KodiakJac Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 Does anyone know if the soon to be released mission editor will offer the functionality to string single missions together into a campaign where we will be able to create a pilot and track his progress over the course of the campaign? I'm hoping for something similar to IL-2 1946 and CloD in this regard...it would be great!
senseispcc Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 Will there be one?! A Full Mission Builder?!

That would be great if it could, would solve a lot of issues with making a realistic or immersive campaign, anyone know how the RoF editor handles this kinda stuff? Mick.
No601_Swallow Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 (edited) I think Veteran66's latest update to his mini-campaign may include mission stats extracted from the mission. Hopefully it'll be possible to plug those back into the next mission in a campaign when people are working on campaigns with the finished editor. The fact that the skin viewer seems nicely done, together with the fact that they haven't rushed out a half-cocked version of the FMB (pace Senseispcc ) makes me hopeful that the FMB will be powerful and capable when it finally is released. But hey, I'm just an optimist! Edited December 30, 2014 by No601_Swallow
Juri_JS Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 As far as I can tell from my experience in RoF, the mission editor itself doesn't allow the combination of single missions into a campaign. From a technical point of view I am sure the game is capable to support such an option, thanks to the generated mission log files, but this would require some work by the developers, for example a stats function and a gui for the campaign menue and pilot profile.

Yes, this require some work by the team, right now BoS engine doesn't allow the combination of single missions into a campaign as you can see in the Veteran66's mini-campaign.

SharpeXB Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 The RoF engine obviously allows campaign creation, look at Pat Wilson. Can't BoS do the same thing?

Lupson Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 I believe it is possible to create some kind of dynamic campaign using external tools given that a) the simulation can load missions from text-based .Mission files and b) that the mission results can be parsed from the log files. In its absolutely simplest form, one could keep "campaign state" in an external system, generate a mission file given a "mission template" and campaign state, fly the mission and then update the campaign state using the report log files. And repeat until player dies or either side meets some objective set up in the campaign state. While the above sounds straightforward enough, generating believable and immersive missions at least on par with what the current BoS campaign does is probably a very complex task to undertake - especially since one at the moment would have to rely on the RoF FMB manual which describes textual outputs for game objects/commands etc. plus any .Mission files from the BoS mission builder one could get ones hands on. In the current state of BoS it would still mean loading (generated) single missions from disk but one could perhaps put the debriefing from the previous mission into the briefing of the next one etc.
3instein Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 So it sounds like the editor will only be able to make single missions and not be able to tie them together to make a campaign. Fair enough, but without the ability to name some pilots to keep alive through various missions that are packaged as a campaign it will just be the same as is now, single missions without any real meaning. It is alright doing single missions but without this function they are meaningless IMO. If you could name a pilot and try to build up some stats, the game would be a lot more interesting. Mick.
Lupson Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 3instein: The way I see it the external campaign engine would have a GUI where the player can follow up on how the campaign is going, player stats, squdron buddies (AI) stats etc. The campaign engine would use generated squadrons and their pilot/aircraft when assigning wingmen, escort flights etc to provide a "persistent" world across missions.
