dburne Posted September 27, 2014 Posted September 27, 2014 I run a GTX 770 4Gb and am very pleased with the results.
LLv34_Flanker Posted September 27, 2014 Posted September 27, 2014 S! 290X will blow the 770GTX out of the water. Get an Asus DirectCU II for example, very quiet and runs cool. And is fast.
Zettman Posted September 28, 2014 Posted September 28, 2014 Why not a GTX 970? It comes with 4GB by default and you can get one for about 310€, that close to the prices of the GTX 770 4GB versions which are around 280-300€. The GTX 970 has a better performance and eats less power. Also they scale better in SLI than the old GTX 770 if you consider upgrading in the far future. Zettman 1
Dakpilot Posted September 28, 2014 Posted September 28, 2014 At the moment the GTX970 seems to be the performance/price killer, almost R9 290X performance at a much cheaper price while being cooler and quieter and same VRAM However this may lead to some big discounts on R9 290X series in near future....likewise you may find some bargain GTX770 4GB due to 970 Or rather just sell a kidney and get GTX 980 sorted Cheers Dakpilot 2
Afwastus Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 I'm pretty happy with my GTX 970 so far, it runs quietly/cool and the game looks gorgeous on Ultra (and runs smoothly). It has some pretty nifty features as well that may become useful in the future and if you can still get one for around $350ish dollars I'd say it's a better option than an R9 290 or R9 290X.
inexus Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 The best bang for buck right now seems to be the GTX970 with custom cooling as they have a lot of overclocking potential. I got a GTX 780 and get around 30-40FPS on ground and 60-65FPS in air. I'm going for the MSI GTX 980 with twin frozr cooler to overclock it and get the max performance on a single card (dollar per frame this is more expensive than the 970 but it depends on your appetite for FPS). Cheers
VR-DriftaholiC Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 Yep 970 is the only card right now. except for 980
Gambit21 Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 except for 980 Nah - only if you have money to burn. Grab an MSI 970 and you can overclcock it to stock 980 levels without breaking a sweat, but no need really. The real story this time around is the 970.
VR-DriftaholiC Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 (edited) Nah - only if you have money to burn. Grab an MSI 970 and you can overclcock it to stock 980 levels without breaking a sweat, but no need really. The real story this time around is the 970. You can also overclock a 980. Of course the 970 is better performance/dollar but then that typically climbs as you step down rungs in the GPU hierarchy. Your opinion seem biased on price while I'm solely referring to performance. Gambit21 Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 Of course you can overclock the 980, but that's beside the point. Stock the 980 is WAY more than fast enough, a few clicks and the 970 is as fast as the 980. Games are not pushing hardware like they used to unless you're driving multiple 40" monitors at once or insist on 65fps at 4K which your eye can't detect vs 55 fps anyway. That extra $200+ doesn't pencil out for most of us. If you like saying you have bleeding edge stuff or have the money to burn go for it. Or if you have huge high res monitor and running Crysis 3 at 4k/and screaming FPS is what you're after and don't want to overclock a 970 - then again the 980 makes sense. I went bleeding edge with my GTX 580, but it doesn't make sense this time around - and I run high end 3D apps too - nevermind games. If the 970 was another hundred more, or the 980 a hundred less, or the 970 didn't perform so amazingly even in comparison to the 980 I'd be singing a different tune. This is really almost a unique release - never in my memory as the "little brother" card been so close in performance yielding such bang for the buck. For many it makes sense to put that extra $200 to work elsewhere - YMMV.
VR-DriftaholiC Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 (edited) "Fast Enough" is subjective. 980 Alone will most likely not feed a Oculus Rift at 75hz let alone the upcoming 1440p 90hz version on a ultra preset. Pullshit about your eye not detecting difference between 65hz vs 55hz is total garbage. Your eye doesn't see in FPS and it's been proven by the US Air Force that the human eye can detect changes over 300 FPS. Having owned 60/75/120 & 144hz monitors I can assure you the difference is night and day. Edited October 1, 2014 by driftaholic
1PL-Husar-1Esk Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 (edited) I play 3D vision and and 60Hz for each eye is enough, fps are variable. I can't say that i'm not enjoying because of 60Hz in 3D. I know the difference in 60Hz and 120 Hz or CRT in 2d mode is huge (was playing competitively quakeworld -the first quake ). Edited October 1, 2014 by tomcatqw

Well now you're moving goal posts. Your money - I know where mine is going this time around. I don't care about OR though...maybe I will at some point, but not yet. Edited October 2, 2014 by Gambit21
Potenz Posted October 4, 2014 Author Posted October 4, 2014 well finally after reading various reviews and your advice, i got a GTX 970, this monday i have to go to get it and install it, so later on tuesday i will tell you how it runs BoS regs Potz
DD_bongodriver Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 I just threw down the money for a GTX970 to go with the rest of my new build.......holy crap am I getting broke.......had my finger hovering over the buy button for a 980. 1

Hopefully though this will be the last upgrade for a few years.

Skybro Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 I upgraded to a 980 from 680, it eats BoS for breakfast I would highly recommend it. MSI with TwinFrozr or Gigabyte with Windforce.
Gambit21 Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 Running the 970 now - even the 580 "ate BoS for breakfast" as I just said in the other thread. With a few clicks in Afterburner I have the 970 running just as fast as your 980 at it's stock speed. 980 is good for bragging rights though!
