JGWjarad Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 I apologize if this was discussed previously, but has always been on my mind. I really hope for a good working cockpit VoIP in multiplayer at some point, not only would it add to the immersion greatly but it would be an extreme convenience and I think strengthen teamwork. To get picky, or creative :-), the sound should be distorted to create an authentic wwii radio sound. Anyone see any negatives to this, besides some people not having access to a mic?
FuriousMeow Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 Somewhat, it would have to be refined. No global, maybe channel based but preferably proximity based. You'd also have to know who you are talking to, without icons it will be difficult/impossible to know who is near you unless you already organized your flight together.
JGWjarad Posted August 23, 2013 Author Posted August 23, 2013 True about the localization of other pilots, although I think I would prefer friendly icons at close distances similar to WT. I would like to see team VoIP, not global. It is a pain to type out for help or strategic discussion rather than hitting a button and talking in game, in my opinion, especially in a fire fight.
=LD=Hethwill Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 As I see TS & Mumble can be used with 3D positional plugs, given we have some sort of SDK to work with. Given the premise of BoS MP to be hosted by anyone where does a Centralized VoiP system enters the equation ? Plus no icons even close to WT ( hate the gigantic billboards ). If anything a very unobtrusive system like in RoF. But back tot he VoiP... how to overcome this with private hosted servers ?
JGWjarad Posted August 23, 2013 Author Posted August 23, 2013 Hethwill, good point. I'm not sure how much bandwidth the proposed VoIP would take up for the hosted server to accommodate. Maybe a lower bitrate option? It's a tricky subject I don't have the answers too, but would like to see.
Tektolnes Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 As almost all squadrons already use TS / Mumble there's not much incentive for flight sim developers to bother to spend time developing in game VOIP. Also, if there's any sort of disadvantages to in game VOIP e.g. sound distortion, possibility of enemy eavesdropping, damage knocking out your radio, etc. then the reality is that players won't use it and will stick with TS / Mumble to coordinate their squadrons. 2
76SQN-J0NJ0N Posted August 24, 2013 Posted August 24, 2013 It would be cool if VOIP in the cockpit had static interference that got worse at very long ranges.. 1
gavagai Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 Falcon BMS has in-game comms that are really neat to use. You have to tune your uhf and vhf radios to the correct frequencies, you hear a mic step, etc. I wish more WW2-and-later flight sims would offer such a feature.
Creepermoss Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 (edited) I'm not a fan of In-game VoIP, for a number of reasons. Teamspeak and other such programs are much easier to police, don't take any time away from the title's development, and it's left to the individual user to decide if he's interested or not. Sethos Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 Wish someone would do a plugin akin to ACRE in ArmA, which hooks into Teamspeak. Then add some 'radio effects' so it's not just this crystal clear voice - Breaks immersion a bit.
Freycinet Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 Atag_Colander did the wonderful WWII radio plugin for the Teamspeak. I use it all the time when I fly on the Atag server in CoD. Soooo good for immersion. Not the jarring modern super-clear voice comms that make it sound as if people sit next to you in the cockpit. Hear it in use in my Blenheim Attack movie (see my sig). I agree it would be nice to have comms with an old-fashioned WWII radio sound in-game. A lot more people would use it if it came in-game and was trouble-free.
Skoshi_Tiger Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 I suppose it would come down to how good a system could 1CGS provide given the extremely tight time frame and limited resources give the existence of several very good systems already in existence. DO they really want to divert those development resources away from their core business of making a flight sim? Also who will police the VoIP channel for a given server/game? Would the server operators also have the ability to administrate the VoIP channel? Given that many server operators maintain their own Teamspeak (Etc) servers, they also have the ability to kick off anyone who is abusing the service. So if some 'walley' decides to F-Bomb the channel or spy or displays anti social behavior, the server operators need the ability act as the situation requires. Cheers!

While integrated VOIP is nice (especially when playing with randoms, easier to communicate), I'd like to see some sort integration with 3rd party software. I'm not sure of the difficulties involved in trying to get permission to have Teamspeak or some other VOIP program offered as an option during an install of the sim, but I would certainly like to see something to encourage new players to get into coms - so much more fun when you can easily communicate with your team!
