Battle of Bomber Command (Night Fighters)

Recommended Posts

*JUST FOR FUN*

Battle of Bomber Command - Battle over the Night skies of Germany, between the RAF and Luftwaffe (+ P-61 for fun)

Plane Set:

Allies (RAF / USAAF):

Avro Lancaster /or  Vickers Wellington     - * I know they don't do bombers but it is just for fun (maybe a Vickers Wellington=it has 2 engines)

Mosquito NF.II or NF.XVII                                  - * Made from the incoming FB.VI

P-61A             - * Would fit the battle of Bodenplatte perfectly as it 's best success was at the Battle of the Bulge (I know the P-61 is introduced later)

Axis (Luftwaffe):

Bf110 G-4 Night Fighter                                                                   - * Made from existing Bf110G-2

Ju88C-6 Night Fighter                                                                      - * Made from the incoming Ju88C-6a

He219

Map:

Uses the Existing Bodenplatte Map and the Incoming Normandy Map (Mosquito's during the Baby Blitz)

Single Player / Multiplayer:

Single Player:

Luftwaffe: For single player I'm imagining where bombers spawn in at different intervals with different amounts or with a bomber stream. The Kammhuber line and airborne radar would be used to find the targets.

RAF/P-61:  Would follow the bombers loosely and once over Germany a random number of enemy night fighters would spawn, which you would have to find and shoot down before they shoot your bomber down

Campaigns: Probably a NJG1 campaign

422nd NFS campaign, during battle of the bulge (half the missions are night intruder missions)

Mosquito night fighter Campaign - "escorting" night bombers/ defending Britain with the new channel map

Multiplayer: Could be a dedicated night fighter server, like Berloga duel and dogfight but for night fighters. *Other servers with objectives wont really work because there isn't much to do ground attack wise with night fighters. It is almost all intercepts and air to air.

Extra Notes:

The Hurricane we now have would also be used for intruder missions (historically accurate)

The A-20 could also be converted/used as a night fighter or night intruder (P-70 night fighter/historically accurate)

iirc engines are not the issue with bombers (we had four-engined planes in RoF), it's crew stations. If any big heavy bomber was to come the Lanc is the most realistic one I can see coming, as it only has three turrets (compared to the B-17's 9 positions)

My suggestion for a pack like this would be to also include a German bomber, as Germany did do night raids over England into '44

But they do? As you said yourself we have the A-20, plus the He-111 H-6, He-111 H-16, Ju-88 A-4, Pe-2 series 35, Pe-2 series 87, and Pe-2 series 110.

The Hurricane was used as a night intruder?

Night Reaper is one of the stock skins that came with the Hurri.

From wikipedia:

No. 1 Squadron was relocated to

RAF Tangmere in West Sussex and assigned a new role: night intruder sorties over France. These were missions by single aircraft to shoot down German bombers over their own airfields. Their Hurricanes lacked radar so the sorties were made only with a full moon. They were dangerous missions, demanding both navigation and flying skills, excellent vision and great courage.[1]

A Junkers Ju 88 fighter-bomber. Between April and June 1942 Kuttelwascher shot down two Ju 88s and damaged another three.

The Squadron was then operating the Hawker Hurricane Mk IIc, painted black for night flying. Each aircraft was equipped with two 45-gallon under-wing auxiliary tanks[4] that extended its airborne time to three to 3½ flying hours and gave a range of about 900 miles (1,400 km). Armament was two Hispano-Suiza 20mm cannon on each wing, but with only 91 rounds of ammunition. This was enough for only about nine seconds' firing time.

Kuttelwascher's Hawker Hurricane IIc was serial number BE581 and carried the code letters "JX-E". It also carried a personal emblem of a yellow scythe with a red banner emblazoned "Night Reaper". Kuttelwascher had the greatest number of successful strikes of any night intruder.[1]

On the night of 1/2 April 1942 Kuttelwascher scored his first victories as a night intruder by shooting down one Junkers Ju 88 fighter-bomber and damaged a second, both near Melun. On the night of 16/17 April he shot down a Dornier Do 217 bomber near Saint-André-de-l'Eure. His next victories were a Do 217 and a Ju 88, both near Rouen-Boos. On the night of 30 April/1 May he shot down a Do 217 near Rennes and a Heinkel He 111 bomber off the coast near Dinard. On the night of 4/5 May near St-André Kuttelwascher shot down three He 111s within four minutes.[1]

A Dornier Do 217 bomber. Between April and July 1942 Kuttelwascher shot down seven Do 217s and damaged another three.

On the night of 2/3 June Kuttelwascher shot down a Do 217 off Dunkirk. The next night near St-André he shot down two He 111s and a Do 217 and damaged a second Do 217. On the night of 21/22 June, again near St-André, he shot down an Ju 88 and damaged a second.[1] On the night of 28/29 June 1942 Kuttelwascher shot down a Do 217E-4 of VII/Kampfgeschwader 2 at Trévières in Normandy, killing all the crew.[5] On the night of 1/2 July near Dinard he shot down two Do 217s and damaged a third.[1]

In three months No. 1 Squadron had destroyed 21 enemy aircraft. Of these Kuttelwascher had shot down 15 and damaged another five. For this he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and news media nicknamed him the Czech Night Hawk.[1]

@216th_CatYeah that is what I was thinking. Just make a night intruder skin for the Hurricane and have it fly intruder missions. It would be the most historically accurate as of right now because we don't have a radar, and neither did they. Basically just fly from a base in England with the new Normandy map, and fly to a Luftwaffe bomber airfield, and try to shoot the bombers as they land.

The A20 could be used the same just without shooting the bombers and just be bombing the airfields and trains, as they did historically

@=621=Samikatz, I would have added a German Bomber, however we pretty much have all the ones that were used. The Ju88 and He111 for the heavy bombers, and for the Jabo attacks the Fw190 and the Me410 is coming with Normandy. Maybe the only one left is the Do17, which would be cool because like the Ju88 it could also be a bomber and a night fighter.

@[Pb]Cybermat47, yeah that's why I added a Wellington, it has 2 engines (although I know now that is not the issue) but It probably has a lot less crew positions. The Lancaster and Halifax would be cool, but I dont really see them ever adding them, unless they specifically do this night fighter dlc. Otherwise they will probably do a B-25 or B-26 to make fans happy. Also are the turrets the limitations or are the number of crew slots the limitations? Like if they did a heavy bomber would they have to model the bombardier and navigator and radio operator positions, or just the gunner positions. Because modeling the navigation station room and radio operator room also probably takes lots of time. But yeah I see where you are coming from

The A20 we have in the game is an soviet modified A20B, A20B is different then the Boston III that the RAF used.

For german bombers there still is the Do217 (Several variants), Ju188A and E, Ju88S and the He177, He177 has several turrets (like B24) so that might be unlikely though.

There are also torpedo variants of the Ju88, Ju188 and Do217 that still could be done seperatly so plenty of choice for german bombers.

@ww2fighter20, yeah i could see the Do17 / Do217 in the sim someday, hopefully in a battle of bomber command title, as they had both roles as a bomber and night fighter.

Sorry for assuming we were done with German bombers, I was just generalizing that the main ones are done, besides the Do17/Do217.

I'm not much of an axis player so I dont know much about German bombers, just the main ones.

Do17 and Do217 would have to be produced separately, while they look similar (like typhoon and tempest) they actually are different aircraft.

They could make the Do217E (Bomber) and either seperate or if possible as modification make the Do217J (Nightfighter) which was based on the E.
