The good and "could be better"

Already voiced my opinion regarding engine sounds and I think the La-5 is by far the worst one in BoS. Somehow reminds me of my SE-5 when starting up and keeping RPM under 1500

Seriously, I think BoS sounds are not bad. The last update brought some good enhancements to the starter sounds, which especially made the 109s sound more authentical with their typical magneto sqreech sound.

At idle - apart from La-5 :P - engines sound great to me. They have bass, they've depth to them and are clearly different. At mid to high power setting though they are not nessecarily "flat", but lack both, bass and depth.

Now I don't knwo how WW2 earprotectors worked, but when wearing a modern headset you hear the bass and lower frequenzy noise of the engien clearly over the high pitch ones. This is lacking in BoS as well as numerous other flight sims currently.

Gun sounds are ok in my opinion. They do the job and are probably too loud within the cockpit, but apart from that they're not totally unauthentic to me (I'm no gun nerd obvisouly and don't know how MG151 sound in reality :P ).

My advice to the OP is to go into your Sound Driver settings and modifying your Equalizer. This is what I use for BoS (and other flight sims):

Those settings add more bass and low pitch noise to the engine making them sound closer to real ones, though it can't completely make up for high pitch engine sounds (cought La-5 cought).

Edit: I'm using a Stereo setup + sub btw.

Making a realistic gun sound is a very hard thing to do.

Some FPS games using real sounds according to developers, but it isn't anywhere close to what you hear in real life.

Original engine sounds are for most part copyrighted.Same as some planes can not be done in simulators due to copyright issues (unfamous "Avenger case" in old Il2) So you cant just download them and use them in your commercial product to earn money without paying license to original owner.No-go for devs.More safe way is to sample all sounds from scratch. And that is really difficult and requires professional sound studio to perform at top notch level.

So with resources they have at their disposal I say sounds are very good and I like them. When flying I use Headphones.Usually I have to tone down the sound quite a bit as it is too loud and overwhelming for my ears.

And as always, this is as subjective feeling as it can be.

I have said it before, my settings are spot on. Its not the settings or control of the audio, its the sounds going into it.  Its hard to describe a sound, but a WWII fighter doing a flyby in BoS sounds more like a WWI fighter doing a flyby is probably the best way to describe it. Even in the cockpit the sound of a 109 feels like a lawnmover Vs. a V8 to me. Personal opinion of course.

The "growl" and the "bite" of a DB600 series engine, doesnt seem to be there, as it is in other IL2's games. When you have 4 109's flying close the sound is flat. I think I am spoiled by previous versions. I can accept that. I am still going to push more more improvements in the areas I think can be better. Nothing but good can come from feedback, IMO.

Even if people are santisfied with the sounds and can live with them, does that mean BoS should not strive to better them? Would it not be a goal to have BoS be the standard instead of "its ok"? I think so.

Don't want to sound like an d*ck DB601 & DB605 witch are used in F-4 and G-2 is V12 engines.

Does anyone know if the sound master for BoS is the same person who redid the sounds for CoD (Valery Kornilov)?

Yes, he is. He was loaned out by 777 to fix CloD's sound problems back in the day.

That's what I thought.  So the same guy responsible for the really great sounds in CoD is also responsible for the mediocre sounds in BoS.  Or the sound quality is very similar and some people just hear what they want to hear.

Yes, I know the DB600 series are V12. I was comparing a lawmower engine to a V8 engine as far as sounds go.

I agree on that, improvements in any way are very welcome. I've actually posted well hidden critizism (cought) regarding current sounds and my "advice" was to just get the best out of what we have currently, not that things should stay. There's no need to be pissed.

Pissed? How in the world did you come to the conclusion I am upset about what you wrote? I am not.

If you read back a bit you can see people writing the exact same thing about messing with EQ settings.
