A-20B thoughts

Its interesting to me that they didn't go with the Pe-2 Series 359, since we already have every other pe2 at this stage (maybe that plane was too late?)

Instead we got the A-20B! (Which makes 3 lend lease planes in one battle, and 4 in total) also known as the DB-7A, it was also the A-20 model that the USAAF sent the most to the USSR.

Another interesting thing I read (on wikipedia) was

"The Soviets were dissatisfied with the four .30-calibre Browning machine guns — themselves only capable of firing at a top rate of 600 rounds per gun per minute — and replaced them with the faster-firing, 7.62mm calibre ShKAS, capable of up to 1800 rounds per gun per minute"

So maybe this means we will get the ShKAS as a mod?

Either way. Look forward to this plane ever much. I hope we get torps included. And very interested in hearing other peoples thoughts :)

There are no more unlocks. Please call them mods.

I am very excited for it and all the other ground attackers. I like ground pounding.  :yahoo:

Yeah - looking forward to that A20

Did the B model carry torps or the C?

Yes I love the looks of US engines. P47 engine also comes to mind.

The A20 will fit a Murmansk scenario too.

C model I believe...

I haven't been able to find evidence either way. I sure hope that the A-20B model has torpedo carrying capabilities... this is the ideal place to have it. The Germans will likely have three aircraft capable of torpedo carrying capability - the Russians should have at least one.

From what I have read, the C model was used to carry torps, but only the Russian version.

I am happy for the A 20, but I think I am more excited for the HS 129, that is the plane making me fly German

Beautiful Douglas plane designed in California by Ed Heinemann: fantastic choice!

I'm really looking forward to the A20. I'm a multi-engine fan so the more the merrier! Plus it would be good to get a few more western a/c. Will the dials, etc be in English or Russian?

I'm also looking forward to using torps. Brings back fond memories of IL2 1946.

Very likely to be American style instruments.

From the article I posted a link to previously:

Bellabs: Were the instruments used in these reconfigured nose compartments American- or Soviet-manufactured? Wasn't there sometimes a shortage of American spare parts?

Sterlikov: No, there was never any problem. All the instruments were American-gyromagnetic compass, magnetic compass, air speed indicator, altitude, et cetera. In general, all the instruments in all compartments were American. We did not replace any of them.

http://lend-lease.airforce.ru/english/articles/sterlikov/index.htm

One of those expediency things during the war. The instruments work fine... so keep them. Though they did rip out the gun turret and install a Russian one.

I agree, we need less ambiguity in our terminologies. ;)

Will we get the option to equip the A20 with 20mm, or am I thinking of the wrong version?

lol I think I've just been spoilt with FSX for so many years...KIAS, feet, miles.

I am though looking forward to doing some ground attack with the A20B. Anyone know how they dropped their bombs? ie. level bombing, shallow dive, skip, delayed? with 4 MGs up front I wouldn't expect there to be a bombardier up there too. Also, what kind of missions did they do on the eastern front? ie. anti shipping (skip/level bombing)?

I don't think the A-20B had a turret.  The Russian turret is a manual (unpowered) one but no doubt provides a much better field of fire than the original - lol.

With production block A-20G-20-DO, an electrically-driven manned Martin power turret equipped with two 0.50-inch machine guns was introduced in place of the single hand-held machine gun in the rear compartment.

The USA reserved no less than 3125 DB-7Bs, DB-73s, DB-7Cs, A-20Bs, A-20Cs, A-20Gs, A-20Hs, and A-20Ks for delivery to the USSR under Lend-Lease. 2901 of these were actually delivered.

I thought we were getting the glass nose version.

Does that one have front MGs too?

Yes, the glass version had four rifle caliber mgs

The A-20G had ("metal nose"?) with six .50 cals

Guys how accurate is this info: http://www.aviation-history.com/douglas/a20.html

The A-20B was powered the same as the A model and had a modified Plexiglas nose. Bombs racks were changed from a vertical to horizontal configuration and the bomb bay could house a 200 gallon (750 liters) fuel tank for ferrying purposes. Two 0.50 calibermachine guns were mounted in the forward fuselage, one 0.50 was placed in the open dorsal position and one 0.30 was mounted in the ventral position. A field modification replaced the plastic nose with a solid nose, which housed four to six 0.50 caliber machine guns.

Was the bombload for this variant 2400lb?

Just based on the Ju88 where it was not possible to model the 20mm mod due to bombsite etc I suppose if above is accurate that the solid nose mod would also then be out? I would really like it though.

There are words that would be otherwise censored that I would like to say about that photo.

Wow will suffice!

I'll be happy with any A20 - but I WANT those nose guns. Collectors plane maybe?

I'm glad we are getting frontal guns even though they are smaller caliber :)

I too want those guns but what did the Russians use most of the time?

also, I'm hoping that we have the ability to set ships on fire with guns. I remember IL2 days meant only bombs/torps/rockets could damage ships.

Yep - no strafing damage was a bummer

That was one of the few things I've ever complained about.

Later on the A-20G was used in the anti-shipping role.

The G model is somewhat different than the A-20B we're getting. The nose armament, more armour and a powered twin .50cal turret for example.

A 20s and M3 Stuarts, training in the desert in California, I'm not sure of the year.

I can't wait for this aircraft, I really like American bomber design so I'm very happy to see this coming to the game. I'm hoping to see a heavy bomber like the B-24 or B-17 if they ever do a Mediterranean or West European theater. It would be a dream come true to fly B-24s over Germany or Italy. The A-20 will hold me over for now, I can't wait to fly it.

I'm really hoping they do a B25 as well. That bird served everywhere!!

B25 would be fantastic - but only if we already have the Betty. Betty will be essential.
