Muliplayer Servers for VR?

Recommended Posts

S!

Having recently got back into Il2 since buying an Oculus Rift S and playing SP using the excellent PWCG tool, I find myself getting a little tired of the relatively-limited AI and thus was considering MP.

Given the relatively-limited spotting in VR and the comparative situational awareness discrepancies between VR and whatever the opposite of VR is(!), are there any VR-only servers or virtual squadrons out there?

High fps helps a great deal in spotting and reducing how often you get bounced. VRNeckSafer is also a really useful tool if you have a fixed gaming chair and/or an older neck.

Flying in MP it also helps to have the attitude that every time you get shot down you are experiencing just a little bit that aspect of history, and you are contributing to someone else’s enjoyment of the game 🙂

I must qualify for a PhD in that discipline, with a special interest/expertise in Polish history.

Indeed.

Been there in the earlier iterations of Il2 MP (we're talking 15 years ago) either flying alone or with virtual JG52.

Problem is, it can get a little disheartening doing MP alone getting bounced by players with the skill (and patience) to get bags of altitude, and a virtual sqn. involves committing to sqd. sessions, which doesn't always work with real life.

Which MP servers would you say are the most 'forgiving' for MP newbs? Ideally one that uses comms (which I appreciate is massively unhistorical).

J5 FlugPark is the premier MP server for PVP right now. No SRS, but there is a great discord with people willing to wing up. The best days are Sunday afternoon and Thursday evening (eastern US time), although there are often still players online that can make for some pretty good fights on other times. For low population times, it has AI spawns in the middle, which drop off once more players join in. There's a few other servers that focus on PVE, like Zoo Wings, although I can't really speak to them as a mostly PVP player myself.

Yeah, I've noticed spotting in VR is roughly the same as regular flat screens. Usually a bit better, sometimes a bit worse, but mostly about the same. IDing the target can be slightly worse, mostly about the same, still plenty good for combat. VR NeckSafer has been a real life-saver, too. I haven't seen any particular need for VR-only servers, it has been just as competitive as flat screens.

I am in the unfortunate spot of being bored by the AI in SP but barely competent in MP. It helps that I don't bring any ego into MP, and I'm frankly not very competitive-minded anyway - I would have made a terrible fighter pilot in real life.

I spend most of my flying in CombatBox and Finnish Virtual Pilots, both highly competitive servers that also often have new folk there, with varying degrees of patience or annoyance from the experten. Those two servers are usually the most populated, too, which is why I fly them. I highly recommend FlugPark for WWI, as Gascan recommended.

I have the most fun flying (and frequently dying) with a local friend of mine on Discord. I prefer SRS, though, and if I find someone struggling with a plane and they are on SRS, since I am in VR I can't offer any guidance in chat. Instead I will guide them into an SRS channel and spawn into the same plane next to them, and share what little I know to help us both try to survive long enough to return to base because of bingo fuel.

Do wing up :) . No sane squadron will turn you back for something like not coming to squadron sessions these days (if they do, please tell them they are insane from me). Squadrons I know are all about the company, leaning on experienced pilots, not dieing alone and having a good laugh in what otherwise would be a tense moment. The stuff like trainings and squadron evenings are there, but most folks seem to remember it's a just a game in the end.

(BTW, unless you have strong leaning towards the Entente types only, Jasta 2 is always recruiting ;). ).

Very true. This is the reason that lead me into seeking to join a squadron, when I still was a total newb pilot, having no idea of even how to manage my engine. I joined Jasta 2 and the result was that after 10 years I am still here enjoying the game.

My advise is what J2_Trupobaw said: Join a group. if you do not want, or cannot commit to the responsibilities of being a squadron member, just join the Discord channel of the Flugpark server (the address is in the server description) and ask other people if you can join them. Or you can join our channel (you see it in my signature) just to get the feeling of what it is to fly with wingmen and maybe learn one or two things.

The exhilaration offered in MP cannot be compared to any campaign or single-player mission.

Too true! I tried two missions of the Cambrai Offensive campaign, and it just isn't the same as MP. The missions seemed well planned and executed, and I really enjoyed reading the in-depth mission descriptions, but it didn't scratch the itch. I find it far more interesting when organizing a flight to escort the photo recon mission, then fighting off a pack of skilled pilots and sacrificing my life so the recon can limp home with shredded wings and a beat-up engine to finish the mission. Crossing the front lines, knowing that live opponents are out there, hunting you, and only your skill and your teammates will get you through is a more nerve-wracking experience than any number of predictable AI planes. I think there's a bit more personal ownership of things like recon and bombing missions in MP than in SP, and therefore a bigger sense of accomplishment when you succeed together with your wingmen.

I haven't joined any squadrons/jastas because I'm going back to a sea-going command soon, which means months on end away from my simpit and the internet. I still hop on discord and have found welcome with both the jastas/squadrons, and random people in the voice channels. This makes flying so much more enjoyable.

People go MIA real life reasons all the time, only to resurface later, and nobody bats an eye. Whole squadrons go off the radar for years and then come back as if nothing happened. The community is quite old now and has seen everything. Don't limit your experience because you expect other people to have expectations :)

WW2 IL-2 is a bit miserable in VR, as you're at a disadvantage ranging from moderate to gigantic depending on the hardware you're running and probably the pecularities of your headset. I find that the colours on the aircraft are so washed out once you get more than 50-ish metres away that identification can prove very difficult. The high speed of aircraft passing each other nose-to-nose is also a big problem for IDing if your reprojection is on, and it's more likely to be on at the times that you really need to ID quickly.

Thankfully all of this is much less of an issue in Flying Circus. The aircraft have more recognisable silhouettes, dramatically more obvious paintjobs at a distance, and the closing speeds are slower enough that even if reprojection is on you won't see any ghosting.

The freedom to move your head around is a real boon in the open cockpits as the ludicrous head position limits in the WW2 aircraft aren't an issue either.

Flying Circus absolutely shines in VR, so if you're wanting to fly multiplayer in VR there really is no better place.
