PE-2 Gunner ammunition levels

Recommended Posts

S!

Yesterday I had the privilege of taking part in a glorious scrap over the ruins of Stalingrad as a traitor to the encircled 6th Army. I say this because usually I would be strapped into a 109 on the hunt for Russian birds however this time I decided to try my hand as a top turret gunner in a PE-2 flown by "Cyclone".

During the flight to the German airbase we were intercepted by three 109's and needless to say the action that ensued was breathtaking and desperate. We were taking hits but still flying intact and I was attempting to conserve ammunition by only taking small pot shots at the attackers. I managed to do away with one 109 and get hits on another before my ammunition was exhausted and it really seemed to run out very quickly.

Shortly after our fuel tank must have taken a direct hit because we just suddenly blew up. A quick and honourable death, fighting to my last breath....or should I say, last bullet.

My question is, does a possibility exist for an option to carry more ammunition as a gunner? It really did not seem like enough to stage an adequate defence. I understand that the plane is designed to carry a lot of bombs and so efforts must be made to not stack on too much weight, but surely it could hold a few extra rounds for the machine guns?

On another note, this sim is just getting better the more I play it, the perspective from the gunner's position as the 109's came in was awesome and looked like real footage as they fired and then zoomed up and away. Also I love the mid-air explosion effects when you hit your enemy in the fuel tank and the fact that you can be hit by the debri from the kill....real Erich Hartmann style ;)

The progress on this sim has been very professional.

The Pe-2 wasn't designed for prolonged gunfights with enemy interceptors, hence the low-ish ammo load. That, and the small space for the two gunners meant that the amount of ammo that could be carried was limited.

It may become an option for you to carry more ammo in the future since we already having options like additional armors.

One suggestion though, I too once believed that defensive gunner had too few ammo back a few years ago.

But then I realised that the defensive gunner was never meant for you to shoot down fighters as Call of Duty have portrayed.

To be a gunner, your primary job is to deny enemy fighters' chance to get a shoot at you.

You can shoot accurately at the enemy fighters and made them feel that they are in a wrong position to attack and must reposition themselves, that will be really good.

Yeah, so you don't have to shoot them down, leave that for the escort fighters. In the end of a game, if enemy fighters was so annoyed and they could not line up for a proper attack run because of you and your escorts, and your plane returned safely. Then you are a top Ace gunner.  ;)

Hope that helps.  :)

The Pe2 isn't a B17 with thousands of rounds of .50 cal to burn, if you have a fighter on your six then speed is your main defence.

Makes you think when to fire. Kind of a nerve game how long you can wait until firing.
