HagarTheHorrible Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 (edited) Watching the live stream about the Freidrich I was thrilled at the sheen playing across the wings etc of the aircraft as the plane flew around. I was curious though does this effect carry through to the cockpit ? Cockpits have certainly come along in the last few years , 3d, shadows etc, but they still look as if they are lacking something, the surfaces all seem to have the same matt, given the excellent sheen effects on the surfaces outside the cockpit, what about those inside ? FuriousMeow Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Surfaces were dulled to prevent glare. Matte paint was intentionally used to prevent just that. 1
Freycinet Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 The sheen on the wings is enhanced by subtle bumpmapping, I am guessing, giving the slightly uneven look to the wing surface. Looks fantastic.
Potenz Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 the look of the metal on the wings and fuselage is outstanding, almost looks likes you can touch the plane
HagarTheHorrible Posted August 30, 2013 Author Posted August 30, 2013 Another effect, or at least detail, that would be nice given the excellent shine effect on the metallic surfaces of the externals would be if the dirt and grime wasn't. Again looking at the livestream, of the Freidrich, I noticed that the exhaust soot down the sides of the fusulage shone like the rest of the skin and just thought it would have been nice if they didn't. Would/could that be managed through the various layers when painting skins, or is it not possible to apply a specific wear/dirt skin on top of a base skin that has a different shine effect ?

There's lots of chipped paint in there, and even then, with matt paint you still get a sense of different materials under the paint, wood, metal etc, just as it is on the externals. I don't know if it is bump mapping that gives this effect of different glow/shine and maybe adding it to the cockpit would over tax the GPU but it, to my mind at least, it would add to the "actually being there/existing" physical object feeling, that one gets from the externals.

It can be done, just depends on how good the specular maps are. I'm no expert on it but I have experimented using the DCS P-51 model and playing with the spec map and various layers like dirt/grime, paint, etc. versus bare metal. Here is a post war RCAF skin on the DCS model, looks better in game with the shine changing as the model maneuvers but you can see what I mean in the still shot looking at the grime around the shiny parts:

It's understandable that computer players want their aircraft to look like their shiny new car, but that's not what aircraft and in particular the cockpits looked like back in the day.

True, but different materials look different, just as on the externals the wood and metal have different sheen effects. I don't think anyone would want a brand spanking new default cockpit, but it would be nice if it caught up with the rest of the effects and not just looked like it was painted from the one effects pallet.
JtD Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 (edited) OK, some attention to detail certainly wouldn't hurt. I just don't want it to end up like the CloD bathed-in-oil cockpits. They look horrible with all that gloss. Edited August 30, 2013 by JtD
J4SCrisZeri Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 (edited) I used to love the glare/reflection effects from canopy glass in CLoD. I hope we'll get the same level in BoS As for the BF109 livestream (expecially that frame caputred and posted here) the plane metal is wonderful, part reflective (the yellox nose on the wing...) and part wornout. I love weathered war birds so much. Edited August 30, 2013 by J4Scriszeri
