Today I did some test adding the radio beacon to my airfield.

I placed the object, linked it, assigne the entity to German country and set Channel to 1.

The issue is that the AFN-2 gauge seems not working correctly...the vertical needle properly shows the direction inbound the beacon...but the horizontal needle doesn't move at all even if I'm 60 miles away from station, nor the light in middle of the gauge lights up!

Is there anything I'm doing wrong or simply the AFN-2 gauge doesn't work in IL2?

Would be great to have this system working fine, mainly for scenarios where map or other artificial navigation aids are not provided

Thanks

Agreed 100%

The range needle (vertical) work.

In the game Radio Beacon range is ~200 km, the AFN-2 needle became drop noticeable around 60-70 km away from antenna.

The light work when fly over the antenna, but is very briefly, I don't manage to take a screenshot. This is altitude dependent, more low, more briefly.

In night flight (to see the light) the AFN-4 needles is not fluorescent like other instruments, what make difficult to read this positions, see above in the red box the picture cleared - other issue is the lack of the Morse code signal...

If you flying away from antenna is almost impossible stay over the beacon like is possible in il-2'46, the needle became swing left to right like in CLoD.

Even using "AP4LF" and his correction inputs I manage do stay over the beacon, flying away from antenna.

In the way that is now the thing was modeled for "casual players", but this kind of players don bother with this and not to fly more than 50km away from home base...  :(

Like the actual night "always full Moon" done for people do dogfights... this impairs night missions...

Thanks a lot for your feedback Sokol, I'd really like to get more realistic gauges in IL2; even if casual players love fast action I think these features could come in handy for server with navigation aids disabled; more people could fall in love with these features.

Getting back to the IL2 AFN-2....in my test I started flying away from beacon....but the horizontal needle didn't move from the 0 distance (top) position

By the way, do you know how the real FuG 16ZY / AFN-2 worked?

Thanks

No, only reference is the way that Team Daidalos modeled this for IL-2'46:

From other topic there:

In QM based on Kalach, Stuka flying to 270, at ~50 KM away (Surovikino) the AFN-2 range needle read this:

AFN_2_2.jpg

The AFN-2 needles dont seem fluorescent:

But in RL Stuka the guy can redirect the spotlight over the instrument to see - or maybe use a flashlight... in game is PITA.

Thanks a lot...really interesting stuff  :salute:

In Pe-2 the instrument that show the range is the one in bottom line, left of clock in RPK panel in bombardier cockpit. The shortcut for this view is KP Del+KP 5  Del.

The last screen is around ~20 KM near runway.

Answers in Q&A (Russian) point that will be not changes/improvement in radio navigation.

Q - Do you plan to increase the number of channels for beacon? And will the PKK in the MIG in BoM?
A - While not planning to complicate.

Q- The game is implemented RPK-10.
Is it possible to prescribe how the operating frequency drives airfields, their choice and variation in flight, as well as the appearance frequency in the brief or the map. It is necessary to give the pilot a choice of landing airfield (operational retargeting, when flying with minimum fuel residue or damage to the aircraft, and of course while landing at a minimum of weather, at night ...)

A - Now it shows the nearest allied beacon antenna, do not intend to complicate.

Things like select frequency or the device detect the signal and not just point for the antenna, means complication - for public target. Anyway nights always full moon allow "IFRR" navigation all time.  ;)

Sorry if a bit off topic and maybe a stupid question but, does anybody know why we find the radio navigation system only in bombers and later war era fighters?

You have radio navigation aids in some Russian fighters (Yak-1, La-5).

Lw fighters in early war are intended for good weather and short distances operation, and this equipment represent additional weight.
