Star Wars Battlefront

Star Wars Battlefront looks and sounds amazing and seems like a lot of fun, but it's the exact same fun I had with Battlefield 2...3...4..Bad Company 1...Bad Company 2. They just keep reskinning the same game skeleton. Kudos to them for making their games look more life like. Too bad they don't play more life like though.

Is it possible to do that with style (i.e. riding up next to the rebels and bumping them off their bikes instead of shooting them)?

Maybe in Grand Theft Starfighter

There could be many improvements, just like the one you mentioned, but somehow, I can't imagine this happening at EA, given the lack of community encouragement.

EA will simply give the main gamer types what they want... more run and gun!

I wouldn't expect much more than that.

Okay so I tried the 'Fighter Squadron' (I say this sarcastically) mode and boy my face hurts from laughter. They have one touch 'dummed down' maneuvers. The maps are very, very small for a flight mode. it's like Call of Duty, no wait it's worse. I really wish we would get a no joke Star Wars tactical flight simulator with the ability to force cockpit only mode on dedicated servers. Will that ever happen? I don't think so unless someone makes it an indie game first and presents it to Disney for distribution. I would love to work on that project for sure, 3D modeling-wise anyway.

The MP is exactly what I expected. You have the run 'n' shotgun corner jumpers, the Mexican Jumping beans, The run 'n' knife/meelee and of course the quick scopers have also infected what could have been a great sim. They have severely missed the mark on this one. They need to take a long hard look at SW:BF2 and Rouge Squadron then start over. This is basically Destiny all over again. Hype, hype, hype, half-finished game + sell you the rest and twice the price.

You know who's fault this is? It is our fault for riding the 'Pre-Order' train. Why finish a game or even make it good when they have all the money already before it's even released? I am so glad that I did not pre-order this game. In fact I haven't per-ordered a game since Modern Warfare 2 came out in 2009. I saw the trend. I knew exactly what was about to happen and look at us now.

IL-2:BoS was a rare exception based on the quality they put out, yes even CloD. I do think however they need to start involving the modding community. I belive it is essential for this SIM to live on more than just a couple of years. Look at Assetto Corsa they have seen the light. It is very disheartening to see the SWBF EA will not include the community. It means we will see another yearly release that is always half done that will charge you another $60 for the other half.

- End rant

Apparently the movie's just as lame and cliche and hyped as the game. Honestly, the best thing to do is stop playing and stop watching things as much as we do. Like you correctly said, we're the ones at fault.

I saw it, I was utterly disappointed how unprofessional and limited movie is. But then I saw all those super hype, ultra positive reviews like omg this star wars is so good. Considering the kind of audience we have this days and movies that attract them (Transformers ...) I am not surprised that movie which only has action gets such positive notes. For most of the people it really did not matter when over 30 years of books, comic magazines and games got thrown into the trash can by Disney to make room for their "ideas". Same happened to Star Trek. Mediocre directors, bad plot, lack of good actors and CGI everywhere is what is left.

At least it was nice to see that George Lucas was not pleased with the movie as well. But he has nothing to say anymore, so something great will be torn apart by primitives.

The movie is quite entertaining while you are watching it with its fast pace and ever changing scenes.  It's only later when you have time to reflect that you think wow, that was pretty weak.

The dialogue between the ace pilot guy and the reformed stormtrooper:

- You've got to get out of here!

- But...  you're a Stormtrooper!!!

- I know, but I'm different.

- Hey!  Then we should escape together

- Yeah!

And really.  Another Death Star?  Built by the "remnants" of the Empire, only a hundred times bigger...  And the Federation homeworld, all gussied up and having cocktails on the balcony.  They couldn't see that colossus being built only light minute away?

While it was certainly better than anything George could have pulled off, it will be interesting to see what more balanced reviewers make of the film a little later when the afterglow has worn off.

I'm ready for the flak at school when I get to say "I really could care less about Star Wars" to some of my friends. Especially the guy who act like it's a crime when you have not, and do not want to play Halo or Fallout...  Anyway... JU-88 HYPE!!!!!!  :P

Had fun in the beta but I didn´t buy the full game - not sure why but something kept me away from it.

I´ve gotten me R6 Siege recently cause I wanted a bit more of a tactical MP experience again and I have to say it´s quite fun.

Be aware: If you have not seen Star Wars 7 there are spoilers within in this discussion :salute:

In the case of both the latest movie and the game, what I felt really lacked was something that was fresh and new.

The Graphics of the game was very good, but I never lived long enough to be able to stop and smell the roses so to speak, nor have room to explore. A friend tells me there will be Star Wars, Battle Star Galactica mods for Star Citizen later on, as its being discussed within the forums. If this is to be, hopefully some may even add a WW2 theme as well.

The movie: The death of an iconic hero, and by the hand of his son, was like a clip in the ear of the first release, (where Obi one, met his fate via his apprentice). It seemed the original rooted ideas, like the Third Riche appeared in this film as well. Rae, what a sweetie, could that be Luke's daughter?

In BoS, with respect to the Mods on request. Has anyone has asked for this responsibility yet, meaning via a community server where the hosts look after it? We may be waiting a while I think, given the game is still developing. No idea sorry.

Would be interesting although a huge undertaking with the quality and size of Star Citizen. I'd rather expect a new game appearing rather than a full conversion mod anytime soon.

What's left to say on topic? Well Star Wars Battlefront fails for me in 2 ways: One, because of things it doesn't offer like various locations, vehicles, factions of the original saga.

Second, because I dislike many things from the (as said fairly limited) content it does offer like the "Star Cards" system, upgrade spamming (grenade, shield generator, jetpack), vehicle spawn mechanics and all kinds of "simplifications" that actually gimp newcomers and pro players alike. But all that isn't actually that suprising with Dice already working out plans for SWBF II.

Yep, I agree. Maybe interesting to see tho, Diaspora was born from Free Space 2

wow a star wars game it sounds so cool, im gonna see if i can take a 12 hour shift work with no day off to buy this game together with a new pc not to play it and throw it away because its eye candy garbage for those without imagination

Well raaaid, imagine this

I'll give a try to Battlefront at some point, with this kind of graphics it wont be outdated or bad in 6 months, 1 year or even 2 years. The only issue might be lack of players, which despite Star Wars franchise may continue to decrease (showing how bad product currently is).

If they will keep updating the game and expanding the content, particularly the free updates, not typical EA DLC "lets squeeze money out of the people" then it may become an interesting thing to get on a sale.

[spoiler Alert!]

And about the movie, I found this video which pretty much summarizes my biggest issues with the movie itself and how it was made.

old quarter games required skill and fast reaction time, most new games are like watching a movie in reward to make click,

Yes this very true, also the "Ping"

Most of the time you need to use the force as to try and guess where the enemy may be. My personal experience of this was located at re spawn quite often.

This may be of some interest to you, it's an online reflex test: http://www.humanbenchmark.com/tests/reactiontime/

Here was my result, to be honest, I just clicked lol.

As disappointing as this game is as obvious was it to see that coming. The trailers were great and probably convinced the one or other to believe it's going to be a very entertaining title, but from the very first moment of gameplay scenes from E3 appearing in the net it was clear they're hadding full speed against a brick wall. Heck even noteable game testing sites posted critical reviews of the Alpha and there was a free beta (with again lots of gameplay footage showing up on YouTube).

But than you read they've sold 12 million copys and lots of people complaining about it being too boring over time, too simplified, uninstalled after one day ect.

Just saying it didn't require Jedi training to forsee that future for the game at all and it's funny that those who complain most are the people who bought it even after all the signs set by EA themself.

From EA's side, everything is working to plan. They got their money, why should they bother about angry reviews and complains about boring gameplay...

I wish they'd just stop rehashing what was a great genre.

Wouldn't say the movie was rubbish but it certainly could have had a better story and action with the means JJ had. They did realise what actually made SW great but didn't manage to develop the idea further to create sth new that fits with whats already there.

Despite the seemingly common hostility towards the prequels (which I don't share) they've shown how sth completely new (the fall of the galactic republic) could be fluidly connected to the original trilogy. I don't quite see this connection with the new movie though and it still appears like a fan project rather than a true start of a continuing trilogy. It just leaves too many question marks and the presented story has good reasons to be up to debate.

There is no way that Nicholas Spargo's video or anyone will ever convince me that the prequels are better than the force awakens. They where the biggest pile of cack ever. As for TFA. It's a cash cow that has been made to make as much money as possible and it has done just that.  I also think he is trying far too hard to find answers to questions that the film makers have deliberately left vague so that can justify many more films.  As for trying to find the science behind why bother it its a Sci fi space opera not real life.

TFA was never going to realistically live up to the hype but I think it was intentionally made as just a massive homage to the originals. The film makers were probably thinking we can't go wrong (winning formula, introduce a whole new fan base while keeping the hard core fans on board)

There is even a line from Han Solo in the movie where someone says "what do we do?" and he replies "what we always do"

As for battlefront, its COD in Star Wars skins as WAB states in his review.

I'm sticking to simulators from now on. The game mechanics in sims are far more advanced, as opposed to the "Arcade" style of game play.

Anyone else ever noticed Russian developers are very good at simulators? :)

Re the movie: If another two are to come, (like in the past), I sure hope they are unique.

Russian and Eastern European devs are just very good at games in general.

Look at their successes in recent years

Mafia series

World of Tanks and various clones (war thunder, warships, modern armour etc)

Stalker

Il-2

The Witcher series

DCS world

That's just a few. (And that reminds me, I have to get some quality Geralt time in.)

I dont think either Poland or Czech Republic would like to be considered eastern, more like central Europe :P

As much as I would like it to be true, its not. They are not that good, they are just the only ones doing such combat simulations. HTC with their Aces High 2 hardly counts, due to lower level of fidelity and Falcon 4.0 is quite old. What is left is very good Microsoft FSX.

And Russian developers achieved as much success as much they failed, for a very good Il-2 Sturmovik series (at the end though, when Forgotten Battles was released at first it had multiple issues as well, but people tend to forget that) there was a great failure called Cliffs of Dover. DCS is developed in rather a great pain, with main developer always slow and late and 3rd parties doing everything on their own.

russian developers come from science and engineering background. western developers come from art and sales/marketing background.

west developers could never achieve the level of realism, detail, accuracy, etc we see as standard in modern sims and especially the study sim genre, they simply don't have the attributes.

the only technically skilled and detail oriented developers were working in military and consultation. in fact, military shooters as a whole like ghost recon and armed assault were only possible from the diaspora of military consultants branching out into entertainment.

this being the military/sim genre will always be the most advanced and detail oriented games on the market, the are developed by, in large part, by those within the sim industry, and they cater to those who enjoy the complexity of simulated systems. the decline of the sim genre should be seriously taken to be a decline in intellectual and aesthetic standards within the game industry. that is all.

So much bashing going on here. TFA was exactly what I anticipated and I was thoroughly entertained. So much so I will probably see it a fourth time next week. If I want high art or high drama I have a great video library to choose from.

With such a high standard set in the beginning, I can understand why some fans may be a little disappointed. I've been to see 7 twice, and like that Rae, (Rey), was a different approach to the past, (female). BB8 was a great design, and Rae's speeder, (that appeared like an old Ferguson tractor). I thought the Tie fighters could of had curved wings and another layer of windows around the existing ones, just to be a little more different to what we've seen. The X wings did appear more personal, with the paint work, and looked more streamlined than they did.

Yes I could :)

I alway admired technical designs and though behind vehicles in the Star Wars universe. In the old trilogy alone there were 5 different Tie fighters, each having a different role or being a newer generation. In this regard I found Episode 7 a little bit disappointing. Yes, they introduced some new ideas that don't look shabby, but most of the things are just "Let's take this from EP4 and make it look 50% cooler". Why should the rebels after their great victory and acess to widespread ressources still use the (by the time of EP6 already aged) X-Wing? Why should the imperial navy still rely on the very basic Tie fighter design that did not even have hyperdirve? Why should the empire build another spheric planet blowing superweapon?

I'd rather have loved to see some things from the comics like the K-Wing make it into the movie since they're well though through and fit the universe better than "pimp my Starfighter" productions.

Edit: You can basicly translate their treatment to the whole movie. It's basicly a 25% cooler made homage to Episode 4.

I was pretty disappointed by the movie too. It's not bad: great visuals, and some pretty good characters too. I have some issues with the story, though.

About the universe: What is the first order, and how did it come to power? Is the Empire still around? I thought episodes 1-3 did a great job of explaining where the Empire came from. There was also a lesson in there, about democracy willingly submitting itself to a dictator. Also, since the rebels won in episode 3, shouldn't they be called something else, now?

I know everybody hated Jarjar Binks, but the rest of episodes 1-3 were OK and the director should have kept the good parts.

Then there is the underlying theme of the movie. For episodes 3 to 6, it would be redemption. For episodes 1 to 3 it would be corruption (how good turns evil). I have no idea what episodes 7 and following will be. Maybe something about nostalgia.

Watched it on Sat... I agree with the statement above.

My opinion, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't as brilliant as some of the rave reviews would have you believe though!

I really wish they would have followed the Kyle Katarn route in 'Dark Forces'... I certainly wish they would leave out the same old one liners that are in every Star Wars film... they just make me cringe now :(

It appears now that Battlefront is completely dead on PC. Trying to join a game is futile because it takes so long even to find 12 players, people just quit. Somehow they really missed the mark appealing to the PC crowd.

The matchmaking combined with too many maps and game modes divides the players up too much. And the lack of a server browser just dooms it.

Too bad, it's a simplistic game but it's quite beautiful looking and a bit fun. But it's a MP-only game with no players.

It should have been "Battlefield" Star Wars i.e. Just take Battlefield 3 or 4 and give it a Star Wars theme. But for whatever reason its appeal just vanished on PC and it's dead. What lost potential. Big shame.
