New HUD - merged thread

Can we have the old HUD back in its ubobtrusive corner please. I dont like the new one nor its position at all.

what??? hell no. The new HUD is PERFECT. Why? because it has the 3 main things you need:

1. air speed

2. compass heading

3. Altitude

the previous one didn't have the compass heading so I had to constantly open up the little map.

Adding the throttle % is optional however it doesn't take much to look at your actual throttle ingame or your HOTAS (assuming you have one).

Seeing throttle, mixture and radiator percentages in the HUD is very helpful as a teaching and confirmation tool when verifying your controls setup.

You want to be better in BoS ? well fly RoF it will improve your BoS skills  ;)

Been flying RoF since inception, also flown aerobatics in real life for many years - still found the previous HUD useful.

what did the old one have which the new one doesn't? who knows...maybe the devs can incorporate both. I certainly want the compass heading in there as its critical when trying to navigate on expert servers

The only thing I'm missing is the throttle percentage. You may say... well your HOTAS will tell you that. And I agree except that in Normal mode the aircraft throttle back to protect the engine (i.e. the Bf109F-4) and I'd like to know where my throttle is actually at percentage wise.

Otherwise I like the new improvements to the HUD. Although I wouldn't mind it in the left corner rather than center. It gets in my way a bit being there. I'd love a toggle to move it around too.

If any of you fly Rise of Flight, I think they have it perfect.  The HUD is in fact little gauges that can be dragged anywhere you want them, so it is in keeping with the flight era (not spaceship symbology), AND the HUD is separate from the MAP!  Think about that, both do not have to be called up at the same time!

BTW, the BoS map has always been poor, non-adjustable other than 2 sizes (to my knowledge, but correct me...) but now it is useless.

I noticed this last night no map without hud and the map is as good as usless, I couldnt find a way to zoom in or adjust it, not sure what was wrong with the way it was done in ROF?

Man, some good options have been listed so far. I prefer the old HUD, but give me throttle % and the ability to at least move the new HUD around and I'm a happy camper (sic).

Thanks again guys!

I totally agree with you. Take the concept of RoF (movement dials, functionality), it would just change the style dials for it resembles more dials of World War II.

Good suggestion

Have toggle, old, new and the 3rd one that's going to replace the first two . .. and also ability to adjust it to where you want.

And experten mode have a experten-leicht that has the HUD, but if it was up to me I'd prefer experten not to have any HUD.

But more options is better.

I miss the info on the radiator settings ...

The compass with the wind indication is also good to have.

The new aircraft icons, fuzzy with the increasing distance are also great in the non-expert servers !!!

Hi all. First I must say I don like it. It obstructs my view at important instruments. Instead of Lookin down with my eyes,I have to look down with my Head to get it out of the way. But I can live with it now that I have all my controls mapped out in BOS.

The Old Hud was really helpful when mapping all the different controls in cockpit.. Water Rad etc.

It doesn't really matter for Guys that have been flyin Bos for a While but for New flyers to BOS,the Old HUD helps with the Learnin Curve for CEM. ~S~

I like the new one, and didn't find it to obstruct my view.

I like the compass rose with the wind vector indication - precious!

I miss, in that I am with the OP, the water / oil rad indications.

But I wouldn't mind if it was moved to one of the lower corners of the screen, although I actually find it more useful exactly where it is now.

Do we really need 3 topics in the General Discussion forum all discussing the same thing?

The new HUD seems fine to me. Will there be a wonder woman view option for the completely new players and servers?

Sorry Luke. I should have asked You  for YOUR approval before I decided to pose this question on the new hud.

It's unnecessary to have 3 discussions about the exact same thing in the exact same forum.

Your poor attempt at sarcasm has been noted. ;)

There is a new HUD? I am not using it so sorry but I did not know of it! :(

I prefer being able to move it around, or at the very least have it pinned to the left.  Putting it in the middle was not a good idea.

As a full switcher the hud isn't important for me, but I would say that the old hud gave some information that the new one does not, information which is important for a newcomer.

The actual layout and placement I have no opinion about

Posted

I think the criteria for waht to show in hud is: vital info you can read by touch an vital info you can read bu rolling eyes( not pressing a button. Trottle, mixture an prop pitch are vital and you can read by touch, so shoud be in hud. Speed, altitude, rpm and heading too. We dont need Wind speed or home heading. I like the expandable hud Idea great, when you expand when you want, but you may keep the vital short and clear also. This new center hud is awfull and a stepback

Posted

Lets wait and see the new hud in detail the next weeks. They stated that is only WIP. I guess that all the missing information in relation with the "older" hud will be implemented.

I feel the HUD should not be inside of a rectangle or any shape, just the fonts and numbers visible. I liked the HUD in the left corner, it was less in your face. I know you can turn it off but in MP it disables the chat interface, etc.

I hope the devs will add position selection for the HUD in the final version or a key bind that just turn the HUD off for those with track IR devices.

Both have merit but I would like to see this perhaps available selectively for NEW pilots. The Expanded one, then The smaller one, then none, i.e. read the gages. This would also help those with poor eye sight. Which with one of my eyes going bad (hope to get it fixed) is not a bad thing.

