The topic about upgrading to a newer Direct X version has become more present since some synthetically benchmarks have been published. DirectX 12 seems to over a lot compared to older versions.

Since the Devs have already stated several times that an upgrade would take a lot resources, I would like to know how much you would pay for such an upgrade.

I'm happy with DX9 at the moment. I'd like to see core aspects of the sim worked on so people can play they way they're used to i.e. Dynamic campaigns/coops etc, if we had exactly the same sim right now but with even better graphics I don't think I would like it more (I already like it a lot) and the same game play niggles would still be there.

If one day they release an Il2 with an updated graphics engine I'd be happy to buy it but I just feel it's early days yet. BOS runs very well compared to some other sims. In the early days of CLOD many of us were getting horrible frame rates even on good systems and I can't be alone in not ever wanting to see a repeat of that.

Yes, graphics will be better with dx12, but main reasons for wanting it would be steady frame rates, and more units / ai, on the battlefield. For me....

Simply put, its too much work for the devs and the gains are not going to be worth it for half of the users.

Only people with low end computers will see a marked difference, and they are probably the ones with hardware that is not DX12 compatible.

Also, I'm not very knowledgeable in this area, but will both versions be compatible?

Hypothetically, if they were to make a DX12 version, would all of us be able to play in the same servers?

It will be nice to see the next IL2 in DX12, that's for sure, but I'm afraid it's too late for this iteration of the game.

I voted for 25 Euro - although I expect that if it happens, it will be because people buy the expansions (Battle of Moscow etc), which allows the devs to steadily improve the engine.

The best way for this to happen is for us to support the new content!

I read online somewheres (no link as I can't find it.) that it would take a team of 4 people 4 months to port a title over to dx12. That's roughly 150k-200k investment and a sizable hit on a schedule regardless. Is that realistic, not sure? Will definately support expansions though.

Thanks for that anecdote gnome. It's nice to have an idea of what it would take.

To be honest, this game has 46020 members (2300 pages, each with 20 members).

If every member put in $5 AUD that would equal: $230100 (AUD) which would cover the cost.

So basically work that extra charge into BOM and it's then paid for (in terms of how easier that would be to implement the change over, I leave that to people who know coding).

I would be very interested to know how many units of BoS had been sold, though I realise that that information is confidential.

It's an interesting idea. But, talk is cheap as the saying goes. It would be interesting if a Kickstarter program was offered to see how many people might kick in.

Comparing SP vs Multi-player performance for me, there might be more bang for the buck (more economically feasible) to improving the Dserver program to utilize more than a single core rather than changing to DX12. Looks like that might be causing the most issues currently.

I would pay. Would make this game WAY faster and more beautiful and enjoyable, especially in VR.

I would not necessarily even want such a change, even if free, unless there was a clear set of new features and improvements to base a decision on

as I game developer myself, let me assure you:

changing platforms in such a way is guaranteed to bring you only problems at first, and those will have to be solved at great length and expense before any of the benefits can be enjoyed

so please understand that while some read "move to dx12" as synonymous with adding all the potential features that have been announced with it, it should actually be known that most improvements from such a change would require intense reworking of the game. and quite often, this has to be done only to prevent things breaking or degrading with the transition - let alone actual benefits

so no, I'd vote one step beyond the topmost option in the poll, being "I would not want it at all" -- at least, not by itself

changing platforms will not bring automatic benefits, and if it does, it will bring five new game-breaking problems for every new benefit that comes - this has happened already with Dx11, and several updates later we are STILL suffering from problems brought on with this transition

if this poll had a list of final ingame features and improvements which would only be attainable with a move to dx12, then my vote would possibly be very different indeed

but as it is, suggesting a change merely for the sake of itself, I have to vote "please, don't even go there"

since that's not ACTUALLY in the poll, I chose the dx9 one instead... close enough, I guess

what is it that dx12 can do that cannot be done with 11? what has to be done before those new things can be harnessed? how does that affect what devs can do for the game the way it is now? is there no way this can be done with the existing platform?  what problems would we face with the change?   is it really worth doing?

...those are the questions one oughta ask before doing the programmer equivalent of the proverbial "change of horses mid-stream"

'cause really, changing platforms as suggested here is analogous to rebuilding the foundations of a house in the hopes that it may fix a leak on the roof

dx12 like windows 10
useless marketing gimmick (under dx11 windows 7 still pull much higher fps)

I wouldn't say its a gimmick.. a gimmick would be something like this

PhysX ... I remember when it was first brought to life by Ageia in form of PPU (Physics Accelerator, basically expansion card like gpu, sound card or what have you, that you would stick into PCI o PCI E x 1 slot) and overall effects when I saw what it did in games it was actually implemented. I actually still have somewhere that PPU made by BFG. And then, 1.5-2 years later company was bought by Nvidia and whole acceleration was moved to gpus, eventually leading to marginalization of this technology and turning it into that gimmick thing (anyone who tried Mafia 2 with PhysX on saw what a joke it was).

But that was a bit of nostalgia. Nvm.

Speaking of Dx 12 I'd not invest into it for two reasons: there are still not enough W10 users and it would split playerbase, makes not sense to do so. And then there is a fact that Dx 12 as an API is largely unfinished, rushed and causing numerous problems. If anything investment into a Vulkan should be done. Dx 12 is a waste of time.
