Kaboom! Tallboy bomb detonated

Recommended Posts

Few hours ago, the Tallboy bomb was detonated underwater in Świnoujście (Swinemunde), Poland. This was one of the bombs dropped by No.617 Squadron "The Dambusters" on the 16th of April 1945. The target was a pocket-battleship Lutzow. There were no direct hits by Tallboy in the battleship, however, she got two direct hits of small bombs. One Tallboy exploded nearby the ship. That was enough to heavily damage her. The bomb was found last year during some works in the port channell.

Another YT file, showing the bomb: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qnr3Uf_Nnrg

What a waste. Couldn't we have had it back? Guy Fawkes night is less than a month away and the poor old country's on its uppers - we could have made a lot of fireworks with that!

Yeah those arrogant British 😬

One has to be fair! They tried it several times with much smaller bombs before going in with the big sticks! One might doubt the FAA/RAF choose that way having the undisturbed sleep of the Norwegian ladies in mind. Anyhow, observant Norwegian females had a chance to adapt in advance - one can't ask for more from a gentleman at war.

Still at a loss as to a) how it survived a 650-750mph impact virtually intact and b) came to rest nose up (presumably it may have at some stage been dragged back up into that position deliberately or otherwise (??)

"do stand close enough to see the bang unless you cant. And not in groups of more than 6. Unless we decide to blow it up in Liverpool in which case not in any groups at all unless you are standing within 1/2 mile in which case it wont matter anyway but you should still try to avoid mixing your remains with the bodyparts of other households. And wash your hands and wear a mask.....and a helmet....unless you cant".

and coutesy of wiki - apparently the last tallboy (albeit just the warhead of an american made version and adapted into the BLU-82 Radar guided weapon ) was dropped in 1969 during the Vietnam War at the battle of Hamburger Hill to clear trees for a landing zone. Who'd have thunk it.

I can’t help thinking that all our politicians could benefit from a spot of bomb disposal work😀

lets have a think -- keep it ticking for 2 months longer than the experts advise then perhaps start taking by off the fins to see if that makes it less dangerous....

TBF its very easy to pick fault in the response to Covid.............

.................Oh, are you waiting for a "but"
