Jason_Williams Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 Hey Everyone, I have been testing our templates and an early build of the skin Viewer. I was able to create some throwback type skins similar to what I used to fly with in the original IL-2. Ah...memories of my old squadron.Took just a few minutes to create these skins with our template. I'm not the best artist and in no way are these historical paint-jobs. The viewer is capable of making some nice images as you can see. I don't know when the Skin Viewer will be ready or exactly what features will be available in the final version, but it should be similar to our ROF Skin Viewer. I'm looking forward to seeing some awesome skins from the community when we get this feature going. Jason 22
JimTM Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 Really nice Jason! I too am looking forward to seeing what the talented community artists come up with. I may even have a go at it myself. Salut!
Rjel Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 I think that would really boost some interest again. I've been looking forward to making some skins in BoS and seeing what others can do.
6./ZG26_5tuka Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 Nice skins. Hope it's not going to be too long, I really want to get into squadrom skining. Are there any limitations of the final skin viewer you can tell us about already? Like texture resolution, file size and conversion format. The reason I'm asking is that those proved to be an issue to me back in RoF and I hope to do better in BoS. 1
Feathered_IV Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 Great stuff. I love that you kicked things off with the LaGG too. I'm looking forward to Mods-on mode so I can really start getting creative. 1
Tyberan Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 What a few minutes to do these skins? this is awesome. Skins look great
LizLemon Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 Will squadron codes, aka decals be added? Have you fixed the skin bug from rof?
Jason_Williams Posted November 22, 2014 Author Posted November 22, 2014 Will squadron codes, aka decals be added? Have you fixed the skin bug from rof? No, as we've stated previously, we don't have any current plans to add decals like that. And what skin bug are you referring to? Jason
senseispcc Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 Individual numbers and personnal or squadron insignas where one of the thing that made COD incomplete because it never worked?!
Yankee_One Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 Hi Jason, there is one bad thing with your skins they are not available yet Great skins, really nice. Great seeing new skins in the future.
senseispcc Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 (edited) Making skin is nice but the point is there is until now no possibility to integrate homemade skins into the game! Edited November 22, 2014 by senseispcc
Habu Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 No, as we've stated previously, we don't have any current plans to add decals like that. And what skin bug are you referring to? Jason I think he talk about that when you look a plane, he has the default skin even if he choose a personal one, and it took a few seconds to view the personnal skin. You can easily see the problem on a track, when you jump from an airplane to another one, in external view. .
A-E-Hartmann Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 Fantastic , please release him . I can not wait anymore . Excited to see your pretty lagg3 into my viewfinder.
PA-Sniv Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 Great news! Releasing skin viewer along with Dserver & FME will bring the reviews and players BoS deserves! Cheers,
Potenz Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 No, as we've stated previously, we don't have any current plans to add decals like that. And what skin bug are you referring to? Jason Please rethink that position, not for the near future, but random numbers and squadron codes on the planes will add it a lot more of immersion to the sim. 3
79_vRAF_Friendly_flyer Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 There's not enough "like" options on this board to adequatly express my joy over this!
Matt Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 Has it been clarified anywhere by now, if it will be possible to use custom skins on mods-off servers?
Jaws2002 Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 Has it been clarified anywhere by now, if it will be possible to use custom skins on mods-off servers? The answer I got from Zak was that we'll be able to use player made skins in qmb, non official missions and "non ranked servers". Now I don't know if non ranked servers means "mods on" servers where people can modify other parts of the game as well, like aircraft mods. That would make the skins off limit for pretty much any competitive online action.

SOLIDKREATE Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 Excellent news! I can't wait to let loose on the skin templates. I'll be making schwarze No.1 - No.16 of JG51 for the Bf-109F-4 and my tiger camo Pe-2.
SharpeXB Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 Rise of Flight has the best skin system of any flight sim I've seen. The way they are made available by the developer in packs makes all the skins easily available to all players equally. It's less work to download and it means everyone has all the skins visible on multiplayer. Downloading individual skins from random sources is just impossibly difficult and time consuming. Hopefully BoS will have the same system. 2

[KWN]T-oddball Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 agreed, but if that door is shut to the point of "never open that book again" 10 planes, 20 skins per plane, double for two seasons - not gonna be 20 Gigs i gather. Especially with generic normal and bump and whatnot maps. and if you do not like how the planes look, you can do your own generic AI/random skins. how many concessions are you willing to make? what will be the breaking point before you finally scream FOUL! because they have sacrificed core elements of the sim in the name of putting time, money and resources into nonsensical gamey (unlocks/XP) aspects of the sim instead of concentrating of historical elements of the Battle of Stalingrad....i.e squadron insignia and numbers. 1
A-E-Hartmann Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 (edited) And if not,the subject is alpha viewer . Edited November 22, 2014 by A-E-Hartmann
[KWN]T-oddball Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 I haven't reached that point yet. There is worse bull going on in my life like unpaid Bills, and a doctor who billed me 250 Balls to look at my ... Dollars for two minutes - and use a scalpel for 30 seconds. That's me working two days for him working 10 minutes end-to-end. and there are other ways to scream foul. talk is cheap. Opinions do not matter. I do not forgive, nor do i forget. yikes!, time to step away from the forum please proceed to the store and purchase a 12 pack of founders double trouble then proceed to the beer cockpit (lazyboy) turn on tele put in comedy and then drink,laugh,smile....its Saturday after all.

Oh, settle down. Zero concessions. They're just getting started. Can you imagine being a developer on this project?

[KWN]T-oddball Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 Oh, settle down. Zero concessions. They're just getting started. Can you imagine being a developer on this project? settle down?....first of all let me clue you into something since is it obvious you are new, "they" are not just getting started, this is not a "new" IL2 project this is RoF: battle of Stalingrad expansion. they are using the IL-2 brand for marketing purposes i.e Rebranding Rebranding is a marketing strategy in which a new name, term, symbol, design, or combination thereof is created for an established brand with the intention of developing a new, differentiated identity in the minds of consumers, investors, and competitors. They are doing exactly what Oleg originally envisioned which was to have a stable platform (storm of war engine) and then be able to add expansions in a relatively short amount of time. (1-1.5 years) would you care to do the math from when Bos was announced to the release date... Now if you think that unlocks/XP are more important that being able to add insignia and numbers to planes that are supposed to be part of a world-war-2-flight-sim then perhaps you are the new market they are aiming for. 5
Nil Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 Nice ones, I see you use #73 I always use 72 (or 293 in racing games)

Bearcat Posted November 23, 2014 Posted November 23, 2014 Keep this thread Ot. Do not go off into personal tangents.
Wandalen Posted November 23, 2014 Posted November 23, 2014 Fantastic! Thanks for the sneak peak Jason :-)
Wulf Posted November 23, 2014 Posted November 23, 2014 (edited) Does this mean we'll be able to fly certain aspects of the game with 3rd party skins and historically correct (although perhaps not politically correct) markings on our aircraft (even though when I look at a swastika I get a sudden uncontrollable urge to form a national socialist party and attack Russia) or does this just mean we'll have access to more in-house skins? Edited November 23, 2014 by Wulf
A-E-Hartmann Posted November 23, 2014 Posted November 23, 2014 or does this just mean we'll have access to more in-house skins? I hope , I think the community is going to provide a large number of skins .
