Bulkhead Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 Hi, sorry if this is covered elsewhere, I couldn't find anything. I was looking for markings and liverys (in a illustration book and on internet). I noticed that every G-2 model I found a drawing or picture didn't have the tail gear retracted. I can't find any info about it and in the book it say that it was fixed on a G-10 model. Anyone have any idea? Just curious.
LLv34_Flanker Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 S! Earlier series of G-2 had retractable tail wheel. Later it was made a fixed one to get rid of the mechanism and save weight. Speed difference was about 10-12km/h.
Bulkhead Posted October 10, 2014 Author Posted October 10, 2014 Thanks. So it wasn't historically wrong with the G-2 in BOS. Still haven't found any drawings or pics of a G-2 with the retractable tail wheel.
Crump Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 and similiarly on G-6 tailwheel 1/2 retracted. http://kurfurst.org/Performance_tests/109G1-6_datasheet/109G_perftable_EN.html Trials at E-Stelle Rechlin on a Bf 109G-1 - the results were later becoming the official specifications for the type in a Kennblatt issued on 8 March 1943 - resulted in 650 kph at 6400m; the tested aircraft appearantly had a fixed tailwheel resulting 12 km/h speed loss, which needs to be taken account. As a late production Bf 109G-2, WNr. 14 783 / MT-215 was fitted with an enlarged, non-retractable tailwheel as opposed to the previously retrractable one; this change caused -12km/h loss of speed at SL. This needs to be kept in mind when comparing the results with previous trials of the Bf 109G featuring retractable tailwheels. http://kurfurst.org/Performance_tests/109G_MT215/109G2_MT215_en.html
