I pre-ordered Topic Title book by Nikita Egorov and Boris Nechkin from Amazon.com for US $23.60 and expect to receive it around mid-February.

From Amazon's description: The first book to give a detailed description of the air war over Stalingrad including maps of all the airfields and unique details of specific air battles. The material has been sourced from the Russian archives and has never been published before. Both authors are based in the Russian Federation.

Salute Outlaw! You're welcome m8!  I got Red Phoenix Rising by Smithsonian Air & Space Museum historian Von Hardesty this summer.  You won't find a better overview of the history of the VVS (in English) in The Great Patriotic War IHMO.

That is a good book. It has a lot of pictures, map and charts.

Great, being shot down by an author is something I have always dreamt of. :D

No, actually that is pretty interesting. I hope he is a contributing member of the Russian BoS forum ;)

He is overwhelming busy, and is rare at forum. But his comments are brilliant.

Agreed. I just picked it up today and had a look through it. It's very detailed and picks up where Bergstrom left off with the series of Black Cross / Red Star series of books. I have the book on Kursk as well, which is also very good.

Luke, when did you get your CMB? I've been an EFMB badge holder since 1988.

I have been trying to convince myself that I need to pick up Vol 3 of Black Cross/Red Star. I have Vol 1 and 2.

Hi Tom,

I was awarded the CMB in the spring of 2005, after my unit (1st Infantry Div.) returned from Iraq. I never got the chance to try to qualify for the EFMB.

BC / RS Vol. 3 is very good and worth picking up, if you can find it for a good price.

guys, if someone have this interesting book, can he found some useful information about la-5 for us? namely, types/series of these planes in regiments mainly after oct.-nov.'42, or just serial numbers like 372109xx and above...

mainly after oct.-nov.'42, because i know serial numbers in regiments of 287 IAD, almost all planes of early series, max. 7 only in 13IAP in nov.'42...

well, we just can understand which planes flew in battle, only early series (before 9-10 series, according to official reference book) with weak performance or were and late series with better performance, which could appear after oct.-nov. in new regiments... if i'm not mistaken, in 42 was produced around 999 lagg-5/la-5, starting of production of late series it's approximately nov.-dec.'42...

and if shortly, in ideal it's around 520-530 kph at sl, 16 m/s at sl, 2x sec. of turntime, 32xx-33xx kg of weight - in RL first planes were bad quality, some had 2 DZ-40, i think and various incorrect/another radiator settings (but remember, in BoS will be winter), open canopy etc, it's why "slower then f-4/g2" - or 550/17-18/19-20/3220-3240 (+ better quality, several technical improvements for better handling etc) ie quite competitive with f-4/g-2 and fw 190 a-3...

personally my opinion, unfortunately, late series theoretically could be mainly in early 43 in some regiments, and even here i doubt - this is can be units in the rear... even Kojedub began his career in early 43 on 7 serie (sn 37210775) with high gargrot and 5 fuel tanks...

thanks in advance (i just not want to ask author, it's just idle curiosity)...

Did it ever get published? Amazon eventually cancelled my pre-order some years ago.
