Hello

I purchased recently the Saitek X55 Rhino HOTAS, i'm pretty happy with it, but i want to ask you if i will have some advantages with rudder pedals.

Do i really need them, for IL-2 BoS / BoM ?

Please give me some advices, guys.

If i have some options enabled, like Piloting assistance, are they available as well for Multiplayer ?

Thanks in advance

I wouldn't say you get an advantage in the competitive meaning, as twist sticks work well too as far as aiming is concerned. For taxiing, you might even find it harder with rudders in the beginning, but it's just a matter of getting used to it.

In the long run, I think you should plan on getting rudders. Many planes lack rudder trim, and it's easier keeping your plane flying straight with rudders. It's also feel nicer in general.

In theory yes, on servers that allow it. In practice, I don't know of any populated server that allows them. I think even Normal has this assistance disabled (but could be wrong).

I'd say they are right up there with trackir as an essential item.

Twist sticks work, but pedals work better!

Lots of people get along fine without rudder pedals, but if you are going to spend a lot of time they are definitely better in the long run, so the sooner you get them the less time you will waste learning twist habits that you will have to unlearn with pedals.

After all, if twist stick really was a good way to control an aeroplane, I expect that real aeroplanes would use them! ;)

Avyx, I believe rudder pedals are one of those pieces of kit that once you get used to you really don't want to fly without. As coconut mentions there is a period of adjustment but it soon becomes second nature. Rudder pedals would be 3rd on my wish list, after a good joystick (which you have) and some form of head tracking.

That topic arised multiple times over the years and my opinion on it is still the same.

Rudder pedals give you more precision and easiness on rudder usage. You'll basilcy takeoff, land, taxi and manouver way more precise than with a twist axis controller with some time. That does not mean they'll boost your sucess instantly but rather threw a slow, often slightly painfull learning curve.

As a real pilot I was a little spoiled when I got my first set of pedals but still had some entry issues. It's not only enought to adopt to your use of rudder pedals but also understanding when and how to use them properly (not meant as an offense, there're quite a few real pilots who don't use rudder properly).

Ifyou just recently got a new joystick I'd advise to stick with that for a while and trying to get used to that piece of equipment before moving on to the next. Pedals with differential brakes are a clear benefit in BoS/BoM especially for ground handling but you also have to keep in mind the learning curve and it's pricetag.

Thanks for your advices, guys

Do I have to make some 'special' settings, for the joystick, to use properly the twist axis controller?

From my personal experience, no,you don't need them. They are not ace-in-a-day device. But they are addictive like drugs. You try them once and you are in with no way back ;)

Do you have rudder pedals, Brano ??

By the way he (Brano) described them I would bet serious bank that he does! That, at least, was my reaction to getting pedals. Did getting pedals make me an ace? Not even close. Did it make me a better pilot. Yeah a bit. Did it make simming much more fun and immersive? Oh hell yeah!

With twist stick it's harder to separate rudder from ailerons... hand movements from wirst movements; it becomes one fluid device that you just move with your hand. It makes basic intuitive flying actually easier - your hand just guides the plane - but makes more complex maneuvers even less intuitive. With pedals, rudder and ailerons are clearly two devices you operate separately.

Also in aircraft without rudder trim, holding your wrist at an angle to maintain the ball in the centre is really tiring on the wrist. Legs are way more powerful, and you can hold that rudder input all day.

And also far less unwanted cross control inputs.

Do you need them?  No.  I have known many good pilots that did not have them.

Do they make you a better pilot?  Maybe with certain things while others can be achieved just as well with the twist.

Why do people have them?  Some of it is to do those finer things they achieve but i think many also have them for the immersion factor.  If you have every flown IRL it just feels natural using them (at least to me).  I had a twist stick at first and I just never felt comfortable with it.  The twist on the joystick broke and instead of getting a new stick, I bought pedals.  Fell in love immediately.  I bet if you had a poll, most of the people who fly iRL own them.  I have known non-pilots that both love them and hate them.  There's no back and white.

I would suggest waiting a while.  See how you do with the twist.  It also depends on your budget.

Okay, thank you.

I'm waiting a while and see how i'm doing with the joystick.

Somewhat late to this party.  Absolutely necessary...no, but consider this:  I got pedals because I was blowing out my wrist with my X52 Pro.  Now that I've had pedals for years, I can't fly combat without them.  For civilian FS, I usually don't bother with the hassle of setting up my pedals, for in civilian flying yaw control is considerably less aggressive.
