Joystick issues permanently affecting keyboard commands?!

Recommended Posts

I’ve had a Saitek X-55 Rhino joystick/throttle HOTAS for some years now and, after some initial teething problems, it’s served me reasonably well.

However, and I believe that since the most recent “IL-2 Sturmovik : Great Battles” update, I’ve had problems with my X-55 HOTAS which now APPEARS to have affected the flight sim itself!!

Let me explain:

- after having the problems, as described above, I decided to uninstall the software and driver for my X-55 HOTAS and ‘IL-2 Sturmovik : Great Battles’

- after downloading and reinstalling ‘IL-2 Sturmovik : Great Battles’ I tested the ‘machine guns’ - that was by pressing the RAlt + Space keys on the keyboard - it worked perfectly, firing a burst of machine gun fire for us long as I held down RAlt + Space keys.

- I then downloaded and installed the software and drivers for my X-55 HOTAS

- I then programmed RAlt + Space to the trigger on the X-55 joystick (usin* the X-55 HOTAS profile software).

- Saved the settings on the X-55 HOTAS and restarted my PC

 - Booted up ‘IL-2 Sturmovik : Great Battles’ and set up a Quick Mission

- Pressed the joystick trigger and there was an audible click ... but nothing else  - funnily enough, one can see the firing button on the joystick, on the screen/in the sim being depressed, but no firing!

- I then tried the key combination on the keyboard (RAlt + Space) and, again, no firing but the same as with the joystick ie a click, depression of the gun button, but no burst of machine gun fire.

- I then uninstalled the X-55 HOTAS software and drivers, restarted my PC and then again tried the key combination (RAlt + Space)  - no difference - the keys NOW don’t get the machine gun to fire!

- Changed the key for ‘Machine Guns’ (in “Key Settings” of “IL-2 Sturmovik : Great Battles”) to a single key (I can’t remember which one) and again the machine guns don’t fire!

A BIG MYSTERY!!

Any ideas on this?

What aircraft are you in?

Could it be you first need to start the engine before you can fire the guns?

(I really don't know for sure, but I can imagine some a/c types may need to have engines running, all systems activated and powered up to get the guns to fire?)

I tried the I-16 and LaGG-3 but both were working with the key depressions (combination of keys/single key) but not when I went to the joystick/throttle buttons/switches and the back to the actual keys.

Not interested in my suggestion? See here:

Don't want to criticize, but if you report an issue and need help, it's better to post it once and not in two different topics. Just a hint.

Cheers

Thanks, Therion.

I will be trying what you suggested - I've just done a fresh download and install of "IL-2 Sturmovik : Great Battles" because the joystick attempts again screwed up the machine command in "IL-2 ….. " - the machine gun button (on the screen/in the sim) depresses (one can see that!) but no firing - on the other hand, the cannon fires 100%?!

Will report back tomorrow - don't want to rush things at this late hour.

Btw, when you said that you didn't use the X-55 profile software, does that mean that you simply plug the joystick and driver into the USB ports (without installing the Mad Katz software AND drivers?) and allow Windows to identify these and install software/drivers for them? If so, presumably one can't have the 3 modes on the throttle?

Btw, I inadvertently posted my query twice - I clicked "submit" when I was closing my various Windows down, not realising that the first "submit" had gone through … and I couldn't delete the second post (there's obviously a way to do it, but I couldn't find it).

Regards

Yep, that's true, you will only have one mode - that's the drawback. But honestly, you actually don't necessarily need more than one mode for IL2-GB.

Dear Therion

i am most embarrassed to tell you that:

- the LaGG-3 machine gun only works when the aircraft’s engine is running - the cannon does not require that (that fixed me!); and

- I’d forgotten that I’d taken the aircraft off complex engine management (in the Custom mode) and hence the fuel mixture and RPM levers would not respond to key depressions!!

i feel such a bloody fool! Sorry about all that!
