SCG_Neun Posted October 8, 2014 Posted October 8, 2014 Does anyone remember Their Finest Hour: The Battle of Britain or Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe? by LucasArts? These campaigns IMO are head and shoulders above nearly every sim that has been released since (Exclude F4, EAW, Rowan BoB). You had decisions to make preflight. Targets strategic or tactical. You had limited machines of varying quality available IE Some missions that had airfields near a target you needed to protect might only have Bf-109G-6 instead of Fw-190 or Me-262 AC so you flew 109's You could move squadrons to different airfields Losses were felt when you could only field 2 rotten in a mission because of attrition. you could put resources into devloping new technology or beefing up output of current types with mods Your missions had IMPACT on the War Front - Targets on factories meant less aircraft types being produced - fuel refineries less fuel, etc. You could fly in several missions in one day as several pilots and build the AI logbooks up These games were in the late 80's to start. Their graphics were primitive and sim is a word that was used erroneously BUT they were immersive and entertaining to the point you kept coming back every day wondering what was going to happen next or what you could achieve - conditions necessary for the attempted sea landing in England? If these campaigns were combined with the sim technology of today we'd have a SP winner; I never have understood why this hasn't happened yet. Take Panzer General (AKA Panzer Korps) and combine it with IL-2 voila! This is the SP I have been looking for for years. Keep adding planes, theaters, terrain and I'd keep buying. Do the whole war I'll buy it and I think many other would too. Well they say that people don't like those kinds of games anymore.....but I sure do.... 3
unreasonable Posted October 8, 2014 Posted October 8, 2014 Help please. How? Especially the map icons One option is to turn off the HUD (H key) - which gets rid of pretty much everything. (Unfortunately gets rid of the chat box as well). If you bring up the main mission briefing map (O I think) you get the full screen map which has no plane icons on it. You can rezoom on this and get rid of the text briefing boxes before take off. Just do not crash when you are looking at it. Not sure about the minimap - I think it is impossible to read so I never use it.
unreasonable Posted October 8, 2014 Posted October 8, 2014 Does anyone remember Their Finest Hour: The Battle of Britain or Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe? by LucasArts? I remember those days. Interesting SP concept - essentially combine the sim flying element with a war game, (two of my favourite PC genres). Another way that works is to combine the sim flying with a more personalised human role play element, as RB3D or, eventually, RoF did rather well. For the life of me I cannot quite see what the current BoS SP is supposed to achieve, since it does neither of the above, unless it is purely supposed to be a training exercise to prepare new recruits for MP. 2
LastRightsXIII Posted October 8, 2014 Posted October 8, 2014 Didn't know H did the o map too. Thank you. S!
Livai Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 Its about a plane called Ju-52 that was shown at the chapter 4 video but where is that plane ingame?
No601_Swallow Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 I got a medal! "For bravery in the battle near Kalach". Now, in this particular mission, I did actually do something sort of brave. My 109 port wing was a bit swiss cheese, but I spotted a 2v2 skirmish a kilometer or two to the south as I was flying home. I was a bit worried that I might lose the wing, but I decided to intervene. Scratch another YaK! Anyway, my wing stayed on and I completed the mission fine. So, does everyone get one of these gongs? Or am I "The Special One"? Being more serious for a moment though, I was wondering if this is just part of the campaign, that 5 missions into, say the third part of the campaign everyone gets a "bravery" medal, or was it generated in response to actions I took in the mission? If the latter, that's rather cool and an impressive bit of technical achievement. [Another thing: for what it's worth, I find I'm flying quite a lot of the missions on "Normal", but with a lot of the HUD and CEM aids turned off - it allows me to cheat when I want to, while helping me to feel good about myself! But I'm also flying the missions as "short" missions, so I start close to the action, do the necessaries (or not), but then fly all the way home - I get as much satisfaction out of greasing a landing as I do from downing an opponent. Weird, I know, but... In any case, the lack of narrative context notwithstanding, I'm really enjoying the UQMB/SP campaign. Does most of what I want out of SP play. Diamond stuff!]
Trooper117 Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 (edited) lol... I've got quite a few gongs now for all sorts of things! 1. Interceptor over Stalingrad 2.
