First impressions

Coming from the ROF, everything looks very familiar, which is a good thing of course.

- Graphics on MAX, runs perfectly on 780gtx (FPS locked to 60fps), oh and those are gorgeous,

- controls assignment is the same as in ROF, but you can change them on the fly, no need to exit a mission/game,

- TrackIR 5 works perfectly,

- sounds are fine,

- I need to do some more flying to get an impression of the FM, BTW ground handling looks very nice and realistic.

A perfect start, IMO, keep the good work guys.

Now, back to flying.

So jealous right now.... hate you guys so much!   ;)

Seriously, I can't believe they have public testing available after 18 months.  The fact that people other than the developers are now playing this game is damn exciting!

So far I have done the first mission several times and the game is running smooth and looks great. Even though it is just a runway with one plane I am having a blast. The thing that stands out for me are the sounds of the engine and then the blackout breathing is sweet, very emersive. Very impressed!!

Hi Fifi glad to see you made it over from ROF. :salute:

Bad Performance here. 2600K 4.5 Ghz and 680 GTX SLI 4 GB and with 1920x1080 high setting about 17FPS. Triple Screen 5760x1080 unplayable. RoF getting on triple with high setting constantly 60-70 FPS. Looks to me very unfinished in terms of performace. Medium setting not change anything.

Bad Start for me.

Well, that`s strange. It runs practically the same as ROF on my side. I`m running an OC`ed i7 2600K, 8gb of RAM, a SSD drive and 780gtx, latest nVidia drivers.

Not lately, was on DCS mainly...BOS will have hard times to make me forget the stunning P51

I'm having more fun with this one plane and runway than I ever had in CloD...

Haha...not a surprise  :P

Also very good first impression here, runs smoothly with gtx 680, even with time sped up 16x, i think my laptop could easily run it. Taking off was easy after only few tries.

Runs well..looks very good, had 1 CTD after 30 minutes but that might have been on my end. Running it on expert settings and I noticed I get no speed indication or % of pitch, rad..ect from the little window. It stays at 0%. other than that, wow!

+Graphics, very nice and crisp

+runs fine on my setup

However im not sold so far for Lagg's FM, especially roll rate seems to be very fast. Need to find some documents but generally it feels too agile and responsive compared to what i have read from real pilot notes.

Runs very smoothly, couple of small bugs, but nothing in the least bit show stopping.  Anyone familiar with RoF will feel right at home.

A very solid start from the team.

I've flown a few missions and overall the impression is good with a few minor issues.

The first things of notice for me was:

The sim runs very well with maxed out settings on my 2.5 year old PC. Only major graphics issue is, that it takes a few seconds to load all objects onto screen, and it has to load the planes' skin all the time when switching between views (same as in RoF but with noticably longer load time)

The graphics are generally nice, though there are few things that make you go "Wow! Haven't seen that before in a sim". The most remarkable are propably the different reflections on different materials, the sun glinting in little scratches in the canopy glass and the realistic portrayal of tracks in the snow. The best thing about the graphics though is that it's all very well balanced and all the different kinds of objects and textures fit well together with nothing really sticking out (like RoF but very unlike ClOD)

The airfields look GREAT with loads of stuff going on and literally hundreds of static objects. Even though there isn't a single human in sight, you get the impression of a busy airfield.

The engine sound and sound of the wind is really great and overpowers everything else most of the time (as it should) Most other sounds are kinda underwhelming, though some may be placeholders.

While the landscape is nothing to get too excited about, it basically looks like you'd expect a completely snow covered landscape to look, it is very well realised and realy looks icy cold.

LOD seems to work as well as it does in RoF and you get the sense, that you'd be able to spot and ID objects at a fair distance.

Ground handling is TOUGH and seems just a tad too sensitive to me (but I might be wrong, I've never taxied a plane) with loads of inertia that makes it necessary to plan any ground maneuver well in advance. There is close to zero steering authority without significant airflow over the rudder, which creates kind of a paradox, when you throttle up too fast and start ground looping, but can't steer if you throttle down again. The onte thing that's not a problem is nosing over, the LaGG seems to sit firmly on its ass.

