I'm seriously considering about buy G-sync monitor. (PG278Q).

Is it worth buying? Is this effective in BOS as well?

If you still have the R9 290X in your sig, then no a G-Sync monitor would not be worth buying.  G-Sync only works with Nvidia cards.  You can wait a few months to see whaty comes out in the freesync flavour if you plan to keep the R9 290X.

Hi Imur6, I am condsidering the Asus 27 ROG monitor. I have an Nvidia Video card so its no problem.

I notice in your Sig you are running a 290x. I don't think(someone correct me if im wrong)  AMD Cards work with G-Sync. At the moment if you want to buy a G-Sync Monitor, you must have an Nvidia Card that supports G-Sync .Don't spend your money yet or you may have to pay for a new video card as well.

Thanks for reminding. I plan to go to Nvidia ;)

Anyone considered TVs?  Was going to use a 42" for flight sims.

I use a 40" Toshiba TV for my monitor. Like it quite a bit.

I have it and its awesome! Well worth the money. But i would consider if upgrading my other componernts will possibly bring more since the monitor is really not cheap. So if you already have a very good rig then go for it. If your rig is mediocre your probably better off upgrading /Graphicscars/CPU/RAM.

Checked out the GSync monitor. 27" 2560x1440 144Hz Asus ROG GSync monitor 850€ and then a nVidia GTX780Ti for like 700€. No thanks. I am happy with my 24" 121Hz screen and 290X ;)

After a quick price check on stores I would need to invest anything from 500 to 1000€ just to get GSync. No thanks. My current 121Hz screen and 290X won't even cost as much as the GSync screen alone, the Asus ROG "Swift". Will see what the VESA's FreeSync will do. At least does not need propertiary hardware ;)

I use a 40" Visio and have no complaints.  It replaced a 30" Dell monitor.  I chose it because of the low input lag: http://www.displaylag.com/display-database/

At some point I will upgrade to a 4K TV, but I don't think the technology is quite there yet.

Don't judge G-sync till you see it trust me its amazing  ;)

I have one. Totally fantastic. Looks like a special graphics update for BOS and ROF.

I waited a while for Asus ROG Swift G-Sync monitor to finally go on sale. I bought it even after the price in Europe really shocked me, it costed me all together 900 euro. I was excited for it to arrive , especially after reading positive opinions on forum.

When it arrived I sat down to testing and was immediately disappointed with quality of the panel. This is not a problem of G-Sync technology which worked great , although having Gtx 780 Ti graphics card I was getting pretty smooth gameplay with v-sync anyway. The difference wasn't really that mind-blowing.

After two days of testing , using RoF , BoS and Clod I decided to return the monitor. G-Sync worked great ,especially in RoF , but the overall loss of graphics quality because of TN panel was not acceptable for the price I paid.

My previous and current monitor is a Korean 27 inch 2560*1440 S-IPS on LG panel , gloss . Same panels were used in Apple high-end pricy monitors. I have it over a year now , bought it for less than half the price of Asus RoG. If I could upgrade it with a G-Sync panel I would but I won't exchange it's great colours and picture quality for a TN panel , no matter how fast or smooth.

What was really a killer for me was matte finish on Asus RoG monitor , after using a gloss panel monitor for over a year I couldn't stand that matte antireflective layer. It was making BoS looking worse in my eyes. Between me wearing glasses , BoS forced SSAO , and Asus RoG washed-out colours and matte finish which actually distorts picture , it all looked bleak and lacklustre.

This is my personal and subjective opinion on Asus RoG monitor, although G-Sync is great , the overall package is not worth 900 euro. Especially when a sub 400$ Korean monitor has a better picture quality and 780 Ti gives me smooth gameplay most of the time.

Bring on 4K IPS gloss panel monitors with G-Sync , and hopefully cheaper when freesync is released. Till then I will stick to my Korean.

Did anybody move from a 144 Hz to a G-sync and notice any difference that justifies the 100-200% higher price?

There is not that many 1440p 144hz monitors out there. I know some people getting their Korean panels overclocked to such speeds.

Posted

I also use a 2560x1440p korean monitor. Overclocks to 110hz. Best thing i ever bought. IPS screens are sooooo much better than your standard TN panel.

All current G-Sync monitors use TN screens. Id suggest a Qnix 2710 korean monitor approx £250 inc shipping. And Nvidias soon to be released GTX 980..priced hopefully around the £400 mark.

I think all of the G-sync monitor use TN panel as this panel has great response time (1~2 ms) which is very important to game.

But every panel have merits and demerits anyway

No problem Imur, just to clarify , I am not trying to bash Asus RoG monitor , it's not a bad package overall but the price is way too much for a TN panel.

I understand that there are no IPS panel monitors with G-Sync , and TN panels are faster but if you used IPS panel you will be disappointed with TN image quality.

Maybe after using Asus monitor for a month I would get use to washed colours and matte finish , but why would I pay 900 euro just to get smoother experience.

My current monitor has response time of 6ms and I don't think it makes me less competitive player in BoS or RoF , I don't notice any blur on my monitor anyway.

G-Sync itself is a great idea but I believe it is grossly overpriced because it has no competition yet. Let's wait for freesync technology to arrive and see if it brings the price of G-Sync down.