Why do we have to have one or the other? Why not have the option of adding any of the relevant information you want to a HUD?

A submenu in options to configure the HUD to your own personal preference and display the information you want would be fantastic.

I personal would want all the information I could get on there. More than we used to have in fact. And its kind of frustrating as this game currently lacks the announcements the old IL2 had. You never get overheat warnings or percentages for anything you are adjusting or damage reports.

Surly adding a configurable HUD is not so hard to develop? Then everyone's happy.

Chalk me up as one of those guys who would have preferred a RoF style HUD.  Being able to place the gauges was fantastic...and I'd even like to see an option to turn on/off certain gauges.  As it stands now the new one doesn't appeal to me.

If we're not doing the RoF model I think I'd like the following:

Two boxes, one in each corner (size of the previous HUD or slightly smaller).

Left Box: speed, altitude, heading

Right Box: mixture, fuel, radiator etc.

Then simply have a HUD-Mode button.  Left Box, Both Boxes, or No Boxes.  This way normal players can use the left box, expert or more serious players can use both, or you can turn them off.  Simple, easy, and out of the way.  I don't like having the box in the center, personally.

I switched it off, I actally look at the planes instruments if I want to know what's going on. And with the X-55 Rhino stick I also can see the radiator positions because of the sliders on the throttle. But that's just me. Indeed, the old HUD was better for the F4, 80% Throttle == 1.3 ATA. Now I have to listen to the engine or take a lokk to the Instrument. That's the only information that's worth the HUD for me.

I find the idea of huge floating gauges a la RoF was a big immersion killer if using them...a small digital box in a corner does not bother in the same way.. and if you can turn it off independently all the better. With the limited instrumentation in WWI I could see the use for them but not for WWII A/C and no matter how beautifully the dials are done having them "floating" there just would look odd.

If there was a "wonder woman" view for beginners then it would maybe make sense. If you can move the current (with additions) box to corners or centre and turn it off independently  it is perfect compromise.

I find the information of the current HUD (heading, airspeed, altitude and also remaining bombs) not to be of much value except for heading only because in Russian aircraft seeing the compass is not the easiest.  In most cases, the information you seek is readily displayed on the instrument panel.  In other cases, mostly on Russian aircraft, it is not.  For example, radiator settings, mixture setting, prop pitch, supercharger, boost.

IMO I think there should be three HUD settings.  It must be remembered that not everyone flies MP, therefore there should be HUD modes available with more information for the more occasional player.

All modes would be selectable by either the user in SP or by the Server Admin in MP.

1. Off

2. Heading, airspeed, altitude

3. Heading, airspeed, altitude, radiator settings, mixture setting, prop pitch, supercharger, boost, temps

The main reason I have been against the use of a HUD in MP is that if your instruments get shot out in flight you should not be able to turn on a HUD and get the very same information.  Therefore i would go a step further with HUD modes 2 & 3.  Any instrument disabled in the cockpit would no longer reflect information in the HUD.

The controls related to complex engine management would be more helpful on the HUD than the current display.  Some of these controls do not have a instrument dial in the cockpit.  Some are controlled by wheels that don't have an easy way to see what the current setting is.

As far as location of the HUD, I think it should be draggable,  Other than that put it back in the corner.

There is one other option, which I believe gives the utmost flexibility to both SP and MP.  It is late in the day for this to be incorporated however.  Within the Settings menu have a page for the HUD, similar to the Realism Custom controls, where the available HUD information can be toggled on or off by the user for SP or the Server Admin for MP and that information is what will appear in the HUD.

What am I missing here with the new HUD?

That ? is the waypoint/target area you're supposed to fly to. I think.

The expandable hud is great, i would set like this:

1 off

2 Speed, altitude, Heading (and maybe throttle %)

3 Speed, Altitude, Heading, Prop Pitch, Mixture, Fuel

The other thinks like radiators, gear, flaps, engine selection, wep, supercharger......just in a event updade, like a message showing just when you are changing them. And please no blinking and shining like the old il2

And no all % of radiator and flaps.....10%, 20%, 30% are fine.

All of them small and with thin fonts, not with this mp3 style

And in the corner, not this ugly middle style

The good thing about this updated UI is i did not liked in the midle and disabled for good and using instruments, much more fun

I don't see the point of using this new HUD. Not only does it cover up the instruments that someone should be using, but it looks so War Thunderish.

Ditch it, and put lever positions in, so people actually use the cockpit gauges, and not some sci-fi magic hud in a sim.

No, they show liters. The USSR was using the metric system by this time.

I wasn't 100 % sure myself. I knew the Russians worked in metric, but there could (and that's a big IF) have been instances where they used lend-leased parts. Highly unlikely if you ask me, but whatever... it didn't make perfect sense in my head either. 80 imp gal TOTAL would make sense from a mathematical point of view, but by the behaviour you guys described it looks like the fuel gauge indicate the LAST 80 liters for each wing, which is a plausible explanation too.
