6./ZG26_Klaus_Mann Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Will there ever be a free Demo Version, basically including free starter aircraft for each nation, full multiplayer and 1 or 2 missions? The Lagg-3 and Bf109 F-4 would be perfect for that purpose. Or even a Bf110 (if it is ever introduced) and Pe.2. Or the Stuka and Il-2 even. Also, will Founders (people who payed 94.99) get all modifications for free once the game goes live?
AndyJWest Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 No, no free version. And the developers have already made it clear that they aren't going to be selling 'modifications'. 1
Finkeren Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 We should never say never. But let's get the sim out of the door first, before even discussing something like this. It took over a year for RoF to become F2P.
Vaxxtx Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Couldnt care less for a free game, but a demo would be awesome. Is that in the works?
II/JG17_HerrMurf Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 I wouldn't expect either for a least a couple of years. Did ROF have a free or demo from the outset? Nonetheless, as stated several times elsewhere, it is a different business model for BOS.
SYN_Mike77 Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 I bought RoF less than a year after release. You could download a two plane free demo that would expire in two weeks. I think it lasted about 2 hours on my hard drive before I bought the full (4 plnaes!) game. Followed shortly by my first plane packs.
AceRevo Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Couldnt care less for a free game, but a demo would be awesome. Is that in the works? Ive read somewhere, maybe a interview or FAQs that they may try to make a demo.. But dont think its amongst top priorities.
FlatSpinMan Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 I think i read somewhere that there may be a cheaper really basic pack with a plane or two some time.
SvAF/F19_Klunk Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 A free demo with a single plane flyable, e.g the Lagg, could maybe increase sales in the long run?
6./ZG26_Klaus_Mann Posted September 6, 2014 Author Posted September 6, 2014 A free demo with a single plane flyable, e.g the Lagg, could maybe increase sales in the long run? It should at least be one for each nation. Best would be a plane of average performance, the problem being that Germany is stuck with excellent airplanes. Both 109s would be completely overpowered when offered for free. Same for the 190. I think for a free version you would have to offer the Il-2 and Ju-87, maybe fitting the game title even better.
Rjel Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 I like free as much as anyone but sometimes you just have to plunk down the cash. If all anyone wants is a free look, there are boatloads of Youtube videos that should give anyone more than enough reason to decide one way or the other.

It's easier to attract people with a free demo.
6./ZG26_5tuka Posted September 7, 2014 Posted September 7, 2014 (edited) A free demo would be a perfect long term goal to keep new players getting interested in BoS and willing to give it a try without paying big bucks for a pig in a poke. I see no reason why this should be excluded from future BoS developments. Restricting it to single player only is probably not going to be a good idea in my opinion. Judging from the current SP content (maybe in addition to 1 campaing mission availabel for free demo) this would quickly bore demo pilots and prevent them from taking insight in the "big thing", the MP. A better approach would be to leave their limited SP access but in addition to a limited MP part. They should be limited to 1 plane (Lagg-3 would be best) without any special ordinance or upgrades to chose from, only fuel ammount. To go even further they oculd be restricted to join BoS servers only leaving dedicated servers locked but visible for teasing. Don't know if such a system could be implemented but it would add a perfect compromise in terms of accessabilit and insight into BoS to better encourage players to purchase the sim in my opinion. In terms of RoF I personally think it rly stands out as a perfect example of how it works well. I've eagerly started playing it with my Albatros and Spad to figure out how WW1 and the game fits me and have ended up with a pretty decent ammount of planes and great expiriences by now, including those as a free player. Bassly Posted September 7, 2014 Posted September 7, 2014 (edited) As far as I understood that free ROF didn't work well, so I'm sure free demo players would be just fine with couple simple SP missions to decide to buy or not to buy. Of course, if there ever will be a free demo. Edited September 7, 2014 by Bassly
6./ZG26_5tuka Posted September 7, 2014 Posted September 7, 2014 I think the reason why RoF might not have been working out well (depending on the perspective) is more due to the WW1 theme which overall enjoys far less interest in aviation of that period than WW2. Furthermore there are probably more guys trying to judge the "new IL-2" by the MP part than a few SP missions (or quick mission builder). It may be too revealing to present a strongly restricted MP to free players but I think it's a better way to get them interested. Only SP missions would probably do fine as well for getting started with the flight physics and the overall flair of Stalingrad. It's just my 2 cents of how I feel it working better in terms of teasing and cashing people .
