Bravo!! I absoutly love it.  I think the unlocks are a great way to reward achievenment.

I am typically a 190 driver but I tried flying a night IL-2 mission and I think I am changing my MOS!!  Convoys, trains, distant fire fights and Triple A to wake you up.

You have to play on expert with no map aids.  Navigating at night in the barren winter Russian country sided is an awesome challenge.

Excellent work,

Hey Hawg.

Welcome.

I'll look forward to getting a night mission. BoS does the night time environment really well.

4 in a row here.

Me too, but on intercepted mission. 10 p.m. 1 a.m. 4 a.m. And 6 a.m. And finaly at 7.30 in the sunrise. Looks cool but searching bombers at night in expert mode without ground control is very hard

Just got a night mission supporting a group of PE2s in the campaign. Awesomely atmospheric.Stupid germans left their nav lights on though so I could spot em a mile away. We went stealth of course. :)

That's the problem with random, can throw up the same number several times in a row.

Remember when iTunes came out with its 'random music' feature, they had to change it from true random to 'different artist/different album' because people complained they would get four in a row from the same artist or album.

First mission in a 109 at night fall, not too happy to see my wingmen flying merrily for the whole mission with their nav light on....guys, it's a combat mission, you know?

Totally missed the bombers I had to attack, but of course my wingmen quit formation without warning and went their way and shot them down. One of my wingmen was also shot down, should teach him to attack at night with his nav lights on

As I was about to land I saw the searchlights going on, two Yaks had shadowed me all along, with the help of my comrades of the Flakabteilung I shot both down.

All in all pretty fun mission except for the nav light stuff. Still the succession of random generated mission is really lacking as long as immersion is concerned for me, can't really consider it a campaign.

I also like the campaign, I feel is a right starting point to play the sim and aslo a starting point for more features to come(maybe ;) )

I jotted down all the pilot orders keybinds and use them a bit when flying SP. (They really need to provide a visual interface for those controls like maybe RoF winkey solution. I'll never remember them all.) I think the pilots are set to "do what I do" at the start of the mission. I found that toggling my nav lights made them turn them off... at least that seems to be what happened. Whatever I'm doing right I haven't flown a night mission with wingmen acting like targets since.

Indeed, the campaign is awesome.  The unlocks are a nice dangling carrot to get peeps to try it.  I have had ALOT of night missions, to the point where I really appreciated the day missions wherein I could see what I was shooting at lol.  And yes I did notice those 109s being nice enough to leave their nav lights on....; got more than one kill by "sneaking" up on a few.

Just realized that one of the things I miss from RoF career mode is the missions where you are lower ranked and not commanding the flight. Just sayin.

Have you tried giving them the "continue the mission" or "assume the leadership" commands? (Not sure what the difference is).  These work in RoF - take off first to avoid accidents then try this. You may be able to tag along as a wingman.

Cannot check myself - gaming PC out of action this week for repairs....

Thanks! I'll try these and see how it goes. Though it may sound boring having AI command you I quite like it as you have more to do on the way to a mission; maintain formation, protect flight lead, etc. It's not much but gives you a few more things to think about in those long flights tin and out of the AO than just pointing in the right direction and expecting the AI to catch up. :) I wouldn't want to fly that way all the time, but I think it adds to immersion in an AI campaign. Maybe that's why I have been enjoying the occasional escort mission.

Also it is surprisingly difficult (to anyone who is not a RL pilot used to formation flying).

Just played a night mission in the campaign as a Stuka. Apart from my wing man eating dirt 20secs after take-off it was an eventful mission. Bombed some arty with 3x250kg bombs ( i think they need to fix the area of affect of the bombs, 20m from a direct hit should do some damage or rattle some brains).

Anyway one of my two top cover planes (BF109f4) got shot down by a yak, until I came it to shoot it down (should have gotten more points for that). Found some trucks, shot them up, continued on back to base when I discover a half track firing on a Russian ammo dump. The HT fires a flare for assistance (which is pretty f***ing cool), I take out a truck with a 50 cal on it. I do a few more strafe runs, but my shots are lousy. Fly back to base, land , taxi into a bunkered service area, then saw a fellow troop walk past.

Must say I'm impressed, there is certainly a heap of stuff going on. I'd like to see some stuff move across the river Volga as the Russians resupply each night. Would have been better if it was with 8 other stukas, and set at a particular squadron(this has been talked to death I wont add to it).

Not impossibly difficult. I never flown a real aircraft in real life, but I always seemed to get formation ok. RoF was a major school for me too, and it's a very welcome experience to any of whom are new to BoS. It's more a matter of practice, even only virtualy.

How did you get your wingmen to turn off their nav lights? I would turn mine off, but my wingies would stubbornly stay lit for all to see. Is there some command I don't know about?

Night missions make landing VERY INTERESTING. Where's a flare path when you need one? :)

In fact, in the mission I flew last night, my wingies had their lights on, while the He111 we intercepted didn't. Quite hard to spot, if it wasn't for the map and the bloody indicator (still flying normal, but with CEM). :)

Dawn/Dusk missions are my favourite. I hate mid-day missions due to the massive whitewash on everything (even with SweetFX) I can't spot anything.

Just had a hellish mission in my Il2 campaign attacking an airfield. Managed to knock out most of the targets while harassed from above by four 109s which our escort tackled, but we lost most of the escort. Then had two sets of 109s attack us on the way back ! Got hit and had to nurse the plane home smoking and losing height. Thought I would have to bail but managed to crash land on the runway just after the engine died. Looked back at my gunner and he was shot up in the turret, must have got hit way back at the airfield and I never noticed :( Plenty of immersion going on here !

Maybe you are finding it easy (in the screen shots) because you are in a Vic with a bomber?  In a fighter finger 4 formation you have to be at the leader's 4 or 8 o'clock, so you can barely (if at all) see the leader while looking straight ahead.  Flying straight and level is hard enough as it is not easy to match speeds given how sensitive throttle controls are in the game.  Any changes in direction are harder - probably more so than in RL as the leader in games will sometimes make sharp turns onto a new heading without any warning.

Regarding throttle sensitivity, try mapping it to your mousewheel. It works really well.

I've always enjoyed that in the original IL-2 also. It was a great way to practice formation flying.

Not sure. But I usually set my wingmen to "copy me" (left-alt 4) or "cover me" (left-alt 5) and remember noticing that I had turned on my nav lights by mistake, so toggled them on and off for a bit (i can never remember the mapping) and for the rest of my mission the wingmen flew dark. Maybe if they see you turn your lights off they'll take notice. I haven't flown another night mission yet to test.

But then I would have to graft another arm onto my shoulder given how my "cockpit" is set up: possibly taking dedication to flight simming to a whole new level.... :o:
