Unfortunately the Stalingrad Front wasn't snow covered in August 1942. ;)

Luftflotte 4 Order of Battle  (20 November 1942) and VVS KA and PVO aviation  (Stalingrad - Don Bend area, November - December 1942) are available Appendix I & 2 of the Bergström's book ; Stalingrad, The Air Battle: 1942 through January 1943.

4) Where exactly will be your campaign, what their timing and other details of historical interest?

We'll start with "Operation Uranus" - Soviet counterattack ( launched on 19 November 1942 )  and finish with liberation of Stalingrad ( February 2, 1943 ).

Between these events you will see the surroundings of the 6th Army and the attempt of its unblocking - "Operation Winter Storm."

III./SchG 1 with Bf 109E ?/?

Afaik SchlG 1 never had a dritte Gruppe, but it did have a higher-than-usual number of Staffeln, I think it was 8 or 9. At that time, 3 Staffeln per Gruppe were standard.

edit:

I./SchG 1 with Bf 109E 47/23

47 aircraft is pretty much what you would expect for four staffeln - if I am not mistaken 12 planes per Staffel were standard at the time, later increased to 16 around '44 if memory serves me right.

The names of the staffeln are shorted name. Its a little difficult to explain but here a example because to translate it from German to Englisch

 Updated Thread with new Informations

Thanks to all that add more informations to my thread. Now its my time what I have found searching the world-wide-web. Here is a good source to see the movement/serviceable/battle ready/lost in battle Source: http://www.ww2.dk/oob/bestand/flugbew.htm

I found great informations about the Bf-110 Source: http://www.sukhoi.ru/forum/archive/index.php/t-43953.html
Great we have a date 15.09.1942  where a BF - 110 S9+FH, 2699  has a emergency landing near Gumrak, south-west of Stalingrad. Thats only 25km from Staingrad away

Now its time for some Russian Planes and here comes the confirmed Informations about very nice Russian Planes from Source: http://www.d13-th.ro/forum/online-campaign/stalingrad-info/?PHPSESSID=m6loj57ro969gkvtjuj0n90186

In The book Graf and Grislawsski by Christer Bergstrom, Vlad Antipov and Claes Sundin some references to Soviet aircraft are given which you might finf useful.

Yak-1 was flown by 4 IAP with the ace Sultan Ahmet Khan among other pilots.

The new La-5 was sent to Stalingrad and the 287 IAD with 27 IAP, 240 IAP, 247 IAP and 437 IAP at Verkhnyaya airport. Graf shot down his first two La-5 on 8 September followed by two more on 9 September. On 10 September two more fell to his guns over Stalingrad.

270 BAD flew Pe-2.

And there were P-40s:
On the 11 September Graf of III/ JG52 took off from Pitomnik, witnessed two Bf 109s from another unit being shot down by the gunners of 270 BAD Pe-2s over an industrial area of Stalingrad. Graf shot down one Pe-2 but the unit was then attacked by P-40s of 731 IAP pilots from 102 IAD. Graf damaged one P-40 at 16:09.

And I-16s:
On 14 September Graf had a fight with 629 IAP I-16s and shot down two of them early in the day.

And I-153s:
On 15 September Graf met a mixed formation of I-16 and 1-153 from 102 IAD-PVO and bounced them while preparing to attack some Ju 88s. Graf shot down one I-16, at 06.35 hours. One young German pilot was shot down and killed by another I-16. Graf shot down an I-153 a few minutes later. Later on the same mission the encountered a group of LaGG-3s and Graf shot down one of them.

And Su-2s:
On 16 Sepember Graf led eight 109s in an attack on Su-2s from 270 BAD over Stalingrad. He shot down one of the when P-40s mixed in to the fight. A P-40 shot down Graf's wing man who bailed out and landed in the Volga why he was captured by the Russians. Graf shot down a P-40 right afterwards but was again attacked and damaged by another P-40 and had to abandon the fight. Another P-40 was shot down by three other 109s when on their return flight.

On 17 September Graf claimed two Yak-1 and one LaGG-3.

on 18 September the Soviets launched the ground offensive against Kotluban with heavy air activity. More than 1/3 of the Soviet Il-2s of 228 ShAD and 291 ShAD were put out of action. 77 victories claimed by Luftwaffe for one loss, Graf shot down two LaGG-3s and one Il-2 this day.

On 19 September Graf was chasing Il-2s at low altitude over the Volga river when his 109 was hit by ground fire but he managed to return to base.

