Hans-Joachim Marseille: available skins

Recommended Posts

Hi all. Today I speak on behalf of a French colleague who asked one question in a French-speaking forum. He's looking for skins for aircraft having been flown by Hans-Joachim Marseille. Even if Marseille served in two theaters of operations that aren't at our disposal in the Great Battles series (the English Channel and North Africa) are there any skins of Marseille's historical aircraft?

There are two of Marseille's skins already present in the sim by default.
The Bf-109 E7 and Bf-109 F4 both have 4k skins plainly titled "Marseille", one from the Battle of Britain and the other from Africa respectively.

There may very well be custom Marseille skins with slightly different schemes floating around but if so I haven't encountered them.
If the two default skins aren't what you're looking for I'd be happy to make an alternate version if you can find a detailed scheme of one.

Oh, do they show historical swastikas, because that's one point I forgot to mention: this guy is lookig for fully historical skins only, with no cropped swastikas...

That would be lovely... what about going back to both the Great Battles skins and the Cliffs of Dover skins... and simply modify the vertical stabiliser so that the swastika becomes fully visible? (visible on the skin, not on the forums, please).

They have the faux swastikas like the default skins do unfortunately.

Unfortunately we don't have access to the skins included in game outside of their .dds formats so modifications like that aren't really possible.

I've spent a fair amount of time making Bf-109 skins however, and could pretty easily make a Marseille model such as this one in a few hours if you would like:

There's a downloadable mod in the mod section that puts swastikas on all default skins so your problem is easily solved (I run it myself and works excellently).

Yes please! It's not really for me, but the other guy would very happy if you did that!

Otherwise, one Mr "kerlir" already answered on the other forum, the forum in French, and posted one link to a skin for this very same F-4 Skins de H-J MARSEILLE - Check-Six Forums (checksix-forums.com)

Is that you, Ram399?

Why not... (thank you). Where, exactly?

That's not me but that is the same skin, and it looks to be for a Great Battles F4, so that should hopefully work out.

That's great, thank you so much. On Marseille skins in Cliffs of Dover... any thoughts?

If I'm not mistaken that skin is for IL-2 cliffs of dover, 109's skin are similar in both sims

I've only ever skinned for Great Battles, but the layout for the 109 seemed to generally match so I just assumed it was.

Since I don't have much to do currently I think I'll give Yellow 14 a shot.

Look at the spinner dome part. The skins for 109 are almost the same in both sims (not sure why)

Marseille once ignored an order to turn back from a fight when outnumbered by two to one, but seeing an Allied aircraft closing on his wing leader, Marseille broke formation and shot the attacking aircraft down. Expecting congratulations when he landed, his commander was critical of his actions, and Marseille received three days of confinement for failing to carry out an order. Days later, Marseille was passed over for promotion and was now the sole Fähnrich in the Geschwader. This was a humiliation for him, suspecting that his abilities were being suppressed so the squadron leaders could take all the glory in the air.

Shortly afterwards, in early October 1940, after having claimed seven aerial victories all of them while flying with I.(Jagd)/LG 2 Marseille was transferred to 4. Staffel of Jagdgeschwader 52.

The Bf109 E-7 (wrk.nr. 4091) crashed on the beach is supposed to be Marseille's aircraft of the 28th September 1940 and clearly shows a White 7 so that is the one I have depicted. I was hoping to find more than the famous Desert War yellow 14 but haven't found any more photos so far. The Spanish war symbol was on various E-7 models I came across of his aircraft but I wonder if it was only used to mark the aircraft of veterans of that campaign. Marseille did not fly in Spain.

Thank you Flowbee, thank you so much.

Those of you showing some interest in the skin for Marseille's JG27 number 14 can download a modified version of the official skin in "Desert Wings - Tobruk", thus a skin for "Cliffs of Dover", here:

Same skin... but showing swastikas.

EDIT: oh... just another one, slightly modified (I'm not sure this one is historical):

Hello again Flowbee. I really thank you for your help, but I got two files:

1. Bf109E7_Hans-Joachim Marseille_4k v3.dds

2. download_manager_207759.exe

What am I supposed to do with that?

You accidentally loaded something from the mediafire web site so delete download_manager_207759.exe - no idea what that is. The other file .dds is the skin which needs to be dropped into the appropriate skins folder of your game.

Took a bit longer than expected, I had to ask myself the question "If I were sand, where would I go?"
The answer turned out to be almost everywhere.

Anyhow, here's an uncensored version of Marseille's Bf-109 F4, Yellow 14, from around February of 1942:

IL 2 GB skins all have the .dds extension.

I've never done skins for Cliffs of Dover but I assume they also stick to one file type.

This is the included skin from the game just given some extra texture and Haken Kreuz. I also modified the Alpha to give more realistic reflections. I have come across another version of a Marseille 109 that has no red rudder and the sand camo only comes halfway down the fuselage sides. It is an original photograph and seems to have less (no ?) kills on the tail fin. Looking again I think this might be Ram399's version just that the details have been obscured...  only thing is that red and black usually look the same on B/W photographs so maybe no red rudder on this one. Look at the rudder tab which looks black. There is the faintest hint of lightening in rows which just might be the missing kills marked in yellow. Very tenuous though.

As far as I remember the Clod game has .bmp files for the skins. Same as the old IL2 game perhaps? Either way they will no doubt be completely different in terms of how the sections have been cut up for skinning. The .dds skins are for the BoX series.

Marseille 109

In doing a bit of research on Marseille's aircraft I found several conflicting paint schemes, all of which were Bf-109 F4s from early to mid 1942.
I don't recall hearing any stories about him burning through planes left and right but he seems to have had quite the variety, I also found no real consensus on the proper color for the under cowling.  While Osprey has all the North African 109s featured without the yellow cowlings, a number of paintings and photographs I found had the opposite, so I wasn't quite sure which way to go.

From Osprey Aircraft of the Aces: Bf-109 Aces of North Africa and the Mediterranean

Edit: I did a bit more research and decided to adjust the skin some.  The yellow cowling has been removed and the base coat of blue paint has been darkened to a more accurate shade.

I found some more photos and an image that shed some more light on variants. First the tail section without red and obscured kill markings from the photo in my earlier post.

The small 14 shown on the ingame skin. It is interesting that the yellow 14 is actually much darker than the white of the black cross outline - possibly because of the intense sunlight. White and yellow are usually very close in B/W.

The red tail version. See how the red actually shows up as black as seen in the red rudder tab from earlier but also matches the black of the Haken Kreuz.
