Danziger Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 (edited) It has been a few months now since the modified MiG-3 was released. Fortunately or unfortunately the team reacted very quickly to my original post and enlarged the exhaust pipes, made a proper 3d starter tooth, fixed the radio mast, and corrected the shape of the lower engine cowling where it meets the wing roots. They actually acted so quickly that a few other things that need to be corrected weren't mentioned in time to be fixed then. The 3d modeler has been very busy the last few months with the rest of BoM as well as neat things like the new Yak-1B and Ju-52. I am sure there are other things being worked on that have not been mentioned officially yet. I posted in the graphical bugs thread an update with this topic so that it doesn't become forgotten in all of these busy times. I just wanted to use this thread to be able to go into greater detail. Here I can use as many posts as I like to upload diagrams and pictures where I really don't wish to overrun the graphical bugs thread with a lot of posts of only MiG-3 things. This is an old thread but I am basically just saving it for this use of keeping archive of details for MiG-3 for when the team gets time to have a look. Edited October 22, 2016 by BorysVorobyov 2

Finkeren Posted December 16, 2015 Posted December 16, 2015 All points are correct. Still, it's a far better model than the WT one. 1
6./ZG26_5tuka Posted December 16, 2015 Posted December 16, 2015 Nice finds. I agree it looks quite off. Did they model a special variant with improved aerodynamics (similar to Yak-1) or is it a usual serial model compareable to the pics? Hopefully they can adjust it's appearance. Especially the pipes and the upper cowling are glarign once you've noticed the difference. 1
SR-F_Winger Posted December 16, 2015 Posted December 16, 2015 It's just a shame for me because it is the plane I am most looking forward to in the series. All of the other aircraft look amazing. The rest of the MiG-3 looks great as well. It seems like when they got to the nose section they just kinda quit making a detailed replica and said a decent approximation is good enough. You dont even own a copy - do you? Waiting for the MIG? Just asking since you dont have a sign under your avatar. 1
Danziger Posted December 27, 2015 Author Posted December 27, 2015 (edited) http://www.avia-n-aero.ru/photo.php?category_id=19&parent_id=19&photo_id=239&countdisplay=&start=120 This photo shows exactly what I mean about the lower cowling. Since it is removed on this photo you can look at where it attaches and see that it isn't a semicircle shape like on the 3d model. It is flat on sides and bottom. This page has quite a lot of good close up photos. http://mig3.sovietwarplanes.com/mig3/yuri-rr/walk-nose.htm Edited December 31, 2015 by BorysVorobyov
Danziger Posted December 31, 2015 Author Posted December 31, 2015 And please do not take these as insults. I love the new Il-2 series and I really love the MiG-3. I just want to see it modeled as accurately as possible and I'm sure the development team does too
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted December 31, 2015 Posted December 31, 2015 That's some great work and attention to detail there It seems these forums are filled with reliable MiG-3 consultants. Hopefully as the dev team makes some time the 3D artists can rework these details to improve this already stunning model. 1
Danziger Posted January 19, 2016 Author Posted January 19, 2016 Good news! I got a reply and they said the see through hole in the inert gas tube is definitely going to be fixed and they will look to see if the other problems I mentioned exist! So they will definitely look at it more closely 1
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 Way to go, Vorobyov! Glad to hear your initiative and sharp eye for detail will be of use 1
Danziger Posted January 19, 2016 Author Posted January 19, 2016 (edited) Just a last effort of looking up materials and marking where you should compare to the 3d model. Edited January 23, 2016 by BorysVorobyov 1
Learstang Posted January 20, 2016 Posted January 20, 2016 Nice work on helping them correct the MiG-3 3-D model! The programmers have done a good job with the modelling, but if the models can be made even more accurate, so much the better. Best Regards, Jason 1
6./ZG26_5tuka Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 Not trying to discredit what you wrote, but you have to consider FoV when comparing ingame or model viewer images with flat 2d blueprints. At certain FoVs you get a "fisheye" effect. you can notice this very well when playing with the camera position and FoV while looking at objects in replays or model viewer. It's good to see you don't give up and relentlessly try to point out the errors you find from different perspectives. 1

216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 MiG-3 model updated to some extent this last patch, how much was done so far? I presume the most recent annotations weren't included for time reasons, but either way good job 1
Danziger Posted January 28, 2016 Author Posted January 28, 2016 (edited) Definitely the lower cowling was fixed. The spinner was sharpened and the starter tooth was remodeled. The skin denmarcation line on the lower cowling was also fixed. I think skinners may have to go back and tweak this area in their skins. It is really good to see that they care so much I did not expect to see any improvements until much later Edited January 28, 2016 by BorysVorobyov
6./ZG26_5tuka Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 (edited) The upper cowling also looks wider to me. Glad you could help the devs to get it corrected. Edited January 28, 2016 by Stab/JG26_5tuka 1
1CGS =FB=VikS Posted January 28, 2016 1CGS Posted January 28, 2016 Borys, thank you very much for such a detailed and fundamental approach!Best regards! 5
Danziger Posted January 30, 2016 Author Posted January 30, 2016 A big thank you from me to the development team for being so generous! I had no idea that it would be fixed so quickly which is why I was compiling the other little minor details I found while trying to find good photographs of the cowling. I was very surprised to see it in this update. Thank you again! 2
Finkeren Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 Great job Borys. This should serve as an example of how to get things done. 1
Cybermat47 Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 You dont even own a copy - do you? Waiting for the MIG? Just asking since you dont have a sign under your avatar. He DOES have a sign under his avatar -_- 1
Venturi Posted August 28, 2016 Posted August 28, 2016 Looks pretty good to me, hard to see where you are getting all this. 1
Danziger Posted October 13, 2017 Author Posted October 13, 2017 1. Spinner. I really don't think we can get away with simply adding the starter tooth to the existing spinner. Each type of spinner looks different. I would suggest we either make it proper and permanent or leave it off and make the proper shape without. Unless they can do some sort of black magic like with the selectable turrets and use two different spinners. War Thunder has MiGs with and without starter tooth on the spinner. However they use completely separate plane models. To try and combine both into one spinner I do not think will work because one version will always look incorrect. Here are all later model MiGs as ours. With the starter tooth the spinner is more pointed. Without the starter tooth the front of the spinner is more round and blunt. With starter tooth. Without. Some of both.