On 21 September Graf claimed three Yak-1s and an Il-2.
On 22 September an I-16 of 629 IAP was shot down by Graf.
On 25 September a fight between a group of thirty soviet fighters and a group of Ju 87s took place near Lesnaya NW of Stalingrad. Among them were probably La-5s of 239 IAP which claimed five Stukas. Graf claimed two La-5s at 14:41 and 14:46. Three of the Stukas were lost and seven damaged.

In the morning hours of 26 September Graf took of with his wing man, spotted a formation of I-153s which they attacked. Graf claimed one as his 200th victory and his wingman Wolf one. The Soviet report claimed they suffered no loss or gain in this fight. The last 3 operational I-153s in Stalingrad area was from 629 IAP on this day.

Graf was shortly after taken out of the front flying, being very exhausted, close to breaking down.

I hope the above can give some ideas around your project. At least some more Soviet planes to involve.

I can also recommend the book Graf and Grislawski A pair of Aces.

Regarding MiG-3 over Stalingrad.

In 'Soviet Combat Aircraft of the Second World War Vol 1', Gordon and Khazanov:

"When the 201st Fighter Air Division under the command of Colonel A. Zhukov was deployed near Stalingrad in the autumn of 1942, the 122nd Fighter Air Regiment remained on the Western Front because the Luftwaffe's best aircraft were operational near Stalingrad and the MiG-3 was considerable inferior to them in performance"

The above can give a reason why to question MiGs over Stalingrad.

I also checked in 'Die Jagdfliegerverbaende der Deutschen Luftwaffe 1934 bis 1945 Teil 9/II' by Prien/Stemmer/Rodeike/Bock. Even if there are claims for MiG-3 and "Mig-1" it can not be excluded that these were in fact LaGG or Yak fighters being mistakenly logged as MiGs in the victory listings.

csThor, I have not found any proof for the MiG-3 fighting over Stalingrad. The aircraft was designed for high altitude performance and hardly suitable for the kind of action around Stalingrad.

MiG-3 due to their good high altitude performance seem to have been concentrated with the Air Defense Units in the west in 1942-43 to protect in particular Moscow from Luftwaffe bomber attacks as well as warding off high altitude reconnaissance aircraft.

Half of the available MiG-3 aircraft said to have been concentrated around Moscow for defense of the capital (1).

Another fact to note is that the Il2 with rear gunner began to appear over Stalingrad. The first aircraft beeing modified from single-seater by adding a rear cockpit with a gunner. Not having any trained gunners at hand, at first technical and support crew flew as gunners. Factory built two-seater Il-2Ms started arriving in the beginning of November 1942.(2)
However one source claim that the combat debut for the Il2M was at Smolendk on 30 October 1942 in an attack on an enemy airfield.(3)

(1) Soviet Combat Aircraft of the Second World War Vol.1, Yefim Gordon and Dmitri Khazanov, p.72-73.
(2) Air War over Russia, Andrew Brookes, P.93
Stalins Falcons, Robert Jackson, P.113
(3) Il2 Stormovik in Action, Squadron/Signals publ.Hans-Heiri Stapfer.

An aircraft to add to the initial Stalingrad battle listing above is the Yak-9 which was introduced as from late December 1942 in the skies over this battle front.
The 1st Air Army on the western front received it a little earlier though.
Production started in Plant No.153 in Novosibirsk in October 1942.

Soviet Combat Aircraft of the Second World War, Vol.1, Gordon/Khazanov, P.143.
The Red Falcons, R. Jackson, P.114.

According to a french source & warning not found the source could be maybe wrong, 2,17,16,8 Air Army had the following planes on their strength on 19th of November '42:
Pe-2/Pe-3 77
Boston 60
Sb-2/Su-2 34
U-2,R-5,R-Z 20
Il-2 450
Yak1 186
Yak7B 179
La-5 11
LaGG-3 39
Hurricane 10
Summe 1066
The 102.IAD misses in this OOB, according to another source it had 88 fighters at some point of time around November'42. But that all is a bit "playing puzzle".

Units:
7'42:
150BAP (Pe-2)
434IAP
8'42:
268IAP,
228ShAP (Il2),
181IAP (Yak1)
One group of LaGG3 with 37mm cannons was tested against tanks
69ShAP,
510IAP,
287IAP (first La5's from 21.8.42 onwards)

IMO this mid-war eastern thing is really awesome gaming-wise.

For the most part probably cos the balance of forces are quite evenly matched (raw terms of machine performance).

IMHO advantage in early war and late war is slightly (or even more so) on German side, early Bf-109E and Bf-110 are outmatching Soviet fighters while later on FW-190D, TA-152 & Me-262 are better machines than anything in Soviet arsenal at the time.

Thus, 1942 and 1943 are really interesting for me.

Kudos for dev team for making most interesting eastern theatre of war first.

In "old" IL-2 I always favorited Prokhorovka, Stalingrad and Leningrad maps...

At release, but after could looks the map different. Just remember Battle of Stalingrad (13. September 1942 bis 2. February 1943)

Remember that the Yak-9 was the first soviet fighter that shot down a Me-262. The Yak-9 was comparable to or better than that of the Messerschmitt Bf 109G and Focke-Wulf Fw 190A-3/A-4.

Where did you get your information on that ? The sources I have found claim that the Lavochkin series aircraft specifically the La-7 was the only Russian fighter to ever encounter and shoot down a Me-262 for the Russian side. I might be wrong but I would like to know the source of your information and compare ?

hmmm....La7 (even La 5FN) and Yak 3 were pretty capable to counter the above mentioned.....Ofcourse Me262 was something new but had numerous problems for known reasons... Edited by Tvrdi

On March 22, 1945, a Yak-9 piloted by L.I. Sivko from 812.IAP became the first Soviet aircraft to shoot down a Messerschmitt Me 262 jet fighter. By the time the Yak-9U variant appeared in 1944, both German and Russian pilots agreed that it was the finest fighter plane flown by any party on the Eastern Front, and the Germans did anything they could to avoid fighting it.

The majority of American Airacobras reached the Soviet Union from the south, via Teheran. In November 1942 the 25th ZAP was set up at Aji-Kabul in Azerbaijan. Aircraft were assembled at Abadan, before being ferried to Aji-Kabul where they were given to their eventual end users. The P-39 would be at its most effective on the southern fronts, where it would be used by Grigori Rechkalov and Aleksandr Poykryshikin, the 2nd and 3rd ranked Soviet Aces. A limited number of aircraft probably fought at Stalingrad, but they rose to real prominence in the post-Stalingrad battle of the Kuban River. Kuban seems like the perfect scenario to satisfy all the lend-lease needs :)
Facing G-2, G-4 and Fw190s the Mk.Vb will have a hard time. Would be interesting to see how it would compare to the new domestic VVS additions, Yak1b Yak9 and La5F. I am guessing the Yak1b will dominate the horizontal plane while the La5F will be able to match the speed and climb rate of the German fighters, as well as providing enough firepower to reliably bring down 190s and bombers, which I am guessing will be an issue with the Yaks... until we get a Yak9T

Wonder if I was the only one to notice Jason saying he was expecting the P-40 to be introduced fairly soon in the last livestream?

One Luftwaffe unit I came across last night that I didn't realize was in the Stalingrad region was 4./JG 54. I was looking through one of the Classic Colours Jagdwaffe books on the Eastern Front last night, and it states that it was detached to reinforce I./JG 52 after the Soviet counteroffensive began.

guys, if someone missed, starting from this russian author of last books about stalingrad and our best expert in this theme, at my request, little more detailed writes for us about concrete series and types of planes in soviet/russian regiments...  ;) mainly, in late autumn - winter'42-43...

what interesting, i think, looks like yak-1b and planes with some changes like 1b ie "переходный тип" (it's planes at least with low gargrot, bubble top and UBS+shvak of 99-110,111 series and later, although, it's could be some planes of previous series) were not only in 31 GIAP/176 IAP, and several la-5s of 9 series and later were and in 5 GIAP, and in some other IAPs in dec-jan'43...

in other, just different series of yak-1 with m-105 PF and high gargrot, several "light" yaks of 96 serie, laggs including several planes with sh-37 of 34 serie, early series of la-5 before 9-10 series, like 0494 etc...

btw, here 3 serial numbers of la-5 from 437 IAP including , one of planes was first victory of Helmut Lipfert, how says N. Egorov...

Any recommendations / review on Fighters over Stalingrad Volume 1 yet?
...
Great, being shot down by an author is something I have always dreamt of. :D
No, actually that is pretty interesting. I hope he is a contributing member of the Russian BoS forum ;)

The Po-2 seems to have been missed in all the lists... perhaps...?

look here, fresh post by N.Egorov about mass using of po-2 in BOS, very old series of planes (including yak-1, most likely already with PF engine, according to some books, although could be PA or even P) and very early types of i-153/i-16, i think like type 5, 10, maybe and 17, similar with war at north of russia and planes in regiment of Safonov etc (last type 5 was scrapped or lost only in early'43! :))...

Shouldn't be there the La5 too? (I know we'll get that kite anyway but just for completenes ...)

sorry, what you mean? la-5 with high gargrot ("razorback") and of different series, one of main planes during BOS'42-43... personally i just tried to understand, WHICH were series exactly, because performance depends on concrete series...
