To Steam or not to Steam-that is the question...

Well I'm asking a little late as I've already gone over to the dark-steam side, but still I have a few questions.I've had CloD on Steam since the beginning & never had any real issues with it ,so I'm not griping. Now with BoS I have apparently two versions of the sim installed;the original  & now Steam. Both seem fully operational. So should I keep both? Is the Steam install somehow mo' better? I don't mind having both but it is a bit redundant isn't it?Can someone explain the reasoning here??

( Oh and how to I adjusr screen size in Steam version, because as it is now installed I no longer have full screen mode.. )

Never mind aspect question- I found the answer. ;)

You are correct sir! Looking back I would have also made copies of my skins, missions,& input folders before the transformation processand then to paste them into the new Steam Version. To be honest with you I am not sure it was worth the trouble, but what do I know?

The switch to Steam is permanent.

Aren't your skins, missions etc still in your old non-steam installation? When I moved to steam version I've just copied over the personal flies, including settings and key bindings.

Valve takes a massive cut from every sale. If you want to support a developer, do not do so through Steam. A couple of days ago they announced that there will be a fee to download the best mods through their Games Workshop. 75% of which goes to Valve.

I am not all sure you are correct.I have two installs & two desk icons. One opens the old still working install. The other opens the new Steam version with skins ,missions & input brought over from the original install. I have no proof but I think the original install works slightly better...

Luke, I believe you are answering different question. The user licence is permanently transferred to steam... so if moving user had standard edition and moved, he can't but premium planes in the shop here (must buy them through steam), and if he pre-ordered BoM, he will have to convert his early access version to steam licence once it's released to steam.

But functionally, a BoS user can log with his licence into any BoS program. Just like my friend who bought through steam can play his campaign on my computer when visiting using his login/password, a user who had original before moving to steam is capable of using any of two programs. No word whether it's legal or not, but certainly possible.

So if you get the steam version you dont lose the original one?

It's still on your drive. Not sure if you can download the installer anymore when you move your licence to steam - if you can't when  you switch computers you may have to bring your installation from old disc, and if there is an "delete old game and install from scratch kind of update" we had once, you may lose it.

I don't think you're answering relevant stuff.

It does not matter what installer you use, what matters is if you bought into or transferred to Steam, then you have to buy all future content on Steam to be compatible.

So lets say you got standard edition - you can't buy La5 key on 777 site and use it with Steam licence, you have to go to steam and buy a plane there (and they call it DLC there).

This is the only relevant thing to the customer.

For me Steam it's a good system to have my games. For me it's like a "data base" of all my games, and they will update all without my action, I don't need to check forums for this game or this other or other webs to download patchs.

I've did the migration to steam of Il2 BoS too, and no problem for me.

About your comment Cyclops, the only problem that I see it's about the price from 777 and from Steam, Will be different?

I think no, but time at time...may be this will be the only possible problem that we will have

I think that answers my initial question:if & when I buy additional planes ( I already have all offered) I will do so through Steam.

Well I am for one very grateful to the 777 team for dealing with this. I would not hold it against them if they did not, since I known exactly what am I doing when I bought the game, and I known what and why am I doing when I made transfer to the Steam.

Now only thing 777 needs to do is make this clear (very clear) on their web store for future customers. Because things can't merge and that was not so clear to me initially with ROF, I've ended up with ROF bombers on ROF steam account, and every other plane on non-steam account. If i stopped anyone making this mistake in BOS, I've done my good BOS dead for the month :)

Wow that's good to know, I always knew Steam was a bad idea, but I never knew you actually lost the ability to buy direct and support the devs once you go steam.  That is buyer lock in to the max. This is good to know, and I will have to keep this in mind. Thank you for the warnings.

Yeah I know some people like steam, but some people also have hobbies of paying people to beat them (the payer) up. If they are enjoying it I guess it is fine, but I always wonder why people will pay the same for reduced functionality. I would think the convenience of the library is balanced out by the inconvenience of having to log in all the time, or have it memory hog from start up. I have my games accessible from my start menu, and it seems convenient enough, at least in fewer clicks and waiting.

I think you're totally misinformed about Steam, they way it works, how money is distributed and just about anything else. In fact, you sound a lot like my mother when she talks about politics, she don't know any real facts, she just 'feels' something is right or not :D

Even if it is for all the wrong reasons with you mate, I do support your decision to stay away from Steam. If you don't know why is Steam good for you then you probably don't need it either...and I do not say this in a bad or sarcastic way. Seriously, if you don't see the benefits, then don't complicate your situation. There is no right call that suits everyone here.
