Flight in a Catalina

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Hello all,

Today I was able to take a flight in the Catalina PH-PBY from Lelystad airport. A great but somewhat deafening experience

This particular Cat was build in 1941 and has quite a warrecord, destroying three U-boots and damaging a fourth!

Here some pics and a clip that I made.

Kewl, How fast did that beast cruise? 80-90 knots?

Would be the ultimate recreation vehicle, with a galley, bunks and refrigerator full of Bavarian Beer...

That looks fantastic. Lucky you!

You'd even have time to sober up before you landed.

S!

Awesome :) I remember as a kid watching Jacques Cousteau TV-series where he flew around in his white Catalina and the boat was an old Royal Navy mine sweeper.

It flew just under 200 Km/h (landing speed being 130 if I recall correctly).

We made two splash and go's and total flight time was little over 90 mins. Man those two radials make a nice sound :)

The former military airfield of Soesterberg. Worked there 10 years ago. The black square building is the

new military museum due to open next month!

@Heliopause:

I see Marken which means you also flew over Volendam.

Wasn't it possible to drop some bombs on it? Saves us Dutchmen from terrible music.

You guys could have been heroes for the rest of the nation.
