program. We hope they will want to join you in the skies above Stalingrad this year.

In addition to extending the pre-order program, anyone who has already placed or will place an order before October 1st will receive a special skin for the Bf-109 F4.  This is just one of several other bonuses that will be announced for those that place a pre-order before the deadline. Stay tuned!

And finally the biggest news so far - both the Standard and Premium editions of BOS will now include all 8 flyable aircraft as a launching set of aircrafts! We always listen to our community’s opinion and we respect your input and concerns. Therefore we have decided to give all users the Yak-1 and Bf-109 G2 as part of the basic package. The dogfights will surely be epic fun for all.

And as promised the record of yesterdays live stream is now available with English subtitles on our YouTube channel

So what do we know from just those two posts at this point in time?

1) Premium and Standard both give early access to the BETA of this game. Premium users will get their download first, in "Autumn" of this year, Standard edition users will get early access in "Winter" 2013.

2) The pre-order program will end Oct. 1st 2013.

3) Both Standard & Premium editions will now come with 8 flyable aircraft, meaning the Yak-1 and Bf-109 G2 that were previously announced to be unlocked in the game no longer have to be. (found in announcement #23 here: http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/168-developer-diary/?do=findComment&comment=4610 )

4) Both editions will receive the Weapon modification with a ShKAS machinegun in the rear and the Unique camouflage skin along with a founder's tag.

5) Buyers of the Premium Edition will also get access to a couple more special aircraft (La-5 and Fw-190 A-3) which cannot be obtained in the game, but can be purchased in our store after launch.

6) Premium buyers also get a special label next to their nickname in game that can be turned on and off.

I mean just paying attention to and following the Developer Diary thread will give you tons of info (I haven't even finished going through it yet as time is limited...) and any contradictions I just pay attention to the latest dated post as being the most accurate. Sorry if my post came across as an attack on you, MrGreezy (or anyone else for that matter), but it wasn't. Just an expression of surprise that so many people seem to be confused about what's happening when I feel they have been relatively clear (except for maybe the concepts of "Autumn" and "Winter" as people seem to prefer exact dates) all along. So I can't agree with Recon's statement, "None of it's clear" and they have given up on the concept of locked planes, at least for the release, as stated. When they wrote this, "We always listen to our community’s opinion and we respect your input and concerns." even I knew it related to the locked plane issue, despite having very little time on this forum I did notice that a lot of forum goers did not like the concept. Maybe I'm more simple minded than some others around here and therefore think I understand more than I do. :D But I feel I'm being kept in the loop and that peole are being listened to. YMMV.

Very good post mate, should be a sticky!

I just bought/pre ordered the premium BoS to support Jason and the 777 1C team.  After seeing how awesome ROF is I felt it was the least I could do.

After 2 moves in 2 years and now with dog's and horses I just don't get that much time to play any games much anymore, but I'm hopiong this winter this will change.

So sm I the only one who looks forward to flying the LaGG 3 ?

I thought the same as the OP after reading the blog. I had to go back and read what comes with the Premium again. I hope "autumn" means October 1st!

You did it so you don't have to droll over screenshots and crappy videos posted on the forum, by others that already enjoy the game.

Right, well, as I've said I understand my error now. A simple error. A misread, a momentary lapse in concentation. If I was an unintentional prick about bringing it to light, my apologies. I could've done without the condescension but I was prepared for it, so I'll live. If the mods feel like deleting this thread, by all means.

Thanks all for clearing it up. Next time, I'll use my dumb peasant eyes to read the posts -- something that I clearly wasn't doing -- I mean, I know I've signed up for the email newsletter, but to actually read them?! NEVER! As per the wishes of the community I will send you all my private bank account information and consequently gut myself for being so ignorant.

Why does the pre order program give access to beta while all of the videos we`ve seen so far are merely pre-alpha version of the game? Am I missing something here?

Eh?

When we get the Pre-Order it will be a BETA..Im sure before we get it they would of gone through Alpha stage..dont forget they have still got a lot of work to do

Posted

So what diiference is there between pre-alpha and beta?

Posted

Only the Devs will know that at this stage as they have their tagets and objectives setout for each stage of development...all you need to know and is nearly every other case you 'test' a Beta..everyhting you see before that will be Alpha stage

Or at least thats my take on it

Posted

So how do you know you`re not getting an alpha that is only called beta?

Posted

You dont, you just hope when it goes gold its not still a alpha.

Ah, a politically correct way of trolling.  Time to check off a polite troll post off of my "things I have seen" list. But a troll is a troll.

Just like that lady that got hot coffee and put it on her lap and then drove off and spilled it, blaming burnt legs (and suing) the restaurant for not having gyro-static stable cups with welded lids that can stay on during a nuclear strike rather than taking responsibility for driving with a hot coffee cup on an unstable surface. Winning a settlement doesn't remove the fact she did an irresponsible act and paid for it.

it's the buyers responsibility to know what they are purchasing.

Thanks Avatar13 for compiling things.

But this does highlight a need though, like a FAQ for the general forum similar to sim hq's post, but for the changes going on with the pre order process in a single sticky that is updated officially.

But in the end, we should take it for granted it should be our responsibility to read and make a choice to purchase this game or not and keep ourselves updated on the game's progress.

I feel the devs have done a great job in being transparent with us and giving us the information we need to make a purchase.

I fully accept responsibility for my preorder of the premium edition regardless if BOS is CLOD'd or betamaxed or becomes the greatest ww 2 sim since IL-2.

Posted

I hope you're not calling me a troll.

Heaven forbid I use the community forums to ask questions. I went out of my way to ensure my OP didn't come off as hostile. I've since admitted my error in reading the update the devs gave. So maybe READ the thread and see that your patronizing isn't needed.

Again, totally fine if the mods close this thread. The issue is solved and clarified.
