taffy2jeffmorgan Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 Hi All. I have been contemplating changing my OS , from Windows 7 to 8.1, reason being, I have had a problem with 7 not being able to download and install updates for sometime. Also games like Crysis 3, Metro last light and Metro 2033 start but then stop And i was wondering if the lack of updates that are not keeping my PC up to date may be causing the problem with the games ? I have a 570 GTX with the latest Nvidia driver plus 8 Gig memory I have tried emailing Crysis support but they don't even reply, shame really because Crysis 3 is such a great experience. So could 8.1 be the solution ! its frustrating seeing all these great games on my desktop and not being able to play them. Thanks.
Emgy Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 (edited) Do you get an error message when you try to update? There may be some help to be had here: http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/ If you can get windows 8.1 for free or cheap enough, I like it, it's easy enough to activate classic desktop instead of the tablet UI. BTW I get a lot stuttering when playing Clod on W8.1 on this PC. When using W7.1, I get no stutters at all. Edited September 22, 2014 by Calvamos
Mastermariner Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 W 8.1 was (is?) a pain in the ass to get used to but it is performing as is expected. No hiccups in CoD or BoS. Master
Herbs107 Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 It sounds more like your operating system is corrupt, than the games are causing it. If it was okay before then something has gone wrong in the windows registry, and it sounds like it was just getting worse and worse. You have basically two options, reformat and re-install windows 7 or buy 8.1 and reformat and install that. Both are a pain but a new install will give a new slate to work with. 1
taffy2jeffmorgan Posted September 22, 2014 Author Posted September 22, 2014 Thanks for the advice, and if i,m going to start with a clean slate I shall go for Windows 8.1 Cheers. JM.
1./JG42Nephris Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 (edited) Errgghh....stick to Win 7 buddy. Win8.1 is not bad at all...but... you know your Win7, although not much changed, however some basic elements did. Win8 doesnt bring you real benefit but Hyper-V. Win 9 is in startup for 2nd Q. 2015. LLv34_Flanker Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 S! Using Windows 8.1 64-bit and no problems with games or applications. And it is faster and more responsive than 7, too. I never thought of 8.1 being better, but for me it has been. And that Start menu, cost me a few Euros and works great
VR-DriftaholiC Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 Stick with 7. I ran 8.1 for the last 6 months and while there are some under the hood improvements it's overall worse. Wait for 9 typically the odd number windows are better
LLv34_Flanker Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 S! I feel 8.1 is OK. I disabled all dingledangle and dazzle by setting the to "best performance" in advanced settings, do not need Aero or other flashy things. Then added the start menu and it looks just like 7, but considerably faster. Windows 9, propably called just Windows, could be an improvement over 8.1. But that remains to be seen.
Dakpilot Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 Have read reports/tests that Win 8.1 gives significant performance/FPS benefits in games, however these have been latest release DX11 ones...has anyone noticed a difference when upgrading from Win 7 with DX9 titles such as BoS Cheers Dakpilot

So would there be chance that a re-install of Windows 7 could solve the problem I am having with the games I mentioned ? [ corrupt files ]
Herbs107 Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 (edited) It certainly would help, install windows and then let windows update first, then install latest graphics driver and then re-install all your games and patches. It will take a little time, but should work perfectly after that. Edited September 23, 2014 by Herbs107 1