Don Kojote. Interested in the FreeSync as it is a standardized thing by VESA, not a propertiary thing like GSync is at the moment.

Competition is always good for bringing the price down , and when Freesync is free :) , how will Nvidia react? Will they block adaptive sync in their GPU's to tie you to G-Sync , or drop down the price of G-Sync kits?

I can see on Scan UK that the price of Asus RoG went down by £32 already.

If you have no problem with TN panels , and really want to get the benefits of G-Sync I would recommend this 4K Acer monitor.

At £500 it's actually cheaper than non G-Sync 4K Asus

I never had any Acer monitors so can't comment on the quality , but at this price a 4K monitor with G-Sync is a steal.

G-Sync will make your 35-40 fps look like solid 60 on V-Sync. Graphics cards like 780 Ti should be able to run most games smooth in that resolution thanks to G-Sync.

It's one of those things that is best wait to see how it pans out. Sounds great on paper and initial announcement, and then as it progresses it becomes less than what it should have been. Happens all the time with tech, so I always wait until an actual tech release is out and people can review it. Gsync is at least out in hands and so many are saying its great. I have found that there are issues with SLI, and then there aren't issues with SLI - so that could be end user config, I hope, but I still ordered one. Now, if my order would just be fulfilled. Now it looks like early October at the earlies and this is a tech that has already been released (you could upgrade a 24" Asus a year ago using a Gsync module) so this isn't just a new release of a new tech, just seems to be a lack of production. On the other hand, Freesync is still way preview - so buying into anything they say is just setting up for disappointment.

I didn't believe anything Gsync until it was actually reviewed and tested - and end users actually purchased and had them in hand, then I ordered - or pre-ordered. I truly don't understand why some hype a literally unproven product when it hasn't even made it beyond tech sheets and perhaps some internal testing.

Some great posts there Don. I am going to hold off on the new monitor for the moment.

With my Rig  I can run all my Sims  "maxed out" so I am happy. The only reason (for me) to spend money, would be to improve the Eye candy.

But I have a question about some of the posts Ive seen. What is the max Resolution that BOS supports ?

Not much point in buying a Hi Res monitor if I cant fly BOS. ~S~

FuriousMeow. GSync works ONLY on nVidia, FreeSync on both brands. There can be differences within both brands which models will support it, but the bottom line still holds that FreeSync is not tied to one manufacturer only.

Posted

Also which monitors do support freesync? As far as I know, AMD said that a monitor firmware update is needed, but there are no monitors with firmware update option. So freesync may be a welcome competiton once it's available but it may still require spending on a new monitor too. When this freesync technology will be widely supported then there will be no other option for NVidia than to adopt too. If and only if it's really as easy as AMD says.

Regarding g-sync and the PG278Q ASUS monitor: the primary reason to buy a g-sync monitor is stutter free gameplay and smooth movement perception. To achieve that one wants to get rid of lag of any type. Even gtg time matters. PG278Q's 1ms gtg and 144Hz @ 2560x1440 is an amasing feature from this point of view. Comparable ISP monitor would probably have 6 - 8ms gtg and is there any running at 144Hz? Maybe one day there will be a solution without compromises. One has to make a choice between picture quality a smoothness as it is today.

So where is this amazing freesync tech then is it out ?

They talk a lot about support for AMD cards. Also my sources all indicate only the latest AMD GPUs. Additionally, the technology won't be seen until later this year for technology demo at the earlist and the availability in monitors not until next year. It is also reliant on DisplayPort 1.2a, which if your card doesn't have one - it won't work with it.

So it goes back to, this isn't available across all GPUs. It isn't proven, as it hasn't been technologically demoed, and it looks to be AMD only at this point in time. Freesync is currently nothing more than a WhitePaper release.

Wrong. Has been demoed on current hardware. Do your homework ;) http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/freesync-faq.aspx  Newish FAQ released, could be more detailed but has info.

Wrong? It has been demoed on current hardware? Where? Because everything I have found has been no where, and it'll be later.

If you are here to just be pro-AMD, and pro FreeSync (apparently just putting Free in there gets everyone to get all giddy), then say that because I'm not here to be pro-nVidia or Gsync, but all you are doing is definitely just promoting a WhitePaper. That is it. You have zero hard factual information, just a FAQ (wow!) and a WhitePaper release.

And your video card needs DisplayPort 1.2a to even hopefully work with this non-demoed tech which is still stated to be only certain R9s and maybe a couple of cards for the 77xx series.

It costs too much for a little improvement. I'm happy with V-sync. Maybe I'll buy G-sync monitor when the price drops a lot.

As said FM, do your homework. Took me like 10 seconds to find a video ;)

No, not promoting AMD, I use whatever hardware brings be best bang for the buck. And at the moment nVidia's GSync + a GTX card is not that. Simple as that. The new 980GTX looks tempting though.
Posted (edited)

I did look and there were no tech samples until later this year for review. I didn't buy into nVidia's GSync when they demoed the product themselves, I waited until it could be reviewed. That is not a tech demo, that is just an AMD (again - AMD) spokesperson at a booth. Clearly you didn't click on the link I provided way back at the beginning.
