Since v1.02 I haven't used the terrain.cfg as they improved the in-game detail distance.  I believe it still works though.

There's still disapearing and reappearing forrests, trees and stuff... even at full settings

I don't have a terrain file in C:\Program Files (x86)\1C Game Studios\IL-2 Sturmovik Battle of Stalingrad\data\graphics

Didn't they remove the terrain file? I would sure like to get the game to look the way it did before they "fixed" it...

You have to create a text file and the save it as a cfg.

Here is a link to mine

https://www.dropbox.com/s/31avf1yiclnauom/terrain.cfg?dl=0

Just drop that in the IL-2 Sturmovik Battle of Stalingrad\data\graphics folder.

I think it adds a little bit more distance to the vanilla settings overall.

You can tweak the settings in the cfg file until you get something you are happy with.

Here is Custard's file so that you do not have to worry about the DropBox annoyance.

There are two things going on.

There is a line at which trees/cities resolve to clear detail as you approach, or that fades as you move away, that moves with your aircraft.  This is relatively close to you and, I think, is what you are referring to in your comment.  This is controlled by the Graphic Setting level in game, i.e., Low, Balanced, High, Ultra.  The higher the setting the further out the line is from you (or has been titled "the bubble").  This setting has been like this since day one.

Then there is the level of detail of forests, etc. out near the horizon.  This is controlled by the Distance Landscape Detail setting of 1X to 4X and/or the terrain.cfg file.  At lower settings the distance detail gets murky, with higher levels the detail has more defined edges, etc.  This was recently improved in the game.

I think there is a difference using the terran cfg file even if it is a slight one.

The first screenshot is vanilla at 5K, the second is with the cfg file at the same altitude.

I tried Coconut's settings by editing the last few lines to this:

texlod=8192,8
texlod=8192,8
texlod=8192,8
texlod=4096,8
texlod=4096,8

I think it's down to personal preference but I will keep using the cfg file.

I'm not sure which is first and second, but I prefer the left one. The right one has a crispier city, but the transition to less crispy is quite noticeable (see forest on the island on the left, and top of the city).

The one showing more of Stalingrad on the right is with the cfg.

I think it's a case of testing various setting to get what is best for the individual.

Either way both look much better than before the fix :)

This sim looks absolutely amazing at times, maybe one day we can get them to give more options for draw distance for trees etc, like instead of x4 why not x8 or more for those people who have the PC power.

I'm totally happy with what we've got now though, I can't wait for the Murmansk map and BOM's release for the new aircraft.

Yes. I was referring to that. I'm playing with Ultra setting and max distance and it's still occuring (as it is since day one), it's better now, though. Does changing the cfg help?

I have been playing around with the settings and have now changed the last section to this

texlod=8192,8

texlod=8192,8

texlod=8192,8

texlod=8192,8

texlod=8192,8

I'm happy with the results. The screen caps are at 5.5K no cloud with vanilla gamma 0.9.

Can somebody spell it out in words of one syllabil?

I downloaded unreasonable's terrain file, thanks.

So I'd like to experiment with the changing the Texlod settings as posted, but within the Terrain file there appear to be 4 sets of Texlod settings so which do I change?

If this works I can see me going shopping for another Graphics card, missus will just love me....................Shhhhhhhhhhhhh

Hi Monument, change the last set of lines to these values:

texlod=8192,8
texlod=8192,8
texlod=8192,8
texlod=8192,8
texlod=8192,8

I have had no stutter and the wheels haven't falling off the wagon but I assume it depends on the PC setup.

Custard many thanks

I'll give it a go.

Need something to pass the time here its been a really dreary summer

Just tried your settings Custard and results are spectacular. This is how the game should look when your GPU is up to it. Thanks, I`m gonna keep these :salute:
