TOBRUK 1940 AIR WAR - TEAM FUSION & ITALIANWING

Recommended Posts

Regarding the crashes, I did not have any during the event but when watching the track from that one flight when almost all of the blenheim pilots had CTD I have CTD while watching this track. No idea what went wrong but it sure looks like something went wrong with the game.

Anyway here are some picture from the first Blenheim raid.

One always learns something new: didn't know Blenheims carried bombs as external loads! Anyway referring to crashes I got one and on one instance I was alone where there should have been a flight of Blenheims and there was a lone Blenheim floating in midair like a balloon with slight nose down attitude and without moving an inch. Else than that I had a great time

TOBRUK 1940 AIR WAR - TEAM FUSION & ITALIANWING
SATURDAY February 20th h 21:00 Rome Time ( 20:00 GMT)

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND AND DETAILED BRIEFING

Mission 2:   "BUQ BUQ"
I° Sollum Battle - Lybia .
13 September 1940 (Historical)

"On 13 September 1940, the  Italian 1st Division CC.NN. "March 23" recapture Forte Capuzzo and a bombing hit Musaid, just beyond the Egyptian border.
Artillery fire and bombing began on the barracks (which was empty) and on the Sollum airfield, raising a cloud of sand.

When the sand fell, the Italian army could be spotted, ready to advance against the British cover forces formed by the 3rd Coldstream Guards Company. The Italians advanced along the coast with two divisions  behind a screen of motorcyclists, tanks, motorized infantry, and artillery.
The Italian units were an easy target for artillery and aircraft, however, the 1st Libyan Division "Sibelle" soon occupied the Sollum barracks and continued towards the city port, and subsequently heading along the coast towards Buq-Buq.

On the inland plain, an Italian advance towards Halfaya Pass was slowed by a force composed of the 3rd Company Coldstream Guards, a platoon of Northumberland Fusiliers and artillery.

They held the position until they were forced to retreat by the arrival of further Italian reinforcements.

In the night, two columns from the 2nd Libyan Division "Pescatori", the 63rd Division "Cirene" and the "Maletti" Group, from Musaid, and the 62nd "Marmarica" Division, from Sidi Omar, converged on the pass.

During the day that followed, Italian units began to descend from the pass, towards other Italian forces advancing from Sollum. Troops from the 11th Hussar Regiment, the 2nd Fusiliers Brigade and the 1st Regiment Royal tanks slowed down the maneuvers of the Italians again.

The British retreated to Alam Hamid on 15 September and Alam el Dab the following day, attempting to inflict maximum casualties and damaging the road behind them as much as possible..."

HISTORICAL NOTE: "If you asked me... what does the defeat of the 10th Italian Army in Libya represent more..."?
I would answer: this Order". (Gen. Porro)

War aviation in Libya was grouped together in the V Squadra Aerea led by General Felice Porro.

In the reports from Historical Diary of the Supreme Command he wrote about a "weird function"
for the air force in Libya: the anti-tank role.

The troops of the Regio Esercito didn't have efficient guns against medium tanks and
heavy enemies (and they didn't even have armor-piercing shells).

The only solution found by the High Commands of Rome was to give
directives to the air squadrons stationed in Libya to "cooperate in a manner
profitable with the ground forces in anti-tank function"...

🇮🇹  REGIA AERONAUTICA MISSION BRIEFING

Date: 16th September 1940

Time: 07:40 AM

Weather Conditions: Clear

Wind Velocity: 1 m / s from SE

🇮🇹  ITALIAN AIR MISSION: "Support your advanced tank columns"
TARGETS (For N°4 Victory Points):
- Fort and Garrison in the area of Quabr el Ab'ag (M11,8)
- Sidi el Barrani Harbor - avio-petrol barges (O13,4)
- RED-TANKS-1: start 07:40 from Sidi El Barrani Fort
- RED-TANKS-2: start 07:40 from Sidi El Barrani Fort

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

SITUATION:
The advance continues successfully, on the whole frontline, the airport of Buq-Buq is behind us, we are fighting for the village.
The attack will continue on three fronts:

a) The NORTH group divisions. will have the task of conquering the village of Buq-Buq, and continue and continue to chase enemies on the run (towards Sidi-El-Barrani).
b) The CENTER group divisions after taking Sawani el-Quascir airport will continue to North (Nimbeiwa).
c) The SOUTH group divisions will enter deep into the desert behind enemy lines and after taking the airport of Habata, they will continue to the Southern airport of Sidi-el-Barrani (Bir-el-Molla).

The supply truck columns will follow the tank columns at a safe distance, so at the moment we won't have "light" vehicles near the front.

The task of our air force will be to STRIKE the retreating enemy columns and provide support to our tanks as they advance to East.
Any fortifications, artillery positions and minefields must be attacked by our Cr.42 and Br.20.
Once the bombs are dropped, the Cr.42 will join the G.50 to protect the tanks from possible enemy attacks.
Our G.50s are certainly our best aircraft, but only few. They need to be used with care!

