So nothing has changed

Recommended Posts

I have just returned to IL2 after a long time and set up a quick mission a Pfalz vs SE5a and the SE5a just did not want to fight he just ran away even when I shot at him at close range what can I say. Sorry I may upset a few but how long has this sim being going and  nothing has changed NO more of my pension from me. And please do not say go online I did not buy to go online, 76 and played so many sims and this has the worst ai of all.

Maybe you scared him away? Why don't you tell me what the AI setting was and why don't you record a track so we can look at it. Or Maybe something is amiss in the mission logic which actually dictates a lot of what you consider the "AI'.

How many Quick fights did you perform? Just one?

Also, very worth while to try some of the scripted campaign missions or some PWCG missions, mission settings play a ton into how the AI behaves,  the QMB AI tends to be pretty uninspiring compared to how they act in missions.

I will also point out that the AI has a bit of understanding of BnZ now, so AI SE5s and Spads will attempt to extend away from you rather than just turn and let you beat them. In my co-op PWCG campaign with friends I've found I have to turn away from them and lure them back in so I can take another swing at them as they (rightly) out-run me and aren't going to play to my strengths. If you fly against a Ace camel, you'll find him maneuvering against you much differently.

No changes in the AI? In the last year, the AI has come very far. It is a work in progress. To call it the the worst is a misnomer. As Jason said, recording a track and reporting it goes a long way.

I would urge you to reconsider this as the AI is never going to live up to human players. Just food for thought.

Asking someone to reconsider their thoughts is a perfectly normal thing to propose if he is unhappy with his current options when others exist.

I spend 99% of my time on Finnish now.

edit:

What other servers have decent AI?

If I was in a SE5 and I got attacked by an Pfalz, I would run away every time.

The SE5 can't out turn the Pfalz, but it can out run it. The best strategy is to not turn, extend away and then rejoin the fight once you have a better position.

I'm no fan of the AI, but in this case, the SE5 is doing everything right.

Nothing has improved? In the old days the SE5a would always have engaged in a turn fight, which was extremely silly. So this behavior you are seeing is definitely an improvement. And if you want to 'seal club' some AI planes for fun then set the AI level to 'low'.

I just do not recognise the picture that you paint here.  I feel sorry that this is how you have experienced and viewed things.  I would like to suggest that you try and explore this wonderful simulation with a fresh and positive head on when you are having a good day.  I think it is a great shame that you have posted the above because in my view Jason and the team are the very best.  I genuinely hope that you can find a positive experience with this simulation in the future and post about it because I believe you will find that a lot of passion, imagination, research, time and love has gone into producing this flight simulation.  Good luck for the future and I hope things get better for you.

Happy landings,

So far, in co-ops, I've not seen the AI do any of their old "that's just BS" malarkey. The best bit is the standard quality of the AI pilots perfectly matches what I've read in numerous LW pilot memoirs (eastern front). On occasion I've had my work seriously cut out trying to deal with ace pilots (gunboat vs more than one I-16).

Two great things about this community appear in this thread:

1 - the DEVELOPER responded to the OP's complaint almost immediately. That is rare.

2 - everyone's responses to the OP are relatively civil. Also rare.

I like it here.

You must've come from that "other" sims forums 😂  It's all good here man, honest feedback is actually welcome here and it won't be dismissed with a snide "THANKS".... bring it in man...bring it in

Try PWCG: it totally change the SP experience. Obviously the AI is the same, but the air battles are more realistic than in stock campaign generator.

One outstanding mission today. Me and my bro had just taken off, he spots contacts way behind. I figured they must be friendlies, as they were coming from near our base. He keeps an eye on them, says they're closing fast, I turn us into them, three P-40s boom past. We shoot them down, I'm almost out of cannon, Pablo has plenty left, we continue on.
Over the front we get bounced by two Hurricanes. I damage one, Pablo finishes both off. I'm now out of ammo, Pablo has a bit left, we decide to RTB. Ten minutes later, base in sight and preparing to land and watching five Sturmies passing by below, we get bounced by the escort (three Laggs). There follows ten minutes of dragging them around the airfield for the AA, Pablo gets one, flak gets another, third runs for it. We both land and "WOW!!!". 🤩

It's actually very realistic and getting better...the biggest shortcomings are with command and control or the lack thereof. The difference between online and sp is more the even number and equal altitude that engagements take place at. It also still goes for too many head ons.
