Caudron431 Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 I cannot explain why but the only thing i see is a rainbow??? So, how serious is it doctor?
KoN_ Posted November 22, 2015 Posted November 22, 2015 Getting worried about you . This Mig had better come soon .
SvAF/F19_Klunk Posted November 22, 2015 Posted November 22, 2015 u are almost as twisted as I am. congratulations
216th_Jordan Posted November 22, 2015 Posted November 22, 2015 exhaust pipes seriously too big though.
Trooper117 Posted November 22, 2015 Posted November 22, 2015 Infatuation invariably leads to disappointment...
Willy__ Posted November 22, 2015 Posted November 22, 2015 The lack of rainbow flaps is disturbing... 2
AndyJWest Posted November 22, 2015 Posted November 22, 2015 (edited) I'm rather looking forward to having to use my (limited) telepathic powers when taking off and landing the beast - or did they build circular runways, so you could at least see one edge of it? Possibly when instructed to build a high-altitude interceptor, Mikoyan and Gurevich took the instructions literally (probably a good idea in the political context), and didn't bother themselves with luxuries like being able to interact visually with anything below 2000m... Incidentally, when waiting for a MiG-3, does it count as 'arrived' when the nose gets there, or do you have to wait for the cockpit? Edited November 22, 2015 by AndyJWest
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted November 22, 2015 Posted November 22, 2015 It appears so far that the MiG-3 and Ju-52 have caused pathological anticipation. I am a victim, as is Finkeren, and McKvack with the Ju-52. No regrets though. 1
Skoop Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 That's pretty good, watercolor is not very easy to work with.
Jupp Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 ~S~ Finkeren, Magnifique! Blue Skies, !S -Jupp-
Finkeren Posted November 23, 2015 Author Posted November 23, 2015 That's pretty good, watercolor is not very easy to work with. Trust me, I don't usually work in watercolors, but if I had wanted to, I could easily have made something far better. This was simply the result of me absent-mindedly splashing color onto a piece of paper while encouraging my three year old to do the same
Feathered_IV Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 I think it's fantastic. All the more so that it was painted off the cuff so to speak. Without sounding like too much of a wanker, I think you really captured the essence of the thing.
Guest deleted@50488 Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 Finkeren, I am looking fwd to it too. But I am even more looking fwd for the day these great team announces new scenery areas and eras, and we get the chance to fly a p51d, a spitfire or even a hurricane! Yes Hurricanes would be great for a start :-) And the day they announce a channel map! And a B-17, Halifax...

Guest deleted@50488 Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 Walrus... Ehehe, that one seems to fit better in RoF... BTW, I really have to start using RoF, that other remarkable sim I invested in sometime ago, buying most of the fleet and all Maps, but used for only a couple of hours...
Brano Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 MiG-3 is Polykarpow design. The only political decision made was that he had to hand it over to Mikoyan OKB.

AndyJWest Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 Ehehe, that one seems to fit better in RoF... RoF already has a magnificent example of the flying boat - though unlike the Walrus, it is confined to water landings. Incidentally, I've seen it suggested that the Walrus aircraft got its name because it could be seen both on land and on the water, like its namesake. Which rather suggests a lack of confidence in its flying abilities.

Trooper117 Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 I hope the Mig-3 did win the war.... then I can read post after post whinging about it's performance envelope!
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 I decided to check the extent of the addiction, of my 1300+ VVS photo collection on my computer, 87 have the MiG-3. Would anyone like me to upload them? They're mostly taken from Yandex, Google, Tumblr and Tessatori's wonderful website, some are common, some are more or less unusual.

216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 I pictured a Galland shrine in a dark basement, am I correct in my assessment?
indiaciki Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 (edited) Does anybody have a picture of Galland's g-force resistant ashtray? Haven't seen it. Edited November 23, 2015 by indiaciki
Dutch Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 ...a random watercolor session with your daughter inadvertently turns into this: Ah c'mon. You decided to paint a watercolour, then blame it on your daughter. The shame.....
Finkeren Posted November 23, 2015 Author Posted November 23, 2015 Ah c'mon. You decided to paint a watercolour, then blame it on your daughter. The shame..... If I had decided on my own to do this, I'd have made something better This is not exactly something to be proud of (unless your name is raaaid)
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 Does anybody have a picture of Galland's g-force resistant ashtray? Haven't seen it. According to an extensive post about Galland's Emils on the WT forums it was just an average train ashtray 'appropriated' (i.e. nicked) from Deutsche Reichsbahn. Now, either the lid's hinges were really tight sturdy or Galland enjoyed a shower of cigarette ashes every time he went inverted or Gs went into the negatives

My father told me they used the floor as an ashray so now and then they'd open the canopy and go inverted in their piston trainers to get rid of the cigarettes and junk on the floor It wasn't exactly successfull, though. 216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 Sounds disastrous Is that an Aero 3 by the way? For the MiG-3 fans, a couple of graphs from Il-2 Compare on airspeed and climb against the Bf-109F-2. Since a lot of people love to take a stab at the old Il-2's interpretation of the late series MiG-3 we're getting I picked the old one, but the difference is marginal within that software at least. These are just for fun and hold no value - it's just a convenient way to compare things quickly, and the conclusions are interesting even if probably not too accurate. TAS graphics, MiG-3 in red, 109 in blue. Darker colours mean engine running at boosted settings. The MiG-3 is little over 10km/h slower at sea level (a difference slightly smaller than the one between the Yak-1 and Bf-109F-4 and G-2 in BoS). The biggest performance gap favouring the 109 occurs at 5,000m where the 109 goes about 25km/h faster. At 6,500m the MiG-3 matches its foe, and from then on the difference is overwhelmingly favourable to the MiG-3. It's worth noting that at all altitudes the MiG-3 pushing the engine can catch up a 109 running without boost. Rate of climb per altitude, same colour scheme. Without forcing the engine, the MiG-3 starts well at sea level then watches its performance deteriorate until about 5,500m where it can match the 109F-2. Above 7.000m the MiG-3 holds a 3m/s climb advantage. Here the MiG-3 using WEP can out-climb a Bf-109 running normally, but the 109 driver can easily make up for that by using WEP as well. The cooling characteristics of the MiG-3 with the AM-35A engine are unknown to me at least, so it's hard to say how much will the MiG-3 pilot be able to enjoy that boost. Conclusion: According to old Il-2 data, the old MiG-3 best matches the 109F-2 at sea level and then gains the upper hand at around 6.000m and up. Between 3,000 and 5,000 the Bf-109F-2 has a very clear performance advantage. The turn performance is more or less closely matched - the Bf-109F-2 holds the advantage at most speeds while the MiG-3 can turn inside it between around 320km/h and 370km/h. For those who are interested, a head-to-head comparison between the old and new MiG-3s there show a mostly similar performance. The late MiG-3 faster by 2km/h at sea level, this difference constantly grows to about 10-12km/h at 5.000m (thereby slightly bridging the gap between it and the F-2), and finally reaches 20km/h above 7.500m. Climb rates are worse for late models at sea level by less than 0,3m/s, but the late MiG-3 catches up at 1.000m and improves up until 7.000m, climbing about 1m/s faster. At 5,000m, the late MiG-3 climbs 0,8m/s faster than the old model. Turn performance is the same above 360km/h - below that, the late model has an edge because of its slats. When compared to the Bf-109F-2, the late model also has an advantage at the same speeds. Once more, not binding and probably will not match the results we see in BoM, but fun either way