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
ATTENTION:
Before attacking any targets on the ground identify them, remembering that:
- if they are "light" means they are probably enemy columns in retreat
- The enemy does not seem to have "heavy" vehicles near the front line

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Home Airfield: Amseat 2

- 78a Sq - Cr.42 - Brutus2

PS: you are certainly our fastest fighters, but beware that there are only 24 G.50, and that only 8 G.50 can fly at the same time.

Home Airfield: Gambut N.2
- 191a Sq - Br.20 - Gabriel 1
Orders:
- Attack any retreating enemy columns, fortifications or minefields
- Attack the Sidi el Barrani West airfield.
With your load of bombs you will be able to wreak havoc among the enemy ranks.

🟥  ROYAL AIR FORCE MISSION BRIEFING

Date: 16th September 1940

Time: 07:40 AM

Weather Conditions: Clear

Wind Velocity: 1 m / s from SE
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

🟥  BRITISH AIR MISSION: Defend your withdrawing Columns. Bomb the advanced Italian Columns.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Situation:
The Italians have occupied Buq-Buq, and are preparing to attack Sidi El Barrani.
At the moment our columns are retreating both on the coast, on the plateau, and inland.
Our armored vehicles are rushing towards the frontline, but we currently have no tanks. Only armored cars and trucks.
Troops are faster, but it is necessary to delay, as much as possible, the advance of the Italian General Graziani, using all our Air Force which is qualitatively superior.
Our coastal airports have already fallen into the hands of the enemy, so the order is to move to Sidi el Barranni.
After the dogfights against Italians there are few Hurricanes I-FB/Trop left. They must be used with care!

Our Hurricane I-FB / Trop are certainly our best aircraft, but we only have 24 units available. They must be used with care!

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

ATTENTION:
1) Before attacking any targets on the ground identify them, remembering that:
- if they are "light" vehicles it means that they are our columns in retreat
- we do not have "heavy" vehicles near the front line

NOTE: these Statistics are experimental and only for reference.
They simulate the Pilots Report at the end of a mission. They could be not accurate and present still some "ghost kills".

Also if it is not our Scope to present Single Performances because in an Historical Scenario the important is the Team Result , as experiment, we introduced also Single Pilot Statistics.
The Order takes count of the number of Death, penalising  mortal events in order to encouraging Pilots to have a prudent behaviour (remaining "alive" as more as possible) like was in reality.

c) The SOUTH divisions group (Cirene and Marmarica divisions): Bir-Rabia (Habrata). Task to continue after orders, moving on the rocky desert ridge (towards the railway in Misheifa-Marsa-Matruch).

While waiting to continue, the Divisions are reorganizing, entrenching in defensive positions, using also explorers, to test the enemy consistency.

The Genio is building a paved road from Sollum, and an aqueduct too.

The task of our Air Force will be to hit the concentrations of enemy troops and protect our big units in reorganization.
Any fortifications, artillery positions and tanks must be attacked by our Cr.42 and Br.20.
Once the bombs are dropped, the Cr.42 will join the G.50 to protect our strongholds from possible enemy attacks.
Our G.50s are certainly our best aircraft, but they are few. They need to be used with thrift!

ATTENTION:
Before attacking any targets on the ground identify them, remembering that:
- OUR armored troops are attested in the strongholds or they are heading East.
- the field is controlled by OUR self-supporting mobile columns, but without tanks.
- the road costrution sites and the port of Sollum and Sidi el Barrani are possible targets.

TARGETS:
- AIRFIELD of Bir el Malla South (Q9,4)

- British troops (8th Hussars) (R11,5

- Enemy columns of vehicles - start Bir Basur Airport (P2,6) at 08:40 - to Bir el Malla South Airfield (Q9,4) at 12:1

- The road building sites (M12,8)
- HARBOR of Sollum (H13,5)

Could Our Lady of Loreto accompany you!

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

SITUATION:
The Italians have occupied Sidi el Barrani, and now they are East of the town.
It is not clear why they stopped but at present this is the situation, which allows us to rest and reorganize the troops.

Our armored vehicles are moving towards the front, and in particular the new Matilda Tanks, as well as some units from Palestine.
We are increasing the numbers of our troops, but we remain outnumbered: there are approximately 150.000 enemy soldiers. The Italian entrenchment activities need to be delayed as much as possible, using our Air Force which is qualitatively superior.

Our coastal airports have already fallen into the hands of the enemy, and we can only take off from Marsa-Matruh or from southern airports in the Marmarian desert, which must be kept at all costs.

Some Hurricanes reinforcement arrived, but they must be used with care!

ATTENTION:
1) Before attacking any target on the ground, identify it, remember that:
- if they are fast vehicles it means that they are our columns retreating to the East
- the Italian tanks are entrenched in their fields, they move only with mobile armed columns
2) It seems that they are building a road in the middle of the desert (to be verified). Attack the construction sites.
