it was quite a rugged engine, although nowhere near refined as their German counterpart. This engine belongs to a genuine Yak-1 restoration project, which is currently up for sale, although they want a tad too much money for that kind of aircraft...

Klimovs basically evolved from the Hispano-Suiza 12Y engine - hence the Motor-cannon possibility.

If I would want to be nasty, I would say its a French engine, built in Russia. ;)

At this time Hispano Suzia was not a french manufacturer, but as the name says a Spanish/Swiss, based in Barcelona. However many french aircrafts since WW 1 were equipped with H-S engines. Afaik in the sixties H-S was acquired by a French group. ;)

Yes it was....

There was 3 different Hispano-Suiza company. The first one was created in Barcelona in 1902 and bankrouted in 1904. The second was created in Barcelona in 1904. The third one cas created in France, in 1911. That was this third one who started to produce aviation engines in 1915, on basis of Mercedes-Benz engines. Then they developped their own V-8 engine that equiped the SPAD planes.

The 12Y is a far extrapolation of this engine.
