Hi guys, hi developers,

I thought about anything after my last session and after I saw the official trailer on the page.

Wouldn't it be great if there is a possibility to turn on/off an pilot (in the options) while sitting in the cockpit? In my opinion it would be fantastic to see hands on the stick and foot  moving like I do!!!
Is it possible to create this or is it planned?

Greetings!

Hi there.

Glad you are enjoying it. This is an issue that has been much debated. Some like it, some don't. Some say it blocks your view of instruments.

That's honestly about all there is say on the matter.

Ooh, maybe this as well - It should be an "option".

I'd quite like it.

Yes, there should be an option! In expert mode I really understand if people can't look at every instrument but need them to fight but in normal mode it should be possible to turn on/off the plot in cockpit because hands on the stick really looks great and makes it more realistic!

Not going to happen. It's a dead issue.

This is why there shouldn't be pilots in the sim... the FOV is such so you can see your own surroundings but when you look back what do you see in the seat? It doesn't work.

wait. if there's a ghost pilot, we should have the option of ghost plane. like wonder woman view. And people can't see the plane because its invisible but they can see the pilot though. so if one were to go ghost pilot and ghost plane, we'd have trouble, especially if its a mosquito and there's your UFO. Wait that's fake, real UFO is the flying pancake.

:D

j/k.

I think the extra animation up close would take time (to implement) , but I'd like the option. So like if its a girl pilot and she gets grazed in the head, depending if you chose to have her with luxurious long locks or curls or 1920's ish bobs . . . the long hair ladies would get stuff all over the 'pit.

Ah well, options  .. .  moar the bettar

I find it kind of an immersion breaker to be honest, I already have 2 arms and legs which are working my physical controls, why are they up on screen again?

this is only a bad implementation i thought. It's possible and should be an option ... so that everyone can choose!

Your virtual eyes in a flight sim are set back like they're on the back of your head. So you can have a wide enough FOV to see the cockpit. When you look back you see your own seat. If there was a body you'd see yourself.

That's my opinion as well. A pilot in the pit would be redundant and illogical in my mind. Frankly, if it means delaying the release or add-ons I hope they never take the time to do it. To me it's just not necessary.

I thought it looked relatively nice here, on console. And there's POV vibration.

that's a pre-animated scene, where you press no button on the cockpit, but the mouse button.

it is nice yes, it is practical nope

Please Gents.
Think again. I´m a O.R. DK1 owner and what I mean is that when you are using this gadget you dont see anything but the cockpit. No screen borders, no wall behind the screen, no picture of your beauties or the beer cane on your desktop, just a cockpit. And... wait a moment. I´m inside a cockpit but I can´t see my legs? I can feel how I push the rudder , see how the virtual rudder moves but no foot pushing it? Am I a ghost? Wow that's a strange feeling!
Sorry to say this, but in War Thunder there is a pilot in cockpit and is very nice to see how the hand of the virtual pilot moves the throttle at the same time you moves the physical controller. Also true that you have to put your controls in the same place as in the cockpit to dont get confused.

Hope you understand what I mean.

Saludos Costa

I'm surprised this topic gets such attention. Isn't it obvious that in a flight sim the pilot body would block your view of the instruments and controls? Everything on the left side console would get hidden. The developer didn't work on animated controls so they could then hide them with a figure in the cockpit.

With a visual pilot in cockpit view you cant turn around and move your head as much or else you will see a body with a chopped head. Works best as it is.

Hey Potenz. Yeah, I'm aware the video is 'pre-animated'. The point was to show that console games, even ones from two years ago, have elements in them that flight sims are still struggling with. The 'phantom flare gun hand' in BoS goes invisible when viewed in front of the gauges. I don't see why a more sophisticated system wouldn't work for a whole pilot's body. Look at Star Citizen or Elite too. They're both supposed to have full characters that can leave their crafts!

Flight sims aren't "struggling" with this issue. It's just not something to implement in this genre for obvious reasons.

You know Battlefield 3's budget was like $45 million, right?

I'd like it, and don't think the arguments make any sense. Block your view? What? Look around. That's what 6dof is for. When I'm in a real plane and look down, I see my arms, legs and body. Why would I want anything different in a sim? I also don't understand why people would argue against it - don't like it? don't use it; make it an option.

No, we can't have a pilot because then people will be arguing about what type of uniform they're wearing and want a menu where you can select different hats and life jackets...

I was joking Luke.

I hadn't even thought of that. Players love customization. I think pilot skins would only help the genre.

Thing is, in that Battlefield video (scripted or not)you see everything from a pilot's body, a pilot putting on his helmet, sound change when the helmet is on, immersive radio comms and sounds, depth of field(water droplets), POV shake(on take off), and ground crew; just to name a few. Sure, Dice has a relatively gigantic budget and I understand things take money. But I can't imagine it would cost anywhere near 45 million to have these 'elements' in Flight Sims. And how do you guys think Flight Sims will last if they don't stay competitive against such things?

If you're new to flight sims, you might not understand the need to see controls in the cockpit vs games like Battlefield and War Thunder.

Here's some more screenshots, yes these are from an actual flight sim, which makes it puzzling they included this feature. Even more so because this cockpit is all clickable. I think this is the only plane in DCS that has this, there's a "game mode" but even then you need to be able to see these.

You can see on the left side nearly everything is obscured. The fuel gauges are on the floor and they're obscured also. In BoS for example the 190 has it's flap settings, landing gear and trim which would be blocked.

Sure the player can switch this on and off, but why waste time developing a feature so the player can just switch if off 90% of the time?

That was a dig at Cliffs of Dover... ;)

In perhaps the greatest example of scope creep ever in a flight sim, it has a menu where you can select your uniform and hat and type of life vest and jacket...

Rise of Flight features different outfits for the crew but you don't choose them. You can pick your scarf color though!

a virtual body will only be a devs priority when the technology of VR will allow us to use our hands in it

till then 99% of the users are plying through a monitor with head tracking that give a limited 6dof.

and Dice isn't the best company to bring into dvelopment priorities

Sharpe sorry but you are the best. Showing us screenshots of exactly what we discuss about! xD ... there should be an option to turn on/off! Not more! The nerds can hide it "to see their unclickable instruments" and the other guys which play normal and use only their joystick-buttons can turn it on! Don't know where's the problem with an option if it doesn't delays the release! ...

It would delay the release, and besides that, the team has decidedly said it's a feature they have no interest in implementing. It's a dead issue.
