Dear friends,

The year 2020 is here in full force. Let's hope that the new decade will bring good changes to our world. We in the IL-2 Sturmovik team are beginning the work on the new project, Battle of Normandy.

.........................................

It will also add the new tank for Tank Crew -  Pz.Kpfw.V Ausf.D "Panther" - and additional airfields and visually improved banks of the countless rivers and canals on the Rheinland map.

.........................................

Full news - here is a full text and visual materials

@BlackSix can you let us know the list of additional airfields so that we can start preparing to modify our multiplayer missions please? Great news!

Basically this is a method to calculate indirect lighting into the materials and if implemented, will make the cockpits look way more realistic as the materials will appear more natural. It will be a great step for the sim and I am looking forward to it.

And it can yield performance increases as well and it will allow the devs to place more light sources without any big impact in frames.

It separates calculation of geometry from lightning and helps processing many textures at once instead of doing each thing at a time, meaning you can do more complex lightning of a scene with less effort. It is less of a help with transparencies where you need to have the image behind it. And it requires hardware that support shader molel 3.0.

S! Great news.

Could you please consider looking at:

An Arras summer map with no soggy ground.

The soggy ground prevents mission builders from adding airfields on level ground. It also prevents missions that require planes to land in open country behind enemy lines. An Arras summer map with no soggy ground gives mission designers the option to use it or not.

wheelscamel.jpg

Airfields missing from the Arras map:

Bailleul  0105.3
Lomme Lille 0207.1
La Gorgue 0305.8
Hesdigneul 0404.5
Faucaucourt en Santerre  1206.4

Warfusee       1204.9

Airfield under attack feature: This may work for WW II and arcade style missions but does not work for WW I  Expert missions.  The graphic destroys the fog of war and because the airfields are closer it does not give useful information.  The diameter or range of this feature needs to be added to the airfield properties box so it can be used, not used or adjusted by the mission creator.

attack feature.jpg

Balloons: Adjust properties so that Balloons can flare.

Influence area:   Should show on in game UI map as a colored area as in RoF. Would be nice to see nationality symbol as well.

Color Coalition objects in ME for Entente and Central  just like Allied and Axis objects are.  Blue for Entente and Red for Central.

Thank you all !

Fantastic, the new Tank as well as improvements for Rhineland map.

And of course Deferred Shading tech, whenever it gets in, is quite some icing on the cake !

... curious when we will see this version 4.004 🙂

Hi guys. Happy new year and looking forward to il2 in 2020.  Could you perhaps in a future diary give an indication of the envisaged aircraft release sequence for BON. No timeframes required and of course everything is subject to change. Just a bit curious of where spit...mossie and mustang/thunderbolt will be in the pecking order. Many thanks and good developing.

What does this mean for VR?

Those are all old threads. The initial issues with "deferred shading" in DCS were fixed and VR performance is now actually quite good. I would expect the same VR improvements in IL-2.

Il2 runs 10 times better in VR in my PC than DCS does.

Also looks better.

It means that I would expect this feature being, at least for some time being, optional. As mentioned, deferred shading is much, much better at *certain* things (depending on your hardware) than what we have so far. You require modern hardware AND you should ideally give a scenario that profits most from that computing strategy. As I understand it this would be may things of a similar material to be drawn with lots of light sources. This gives different priorities of what you can do best when making a map.

We do not know where or in what way the current engine reaches its limits with the current mode of doing things. Deferred shading can give additional headroom, but I would expect it to come at a price.

DCS runs 1.25 times better in VR in my PC than IL2 does.

Also looks (slightly) better.

p.s. - that is not to say DCS is a better game. Il-2 is an actual complete game and more fun, still have trouble figuring out what DCS actually is...

Looking forward to those map improvements, thank you very much for the update, really appreciated, hope you guys had a great holiday.:drinks:

The Panther looks superb, probably one of the best looking tanks of the period, if you can actually call such a huge lump of metal beautiful then it takes the trophy, glad I was never on the receiving end of its armament, pity the poor guys that were.;)

Wishing you all the very best, Pete.

An overpriced "pay to play alpha-ish beta" .... It does make pretty screenshots and videos though 🤣

I believe that the dev team can push the deferred shading with a good performance boost at the same time. Different teams make wonders as we can see :)

I doubt that it will add performance. That was not the case for DCS. Same for other new tech miraculous technology in the past (eg dx12,...). Small eye candy things that worse the fps. I do not remember a single technical evolution that give a real fps boost, except hardware or multi core programming.

Integrating this kind of thing on an already existing engine often give few fps gains.

But it will lake things more complex for 3dmigoto mod...

Vulkan API sure does on my PC !

No Man's Sky Vulkan vs DX did make a positive difference in FPS.

Hopefully if DCS implements Vulkan too (may take a while as does eveything DCS) it will do the same there (?).

But "deferred shading" will be great as well for IL-2, no doubt ! (although it did seem to create some minor problems at first in DCS 2.5).

Will it make 3dmigoto mod impossible? We rely on the zoom. Without your mod, we could not ID aircrafts... (ingame zoom goes cross-eyed with canted displays).

Watch some Panther porn in between. Last year (2019) at Overloon, NL. Everyone should visit that museum. "War belongs to the museum."

I forgot to mention, in general I think the move to deferred rendering and continuous improvement in graphics and graphical fidelity is fantastic. The developers are dedicated to their product, and they keep modifying and renewing their engine.

This product line will have a long future.

This is evident. If I had not gotten Battle of Normandy yet, I would buy it now.
