  1. 1. Do You prefer the graphical presets over tweakability?

    • Yes! I can see the great wisdom behind them.

    • No! A bad idea is a bad idea, no matter how you put it.

    • Maybe. Give us some advanced options to tinker with.

S!

As many of you know the graphical presets devs decided to give us have raised some discussion. Now after they have been active for some time during Early Access it would be nice to see how community sees them, are they the root of evil or an brilliant idea. Maybe got some ideas to throw in?

I say Maybe. Keep them if we get at least some options to choose from, for example as Advanced settings. RoF has a nice setup, why not use similar in BoS?

With desktops, and laptops having such a wide configurable range, it makes complete sense to add a whole list of options to tweak. Add a preset slider with 7 points to give a starting base and allow custom from there.

I wont go into the 'custom stuff', but the graphical slider presets should be something like...

Minimal - Very low - Low- Medium - High - Very High - Ultra

From there you can find a good base and tweak accordingly.

Just my two twenty mils...

I´d prefer if there were advanced options in addition.

So anyone could customize the settings to personal preferences or just use a preset.

Maybe score modifier x0 if we use the "custom" option. :D

i can live with lower poly count, the not so great lightning and the somewhat pixelated shadows of balanced mode, BUT i realllllllly need to improve the visibility range! ITs impossible to navigate when the terrain 4km way is just a white low-res texture!

Well, their reasoning for these presets-only was, that they received too many questions/complaints from people who couldn't figure out all the settings (graphic settings only, all those key bindings seem to have been self explanatory though).

Some ways to avoid that:

A "custom settings" button and after clicking that, a notification would show up (like that early access reminder that shows up after each update for instance or the "your HUD is hidden" pop up) which would state that custom settings are not supported.

Or the possibilty to edit the Startup.cfg and unlock custom settings by changing a line (for instance "custom_graphics=0" to "custom_graphics=1").

As it stands now, BoS has the least customizable graphic settings i can remember of all the titles i played in this century (including lots of console ports) and for a relatively complicated software like a flightsim, this is not understandable for me.

I would like to see same customization scale as is available for RoF.As for me,the most important is visibility/draw distance (forests, buildings, ground objects in general) and turn off all that fancy SSAO,HDR or whatever it is :salute:

I like to tinker with graphic options on my own. At the very least the post-processing stuff, like SSAO, FoD, AA, etc

Some people don't have top computers and would like to sacrifice texture or effects quality for terrain view distance, for instance. Matt's custom button suggestion seems reasonable to me.

The only thing I dislike about using presets is inability to turn off SSAO. It's an FPS killer and I don't like its effect on the visuals. An option to turn it on/off like we can with Vsync and anti-aliasing would be great.

I agree. I can live with presets but I am really disappointed that I can't turn off SSAO. It's a horrible effect that doesn't add anything in my opinion, only makes BoS look worse. Why are forced to use it. Give us choice, don't restrict us , so we can enjoy the game the way we like it.

I'd rather have everything customizeable, but maybe both options could work well together.

There are certain graphic settings that kill my FPS terribly in MP while my GPU can handle other things pretty well at max (texture quality, anisotopy filtering, ect). Choosing a preset and than tinkering with it's graphic settings would be all right in my opinion given thta nobody can turn off or tinker with essential visuals like clouds and particles to gain advantage over other players.

As it is now I have to live with a slight sacrifise of what my game looks like to ensure my GPU runs everything smoothly. SweetFX adds slight freedom of adjustments, but to a limited extent.

@Requiem - you are close with the devs so its time for acting....let us have an option to turn off ssao.....jihaaaa

If it were up to me I'd design the graphics options like the difficulty options.
I.e. Low, Medium, High, Ultra and Custom. In custom you can then change landscape detail, texture and lighting detail etc.

Imho, just adding a SSAO on/off toggle would make no sense.

It would just leave one more option to wonder about for people who might need these presets (i welcome presets, unless you're forced to use them) and it would practically work against what they were trying to achieve with the presets, simplifying these settings for people who are not familiar with them.

Of course i would welcome the option to disable SSAO (and HDR and bloom), but they should really just add a fully customizable setting and not add this option to the presets.

Yes Matt but they told us presets will be in the final version and no custom settings so no hope there...so SSAO as resource hog and not so necessary feature should be as an option at least or in config file....

Out of a dozen solutions, they went for the worst one.

So this was a way to reduce problems? Congrats, they just got far worse, because it's not going to be "What settings are good for Y config? Okay, I'll try that.", it's going to be "Y config can't use X preset because Z is forced and there's nothing I can do, fix this devs!'. And they can't, because every time they tweak a preset someone else will either lose performance or lose graphical quality, and tadaa, even more pissed of people.

Ridiculous...

It's not that bad ...

Perhaps not for everyone, but since the presets I personally saw a massive loss in fps and performance, which is sad given how well RoF and the other IL2s run on my crate.

Also it's just simply unacceptable to not have graphics options in a PC game in 2014 in my honest opinion. I can maybe see the argument they made about "equal setting for all so that there's no exploits", but I don't see the "people dont know what they're doing" one, as I'm sure most of us know how to work with these sort of settings. Anyone who's played a couple of games on a PC should.

The presets themselves don't bother me, loads of games have those, what bothers me is that we're forced to use them. We really need an advanced tab or something next to the presets with all the options to toy around with.

I think if they keep the presets and add advanced custom settings the problem would go away. If you screw up too badly you can always click on a preset and undo your mistake!

Exactly Mike77. :salute:  Very simple and no IT professional's degree needed :) All in GUI, click and Apply. If not OK, then just choose a preset. Good to go again.

For the reason of testing in EA I can understand and follow the grafic presets for being able to hunt down bugs.

After Release I cant really follow the argument anymore.

Agreed. Again the way most games have it these days.

Thank god that it's not the CloD engine, where a medium-high mix-match looked and ran alot better than the lowest preset - then we'd be truly screwed.

This poll is misleading and getting the wrong results. Make it simple. What do you prefer? Presets or custom settings. That way you know exactly what people want if only can choose one.

Posted

There was a poll like that posted here before. Two options, presets or custom settings. It was modified by a mod to include a third option. That diluted the results a bit. for the few days the poll had only too options, it was pretty obvious, except two people, connected to the team, everyone would chose custom settings over presets.

Hello to all. Im new here. I just want to ask is there a chance we will get SSAO as an option some day? Squadmate who got this gameearlier said it was an option sometime in early beta stage and that SSAO has a huge impact on performance, specially on mid and mid end machines...

Dragon76, it all depends on devs if they want to make SSAO optional or not. I think most of the community would like to have it as a selectable option.
