HagarTheHorrible Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 So, very few of us have tried it, very few titles support it and those that can be made to work are adapted by tinkering rather than serious fundamental changes. However, if we were to indulge in a bit of blue sky thinking ( I reckon as simmers we're probably quiet good at that) what changes will VR bring to the flight simmers experience ? What things will it degrade, what will it enhance what sort of things, that maybe we don't even think about, or even take for granted will change in 3D VR ? What do you think will be more difficult and what will become easier ? What, if anything, will we have to sacrifice to achieve satisfactory frame rates ?
DD_bongodriver Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 What, if anything, will we have to sacrifice to achieve satisfactory frame rates ? Money. What things will it degrade Nothing IMO what will it enhance Immersion and sense of presence, 3d depth perception, sense of speed, overall flying skill. What do you think will be more difficult and what will become easier ? Drinking while playing will become complicated, but looking around in a true representation of human physiology will be easier 1
VR-DriftaholiC Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 He pretty much summed it up. In my mind it's revolutionary. There is nothing on the horizon technologically that I'm more excited about.
J2_Trupobaw Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 (edited) If by VR you mean head mounted displays (not closely the same thing), thing that may suffer is simpits building. Sitting in one cockpit and wearing another on your head may be one to much, even if problem of using controllers will be solved. As with every thing that looks impressive to consumer and is relatively cheap for creators to apply, it may lead to dumbing down games while making heavy use of HMDs to cover it, until HMDs stop being a novelty. See how introduction of CD-Rom led to few years of medicore games stuffed with multimedia content in late 1990s, or how synergy of CGI and 3d cinema is replacing screenwritewrs and stunt professionals with choreographers right now. I suspect the "If you can't do it right, do it in 3d" moviemaking principle will be embraced by games devs for few years. In case of sims, it may lead to "warthunder realism with plane bits going towards you, gravity style" approach. I hope it won't. Edited September 18, 2014 by Trupobaw

HagarTheHorrible Posted September 18, 2014 Author Posted September 18, 2014 What difference will depth perception and 3D make to shooting, head on passes, collisions, low level flying, landing pattern positioning ?
DD_bongodriver Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 What difference will depth perception and 3D make to shooting, head on passes, collisions, low level flying, landing pattern positioning ? it will make all the difference in the world, we are simulating a 3d spatial environment, trying to push lead toward targets moving in 3d space, in 2d distance is difficult to judge, try tossing a ball of paper into a bin with one eye closed it is not as easy as doing it with both eyes open, that is what VR does for simulation.
HagarTheHorrible Posted September 18, 2014 Author Posted September 18, 2014 it will make all the difference in the world, we are simulating a 3d spatial environment, trying to push lead toward targets moving in 3d space, in 2d distance is difficult to judge, try tossing a ball of paper into a bin with one eye closed it is not as easy as doing it with both eyes open, that is what VR does for simulation. Will that make deflection shooting more, or less, challenging ? One of the difficulties that fighter pilots had to overcome was assessing range and deflection, whether it's opportunity and practice this seems to be less challenging in flight sims than suggested by actual fighter pilots in real life. I just wonder if adding depth perception will change this to any degree ?
DD_bongodriver Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 Well, because the current DK2 is resolution limited it is not something I have been able to test properly.....that and the fact most of the time I'm just drinking in the incredible sensation of actually being in the cockpit and just dicking about doing aero's (in DCS), but I did have a little practice at strafing, the difference it made for me was night and day.
LLv34_Flanker Posted September 21, 2014 Posted September 21, 2014 S! Properly done and VR will be the next thing in flight simming. I am really waiting for worthy VR equipment to come, OR in mind as it seems devs have it too
VR-DriftaholiC Posted September 21, 2014 Posted September 21, 2014 Why is there a rift/vr thread in every sub forum?
