Airfield activity

Hello gents. Loving the game.

As we move into the Normandy battlespace I’d love to see a bit more atmosphere around the drome.

from my understanding and from pics I’ve seen the German aircraft were mostly starting up under heavy camouflage - often amongst trees along roadsides or under camouflaged barns.

Sometimes I’m in awe of watching all these aircraft start up around me but I reckon a bit more stuff would make it amazing.

Cheers

Atmosphere.

That word that I think its more important than everything. In music, in movies, in videogames, in everything.

And still, probably the most difficult thing to do right: atmosphere usually means more "extra" things that doesn't actually do anything for the game itself but make it look better and feel it better for the player.

Now, that means, more resources taken from the devs, more work for the game engine and more work for our CPUs.

So... I would leave the atmosphere like it is now, at least for a good amount of time.

More atmosphere could be added without too much work or impact

to performance. And it’s something this series lacks. I hope they spend some time on it but there isn’t much of a track record for doing so.

There is no CPU concern/problem.

It depends, but yes it can take some CPU ressource.

Not offline - and I build fairly complex air bases. Online might be another matter but it’s not an issue for single player.

Offline too, if you use moving objects. But you can add more objects than in multiplayer because you have to deal with only one player.

how so? How can 3D objects moving around with its own AI not affect CPU usage?

Or isn't any AI for them?

Atmosphere is the one thing lacking in career. It is important for SP and anyone not only interested in killrates and dogfights.
I am well aware that 90% of playerbase in WOL that take off directly from spawn point will be annoyed by have another thing to crash against

after all they do hit every second plane taking off in the runway.
Insight of what priorities the devs should take is only in the hands of the dev’s themselves.

I also really wish 1C would revamp the "bubble" in career mode and add random flights outside of it and even if they added just 5 trains moving thriugh the entire map randomly and a few truck cinvoys too.  This could be an option.

The "other sim"  easily generates civilian traffic.  Im talkint cars etc all.over the place.  Further even if thats impossible some stuff is just disappointing.

For example the BoS career.  If they just somehow made it that from 11/23 to say 1/15 theyd have a flight of Ju52s or He111s flying to Pitomnik or Gumrak.  If you run into them so be it. Maybe its your mission maybe you just spot them.  Its weird ti me not having the air bridge battles..

It would add sooo much to the game if you could be bounced anywherw too not just in the bubble near target WP..

My .02

There would be major step forward having more atmosphere if the missions would start in 3D mission breiffing room with mission map on the board. After briefing the pilots would have to run / walk on their respective planes on board it. This applies on both SP and MP missions.

Yes.  In fact whatever happened with this concept?

This was the direction all sims were going in late 90s early 2ks.  Making it seem like you were on an airfield.  This minimal aesthetic menu and flying may appeal to some - I liked B17 the Mighty 8ths atmosphere especially (for briefings etc) and EAWs menus etc..

Fully agree, this whole concept of quick kill satisfaction of air quake really needs to go away.  This games huge selling point for me was the campaigns, both dynamic and scripted.  Does anybody have an example mission of a more atmospheric come to life airfield or air drome?

I want populated airfields in the QMB. At least the one you can choose take off from and/or the one you attack. Get some life happening.

I admit I know nothing about programming, but would this really take more than 20 minutes?

Okay....this has opened up a Pandora’s box somewhat for me which got me to thinking...

1. I never (or have yet anyways) to play multiplayer online. Out of habit, I always have been playing “online” though when starting up the game.

2. Since I play on online mode but don’t use multiplayer would it actually benefit me to be playing offline instead based on the above information in this thread (CPU usage as Gambit stated)?

So in essence unless one decides to play multiplayer there is never a need to go “online” then? Geez this sounds so stupid though after playing for over two years now with this series but I think I’ve just automatically have played online instead of offline since RoF days and never have it really any thought based on CPU usage. I mean your stats and  career mode all stay the same anyways, correct? So no need to online mode if one plays strictly single player careers and quick combat then and save a little CPU usage as well from what I’m understanding.

Sorry OP, didn’t mean to hijack your thread and YES I totally agree with atmosphere and this goes for FC as well!

Agree 100%.  I remember way back in the day in European Air War after finishing an escort mission, dropping down to the deck and hunting trains or strafing an airfield.   It really added to  the sense of immersion.

You need to me online to play career mode, missions are generated by the server.

When people say online they are talking about multiplayer, not just being connected to the internet.

In general, what this sim needs is MORE STUFF. Not any new content, just the ability to put more of what we already have on the screen at the same time. It's incredibly sparce of there.

Next module suggestion. Battle of More Stuff. I'd toss them $80 for that!

Ah, okay! Thanks so much! Appreciate it! Okay, then I’ve been doing it right since I fly career quite a bit. Need online for that.

So when we are saying no significant CPU hits on offline with added immersion then I take it we are discussing single player missions and multiplayer missions and not career then since career needs to be online (unless single player missions need to be online too - have yet to play one).

”We now return you to your regularly scheduled program...”

I said there’s no impact/concern (within reason)  - not that the CPU isn’t being utilized at all. Also there are many static objects, including vehicles that can be utilized.

I’ve built a lot of single player missions by now.
