I have a problem with gunner positions

So I bought this game about two days ago. I've been trying to play with a friend as a gunner, but neither of us can join the other one's plane. We tried fiddling with the "unlock gunner positions" option, but it doesn't seem to do anything. Is there something we have to do in order to make it work?