The flight physics are as good or better than RoF. There are too many little details to sum up, but it all makes you really feel like you're flying. I'd like to mention the way the controls stiffen at high speeds and lose effectiveness at low speeds, which feels completely different from one another. You definately have no "on rails" sense here, the plane is NOT automatically going the direction, where you point the nose.

The LaGG is a peculiar plane with a lot of character but very sensitive to piloting errors. Despite the tremendous noise of the engine it definately feels underpowered, I have yet to execute a succesful loop. She handles well in the rolling plane and actually feels kinda nimble (though with no other planes to compare it to, it's hard to tell). She's not particularly directionally stable and takes a while to settle after violent maneuvers. She spins readily and with little warning but not viciously and recovery is straightforward. Even the simplest maneuvers take a lot of coordination, as the likes to dip her nose in even a slight bank. She'll be a handful but definately interesting to use in combat.

Much of the damage model is still obvious placeholder. Crashing your plane results in nothing but a weak exploding sound and your plane model disappearing in a small cloud of smoke and fire. The propeller shows no damage when dipped into the ground, and most of the "crashing" sounds seem to be missing.

Interface is nice enough and RoF players will feel somewhat at home, but it's still very basic and seems bare.

Those are my initial impressions.

Generally I would say, that BoS seems to deliver what I'd expect (and I expect a lot). I'm kinda disappointed, that the DM is still far from being finished, as it was the aspect of the sim, I looked the most forward to see, but it'll all come in good time. What is there is really good and runs well.

Excellent start indeed   Was expecting a lot more issues. The game runs at stable 60fps on my GTX 760, with the exception of that prop wash snow effect on the runway. Seems to be quite expensive effect, costing -20fps at least.

Some random questions:

- is that vertical speed indicator implemented and works?

- Is there in cockpit way to figure out your flaps position?

Thanks Finkeren.  Very informative.

It's funny, I have the same impression, but I think it makes perfect sense. From what I understand, the LaGG design was always quite nimble with very good roll rate, but it was from the start underpowered, overloaded and too unstable to make good use of its agility. Once they fitted it with an Ash-82 and installed automatic slats, you got the La-5, which was extremely agile.

From my limited time with the LaGG in BoS, I get the impression that it's:

1. Fairly agile and responsive on the controls, especially in the rolling plane.

2. Underpowered and heavy. It seems kinda "weighed down" during most maneuvers, especially in vertical maneuvers. Bleeds energy like crazy. It seems to accelerate rather slowly except in a dive.

3. Controls are stiff above 500 km/h but still controllable.

4. Spins easily and with little warning, but recovers nicely.

5. Stable enough in a roll but other maneuvers take a lot of coordination. Takes 1 - 2 seconds to settle after ending a maneuver.

6. Rather slow. Very hard get above 500 km/h in level flight.

None of this seems to contradict, what I've read about the LaGG.

I am impressed, this is the new generation of combat flight sim! Good job developers!

Flying the LaGG gives a historic feeling; underpowered, tricky got to be careful for stalls and need to be concentrated for landings . But I loved flying it. Game runs smooth. The max setting graphics for me is 1280, could not get it higher. Game looks great at this setting anyway. I made a pirouette after landing and you could see the tracks of the 3 wheels in the snow, looks great. Night mission look nice with light from vehicles down there.

My guess is this is some sort of SLI issue. Try running just with a single Titan.

Post your specs and settings in the bug report forum. There definately seems to be something wrong here. I get great performance with maxed out graphics on a much weaker system.

- Is there in cockpit way to figure out your flaps position?

Yes there are buttons near your left knee. When the flaps are all the way out/in the out/in button pops out.

Clear as chocolate but try it and you'll see what I mean.

For t/o flaps I hold my button down to the count of 4. YMMV.

Are you running windowed or full screen? For some reason the windowed mode is vastly faster on my rig.

First impressions:

- Graphics are great and it's smooth running for me at very high detail levels... but then there's not much going on so no surprise there!

- TIR implementation is equally excellent as in RoF. It's simply cool being able to lean all the way out of the canopy and watch your engine burst into life from there

- Getting everything set up in terms of keys for a proper takeoff was trial and error and a bit a PITA

- Wheel brakes seem very ineffective on the ground, I am having a hard time keeping the aircraft turning to the right because of engine torque

All in all it is quite good judged by the little we have been given to play with so far, looking forward to the Bf109F and proper weapons some time soon!
